Arsenal 0-0 Hull City: Eldin Jakupovic frustrates Gunners

By Patrick Surlis
Last Updated: 20/02/16 3:36pm

Eldin Jakupovic made a series of fine saves as Hull City earned an FA Cup fifth-round replay after a goalless draw with holders Arsenal at the Emirates.

In Arsene Wenger's 100th FA Cup match, the closest the Gunners came to a breakthrough was when the Hull goalkeeper tipped Joel Campbell's second-half free-kick onto the post.

Jakupovic also kept out Danny Welbeck's deflected strike with a smart stop, while Alex Iwobi, Theo Walcott and substitute Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain all had opportunities too.

Referee Mike Dean waved away two Arsenal penalty appeals in the first half, and Championship leaders Hull withstood heavy pressure in the final stages as Jakupovic punched away Alexis Sanchez's free-kick.

Jakupovic made 11 saves in total, the most by an opposition keeper against the Gunners in any game this season, to ensure a replay is required at the KC Stadium.

With a Champions League test against Barcelona on the horizon, Wenger made nine changes from last weekend's 2-1 Premier League victory over Leicester, including a first start of the season for last weekend's match-winner Welbeck.

Arsenal and Hull are familiar foes having drawn each other in three consecutive FA Cup seasons, including the 2014 final, and a heavily-rotated Tigers side - Steve Bruce making 10 changes of his own - found themselves on the back foot early on.

Mohamed Elneny had a penalty appeal turned down after his half-volley struck Alex Bruce on the arm, while Welbeck headed Walcott's cross straight at Jakupovic.

The Gunners kept the pressure on, with Welbeck, Walcott and Iwobi squandering presentable opportunities, and Steve Bruce's men struggled to escape their own half in the opening 30 minutes.

A rare foray into Arsenal territory ended with a booking for Harry Maguire for simulation, before Arsenal had another penalty shout ignored after Welbeck was crowded out in the box.

Laurent Koscielny went into the book for a cynical challenge on Adama Diomande as the Championship leaders improved before the break.

But Wenger's half-time words had a galvanising effect, and only a fine stop from Jakupovic denied Walcott after Kieran Gibbs picked out the forward. Iwobi was the next to go close, but the teenager steered his low shot wide.

Jukupovic was called into action again eight minutes into the second half, superbly diverting Campbell's free-kick onto the post with a finger-tip save.

Wenger introduced Sanchez and Olivier Giroud as Arsenal turned up the heat, but an inspired Jakupovic continued to frustrate the Premier League side. The Hull 'keeper reacted well to keep out Welbeck's deflected effort and Giroud drew a routine save from the edge of the box.

Hull counter-attacks were few and far between, but David Meyler wasted a good chance to pick out a team-mate when well placed in the Arsenal box.

Oxlade-Chamberlain was brought on for the final stages, but dragged his volley wide after Giroud's knock-down, while Hull substitute Sone Aluko forced David Ospina into a low stop.

With Barcelona, Manchester United and Tottenham to come in the next three weeks, a crowded fixture list becomes a little busier for Arsenal, while Hull's promotion push resumes at Ipswich Town on Tuesday night.

Watford 1-0 Leeds: Scott Wootton own goal settles FA Cup tie

By Oliver Yew at Vicarage Road
Last Updated: 20/02/16 5:18pm

Watford booked their place in the last eight of the FA Cup after Scott Wootton's own goal handed them a 1-0 victory over Leeds at Vicarage Road.

It took Quique Sanchez Flores' side until the 54th minute to break down their Championship opponents on Saturday, when Wootton turned Ben Watson's cross into his own net.

The hosts thought they had wrapped up the win when Etienne Capoue bundled the ball home at the far post, only to see referee Michael Oliver rule out the goal for a push from Troy Deeney.

Watford, who brought on Odion Ighalo with just under 25 minutes remaining, pushed for a second throughout the second half as they looked to make the game safe, but in the end it was not needed as the Premier League side reached the quarter-finals for the first time since 2007.

Flores' side, who made six changes from the side that beat Crystal Palace in the Premier League, looked to assert their dominance over Leeds early and they nearly took the lead in the first minute, but Deeney's header was deflected wide.

Leeds were slow out of the blocks but the hosts could not take advantage as Miguel Britos headed over not once but twice, as Watson's corners continued to cause problems for Steve Evans' side.

