Chelsea 1-1 PSG (Chelsea win 6-5 on penalties): Thibaut Courtois penalty seals win

Last Updated: 26/07/15 9:37am

Chelsea beat Paris Saint-Germain 6-5 on penalties in their International Champions Cup clash in North Carolina on Saturday night after the two sides played out a 1-1 draw in normal time.

PSG struck the first blow midway through the opening 45 minutes as Zlatan Ibrahimovic tapped home a rebound but Chelsea hit back after the break thanks to a Victor Moses strike.

However, there is no doubt that it was the Ligue 1 champions who looked the more polished of the two sides, with PSG only losing their way after making a raft of substitutions in the second half.

Before that, though, they played some impressive football, with Brazil playmaker Lucas Moura the standout performer in Charlotte, particularly in an eye-catching first-half display that saw his team lead at the break.

Chelsea holding midfielder John Obi Mikel was badly at fault for PSG’s opener after 25 minutes after the experienced Nigeria international got caught in possession on the edge of the area, with striker Jean-Kevin Augustin stealing the ball before hitting the post with a low shot.

Unfortunately for Mikel, the rebound fell straight at the feet of PSG captain Zlatan Ibrahimovic, with the forward making no mistake with an accurate finish high into the net from six yards out past a helpless Asmir Bergovic in the Chelsea goal.

Thereafter it was PSG who dictated the tempo of the game in front of a large crowd at Bank of America Stadium.

New Chelsea ‘keeper Begovic was called upon on several occasions to keep the scoreline at 1-0 as the Bosnian – recently signed from Stoke City – denied the likes of both Augustin and Lucas before the interval.

For much of the second period the pattern of play continued in one direction, towards the Chelsea goal, which was this time occupied by first-choice goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, but without PSG ever testing the big Belgian to the same extent as they had Begovic before the break.

Then, seemingly out of nowhere, the Premier League champions equalised through the one piece of play befitting their status

A swift counterattack and a delicious lofted ball to the back post by Cesc Fabregas picked out the unmarked Victor Moses, who made no mistake with a controlled finish from close range after 65 minutes.

However, despite there still being a quarter of the contest to play, the match petered out amid a raft of changes - including Radamel Falcao's introductio for his Chelsea debut - as both coaches took the chance to cast their eyes over new players, resulting in the game going to penalties.

Both sides missed one spot kick before sudden death was needed – Juan Cuadrado first for Chelsea, followed immediately by Jean-Christophe Bahebeck for PSG.

Thiago Silva’s weak effort was then easily saved by Courtois, giving the Chelsea ‘keeper the opportunity to fire powerfully into the net and hand his side the win.

Barcelona 1-3 Man Utd: United maintain 100 per cent pre-season record

Last Updated: 26/07/15 8:35am

Manchester United maintained their 100 per cent winning start to pre-season with a morale-boosting 3-1 victory over Barcelona in the International Champions Cup in California.

Wayne Rooney’s eighth-minute header saw United edge an evenly-matched first half at the Levi’s Stadium – home to NFL’s San Francisco 49ers – before substitute Jesse Lingard doubled the Premier League side’s lead shortly after the hour mark.

Rafinha’s exquisite volley on the cusp of full time appeared to have set up a grandstand finish in Santa Clara, but Adnan Januzaj punished Marc Bartra’s hesitancy when dealing with a long ball moments after to seal United’s third consecutive pre-season victory.

United will now travel to Chicago where they take on Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain in the final match of their tour of the United States.

Luis Suarez endured a frustrating afternoon in the California heat. The former Liverpool striker hit the woodwork twice and was subjected to some rough treatment by Phil Jones.

David de Gea made his first appearance of the tour after overcoming a back injury, but there was no sign of Angel Di Maria, who failed to join up with United's squad for the pre-season tour.

Jones assured Suarez was made to feel unwelcome early on, clattering into the forward from behind.

A minute later the Uruguayan beat De Gea with a curling free-kick, but luckily for the Real Madrid target the ball struck a post and bounced to safety.

De Gea was at full stretch moments later to deny Sergi Roberto, who had been played in by Rafinha. But, with Barcelona dominating possession, it was Van Gaal's men who struck first.

Young floated a corner into the box and Rooney managed to out-muscle his marker Adriano before powering a header past Marc Andre ter Stegen.

United were playing a dangerous game, trying to pass out from the back while Suarez, Pedro and Rafinha lurked on the edge of the box. However, they looked more impressive going forward as the first half progressed.

Rooney rounded the keeper but could not finish before Ter Stegen tipped Young's fierce drive over the bar.

Suarez ended the half on a frustrating note, hitting the woodwork once again from inside the box.

In the second half, Memphis Depay showed his strength, turning his marker and firing a low shot at Ter Stegen as United looked for a second.

