Europe's football governing body UEFA have announced that Spanish Primera Division side Real Mallorca will not be given permission to play in the Europa League in the 2010-11 season.

Mallorca finished fifth in the Spanish top flight last season and by rule were supposed to feature in the upcoming Europa League campaign. However, the Balearic club has been struggling financially and UEFA have now decided that the Islanders do not meet the criteria to play in the competition.

UEFA's Control and Disciplinary Body met in Nyon on Thursday to come to their decision. A statement on their website reads:

"On the basis of all expert reviews which have been undertaken, the Control and Disciplinary Body ruled that the club does not fulfil the necessary admission criteria (Article 2.07 of the Regulations of the UEFA Europa League), as the licence of the club was not granted in accordance with the UEFA Club Licensing Regulations, 2008 edition, and the club has not fulfilled its obligations as defined in these regulations."

It is expected that Mallorca will launch an appeal against this ruling. If Mallorca fail in their appeal, then fellow Spanish side Villarreal could take their place in the Europa League.

　　在考虑了所有专家意见的基础上，欧足联纪律委员会判定这支球队没有达到必要的参赛标准（《欧洲联赛赛事章程》第二章第七条），而根据2008年版本的《欧足联俱乐部参赛资格章程》，他们将不被允许参赛。而且根据这些章程的要求，这家球队没有完成自己必须的义务。

　　在这个决定下达后三天之内，马洛卡有机会上诉以抗议欧足联纪律委员会做出的这个判决。

Mallorca to appeal Euro ban

Real Mallorca have announced their intention to appeal Uefa's decision to exclude them from the Europa League.

The Islanders secured continental qualification last season when they finished fifth in the Primera Liga.

However, a Uefa ruling on Thursday stripped them of their place in the competition as it was decided that they did not fulfil the admission criteria.

Mallorca are currently in voluntary administration, having accrued debts totalling some ?85million (£71.4m).

The club took that decision in an effort to sort out their finances, and European qualification would have allowed them to bring in much-needed funds.

With that in mind, the club's lawyer has revealed that an appeal will be lodged once more is known about Uefa's decision to impose the ban.

Luis Huerta said in a statement released on the club's official website: "This decision is seriously harmful to the club's administration process as there were a series of revenues expected...that would have allowed payments to creditors."

Coach Michael Laudrup, who has only recently been installed at the helm, is confident a compromise can be reached which will allow Mallorca to line up in the Europa League this season.

"I am optimistic," said the Dane.

"It doesn't seem logical that this could happen. I don't think we'll stay out."