Van Gaal made 11 changes just after the hour and, less than three minutes later, United doubled their lead.

Tyler Blackett played a one-two with James Wilson before crossing to the back post where Lingard drove home from 10 yards.

United looked to be coasting to victory, but Rafinha hammered a superb volley past substitute goalkeeper Sam Johnstone in the dying minutes.

But Januzaj restored United’s two-goal lead shortly after, putting the result beyond any doubt when he held off his marker before driving home from inside the box.

Inter Milan 0-3 Real Madrid: James Rodriguez free-kick eases Inter to victory

Last Updated: 27/07/15 4:17pm

Real Madrid continued their fine pre-season form with a straightforward 3-0 victory over Inter Milan in the International Champions Cup in China.

In sweltering conditions in Guangzhou, Real created the better chances in the first half and took a deserved lead when Jese Rodriguez struck on the half-hour mark.

Inter failed to build on their strong end to the first half as Real – freshened up by four half-time changes – doubled their lead on 56 minutes through substitute Raphael Varane.

James Rodriguez was brought on for his first pre-season appearance with 10 minutes to play and sealed Real's victory in emphatic style with a stunning 35-yard free-kick a minute from time.

Inter’s turgid pre-season form continues, with the Nerazzurri extending their wait for a first pre-season goal by firing another blank in the Tianhe Stadium.

The game, however, had started in much better fashion to which it had ended for the Serie A side as both sides flew out of the blocks in a lively start to proceedings.

Having made 11 changes to the side which lost 1-0 to AC Milan on Saturday, Inter had a glorious opportunity to open the scoring with just two minutes on the clock, but Mauro Icardi failed to head Hernanes’ cross home from close range.

Gareth Bale then had two chances in quick succession, the first of which were saved by Samir Handanvoic before he dragged a second effort wide of the target in an end-to-end opening five minutes.

Real were then denied of numerous occasions by an inspired display from the Inter ‘keeper. Having denied Bale early on, the Slovenia international thwarted Cristiano Ronaldo twice, getting a finger to a low effort on 15 minutes before tipping a long-range free kick over the bar shortly after.

He was called into action on 20 minutes when he produced a fine double save, parrying Isco’s volley from the edge of the area out before stopping Jese from converting the rebound.

However, his resistance was soon breached as Jese gathered Marcelo’s cross with one touch, cut inside Jeison Murillo with the other and then produced a smart finish to beat Handanovic at his near post on 29 minutes.

Inter ended the half the stronger of the two sides but Mateo Kovacic’s mazy run and shot and Hernanes’ quick free kick failed to catch Kaylor Navas off guard as he ensured Real’s lead at the break with two decent saves.

Rafa Benitez rang the changes at the break, with Varane, Denis Cheryshev, Kiko Casilla, and Nacho replacing Bale, Ronaldo, Navas and Sergio Ramos.

Freshened by the changes Real soon doubled their lead. Varane remained up field after a corner and showed great attacking prowess to nick in front of Inter captain Andrea Ranocchia at the near post before steering Isco’s cross into the back of the net.

As full time approached substitutions from both managers altered the fast-flowing nature of the game, until James produced a moment of sheer brilliance.

Having seen a free-kick well saved by Handanovic moments before, the Colombia international left the Inter stopper helpless as he wrapped an inch-perfect effort around the wall and into the top left-hand corner to seal the victory.

Match report: Chelsea 2 Barcelona 2 (4-2 on pens)

A perfect quartet of shoot-out penalties brought our 2015 tour of North America to a winning close in Washington DC.

The Blues were unerring from the spot while Barcelona struck woodwork with one and were kept out by Thibaut Courtois from another, as our keeper followed up his two penalty saves on Saturday night. This was only the third shoot-out of his professional career.

Jose Mourinho billed the game itself, which was played in front of nearly 80,000 fans in the United States capital, as a step-up in training for the season ahead, and it was a step-up in Chelsea performance level too.

Eden Hazard added another eye-catching goal to his increasingly impressive collection. That came early and with the Blues playing some of our best football of the fortnight, the lead was maintained until half-time.

Barcelona were back level through Luis Suarez 12 minutes after the restart and then took the lead with a shot from Sandro Ramirez good enough to beat Courtois, who had already made a string of stops.

However the Blues pulled the game level close to the end thanks to a well-timed spring and header from Gary Cahill who took a smack in the face in the process. It was Chelsea who packed the right punches when our third game in this International Champions Cup tournament was decided from the penalty spot.

It was a largely familiar starting line-up selected by Mourinho. Kurt Zouma partnered Cahill in central defence with recently appointed vice-captain Branislav Ivanovic assumed the armband.

While Cesar Azpilicueta continued as the one ever-present in this pre-season programme of matches, with Hazard ahead of him, there was a new face on the opposite flank. Kenedy was in the team having trained with the squad during this tour. Fluminese gave permission for the 19-year-old attacker to take part in this game.

Showing good pace, he was bundled to the floor in the opening minutes to give Fabregas the chance to send a free-kick into his former club’s penalty area. Zouma towered to meet it and it needed a good save from Marc-Andre ter Stegen to prevent us taking a rapid lead.

Kenedy soon made his presence felt at the other end of the big and full arena by getting ahead of Luis Suarez to shepherd the ball back to Thibaut Courtois.

Matic headed a free-kick over before Diego Costa pulled a hole in the Barcelona defence which lead to an Oscar shot which was saved.

Chelsea, sporting the new adidas away kit for the first time, soon made the early domination pay through Hazard’s brilliance. Riding a challenge from Ivan Rakitic in trademark style, he then changed direction and went for goal, evading two other defenders before slotting the ball home low and true before a saving tackle could be made. This is what the American fans had come to see. There were just nine minutes played.

Courtois saved from Rakitic and then punched away the Croatian’s corner as Barcelona responded with their best period of the game.

Midway through the half, Diego Costa was fouled 20 yards from goal as he accepted a Hazard pass. Fabregas ran over the ball and left it for Oscar who watched his sweetly struck shot rebound off the crossbar with the keeper well beaten. Diego Costa got to the rebound but couldn’t battle through for a shot.

Matic was commanding the central area in this opening half, but he left the space clear for Hazard to give the Catalans the runaround on 28 minutes until he was hacked down. Treatment was required but no card shown.

Barcelona were next to test the opposition keeper however and Courtois needed to be sharp to keep out Suarez. He had to save again soon after from Sandro Ramirez.

On 33 minutes, all of the sizeable percentage of the crowd who were supporting Chelsea were ready to celebrate a Diego Costa goal. Fabregas spotted the simple pass to send his Spain team-mate away but having steadied himself, the striker shot wide.

Courtois saved from Suarez again in what was developing into a bit of personal duel and although Chelsea were playing well, it was inevitable Barca would create chances. Gary Cahill importantly threw himself in the path of Rakitic and the midfielder blasted over from five yards out.

Jeremy Mathieu was the latest to foul Hazard just before half-time and the referee had seen the Belgian take enough punishment. This time he waved his yellow card at the centre-back.

There were only two changes for the second period as Brazilians switched. Willian and Ramires came on for Kenedy and Oscar, with Fabregas moving more forward.

Diego Costa shot over in the opening seconds after approach play that had the crowd gasping. Munir El Haddadi then headed against the foot of the Chelsea post but only he had fouled.

The equaliser did come after 51 minutes, Suarez succeeding in scooping the ball over Courtois from inside the area and watching as Zouma failed in a valiant effort to clear the ball off the line.

Both sides made a collection of changes on the hour, with Zouma moving to left-back as Azpilicueta was given some well-earned rest. Diego Costa’s withdrawal at that point was preceded by him needing to sit down on the turf but he was able to walk down the tunnel.

It was one of the two Barcelona players who had remained on from the start who put the Spaniards ahead. Sandro Ramirez, one of their front three, stepped outside of Moses on the left of the area and clipped a shot beyond Courtois and into the far side of the net. It was a quality strike.

Falcao was introduced not long after, with recent substitute Loic Remy dropping back behind the Colombian. Jordi Alba was booked for going through the back of Moses.

There was hope of a Chelsea leveller as the final 10 minutes approached but Ramires fired wide from Moses’s square pass. The Nigerian winger then sent another ball across the face of goal but to no avail. He was causing problems but Willian couldn’t reach another low cross after good work from Moses down the right. His time to make a difference was approaching.

There were just over five minutes left on the clock when Cahill bravely nodded the Blues level. Willian had floated a testing free-kick into a crowd box and Barca dealt with it poorly. Our England international defender was first to the dropping ball thanks to a prodigious leap. He headed it in at the expense of a blooded nose from the keeper’s fist and the end to his participation.

Willian or Remy might have headed in a late winner from a Moses cross but rather got in each other’s way, and Rafinha could have grabbed it at the death for the Spaniards but half-volleyed wide.

Instead Chelsea faced a second shoot-out decider in four days.

Andres Inesta was first up and scored. Falcao, as he did against PSG, took Chelsea’s first and sent it high to the keeper’s left. Alan Halilovic went for the chip but hit the bar so when Moses netted calmly, Chelsea were 2-1 ahead.

Gerard Pique shimmied twice but there was no fooling Courtois who saved on the turf. Ramires found the bottom corner to make it 3-1 to the Blues.

Sandro Ramirez kept Barcelona in it but the stay of execution was short. Remy kept up the 100 per cent success rate and victory was ours.

On an extremely hot and humid night, Washington DC had been served up with some great entertainment.