The hosts pushed forward in search of an opener as Jose Holebas's drilled effort was deflected wide, before Capoue, Mario Suarez and Almen Abdi all missed half chances.

In the 26th minute, Leeds finally made an attack of note as Mirco Antenucci turned into space on the halfway line before driving to the edge of the Watford area and picking out Stuart Dallas, whose shot lacked the power necessary to trouble Costel Pantilimon.

However, the move seemed to rouse Leeds and their excellent travelling support as Dallas dragged wide from the edge of the box on two occasions, either side of Marco Silvestri keeping out Juan Carlos Paredes' low cross for the hosts.

After the break, Watford came flying out the traps as Deeney saw two shots blocked in quick succession, before Holebas' shot was somehow kept out at the far post by more excellent defending.

The home side finally made the breakthrough 10 minutes after the restart when Wootton could not get out of the way of Watson's cross at the far post and the ball rebounded off the defender and into the back of the net.

Minutes later, Abdi fired over the bar before Capoue's goal was ruled out for Deeney's push on Charlie Taylor in the six-yard box, as the hosts looked to give themselves breathing space.

Nothing much was coming back from Leeds as Evans drew a frustrated figure on the touchline and it was Watford who continued to push for a second, but Capoue could only fire over the bar in the final few minutes after excellent link-up play with Deeney.

Leeds, with their only real attack of the second half, had a final chance of an equaliser in the 89th minute, but Souleymane Doukara saw his shot sail over the crossbar as Watford reached the last eight.

Reading 3-1 West Brom: Royals come from behind to reach FA Cup quarters

By Sam Drury at The Madejski Stadium
Last Updated: 20/02/16 5:18pm

Reading came from a goal down to knock Premier League West Brom out of the FA Cup and reach the quarter-finals.

After a drab first half, the visitors took the lead through Darren Fletcher in the 54th minute. However, the Royals hit back through captain Paul McShane's header.

Michael Hector then headed them in front with 18 minutes to play before substitute Lucas Piazon wrapped up the win with a tidy finish in stoppage time to send last season's semi-finalists through to the last eight as the Berkshire club continued their love affair with the competition.

The game ended on a sour note though as West Brom's Chris Brunt appeared to be struck by a coin thrown by one of his own supporters after the final whistle.

Neither side was able to retain possession in the opening stages on a well-worn pitch. Even when the game did settle chances were scarce in the first half.

Chris Brunt curled a 30-yard free-kick over the bar for the visitors' well effort before the break.

At the other end, the left-back was being worked hard by the lively Hal Robson-Kanu. The Wales international jinking his way past three before putting in a dangerous cross midway through the half.

From the resulting corner, the ball was eventually set for Paul McShane on the edge of the box but his powerful effort whistled just past the post.

Ben Foster in the West Brom goal was called into action before the half was out though, springing well to tip the ball over the bar to keep out Robson-Kanu's looping header from Chris Gunter's cross.

James McClean provided Albion's biggest threat after switching to the right wing but lacked the final ball on a number of occasions having worked some space for himself.

It was a different story in the second half though as Fletcher's goal sparked the game into life nine minutes after the restart.

Salomon Rondon controlled the ball and span his marked before squaring the ball to Fletcher on the edge of the box. The former Manchester United midfielder took a touch before firing low into the far corner.

It was a rare moment of quality in a game that was often lacking in that department.

Reading were level minutes later though as Oliver Norwood swung in a free-kick from wide on the left. McShane got up above the Baggies defence and headed in despite Foster getting a hand to it.

With the score levels both sides pushed for a second and with 72 minutes on the clock, Reading got it.

Norwood delivered another inswinging delivery and this time Hector was on hand to nod the ball home at the far post.

That forced Albion to throw men forward and that left them open to the counter. It would eventually seal their fate but they had two glorious chances to equalise in the space of 30 seconds with six minutes remaining.

First, Fletcher's corner was flicked on to Saido Berahino inside the six yard box but he was unable to divert his header goalwards allowing Reading to clear. Then when the ball was sent back into the box, it fell kindly to Fletcher at the far post but the midfielder fluffed his lines, managing only to poke the ball straight at Ali Al Habsi from five yards out.

The Baggies continued to press forward, leaving their defence wide open with Robson-Kanu shooting wide when clean through but Piazon put the icing on the cake in added time. The midfielder firing in from 12 yards after being picked out by Ola John.

Bournemouth 0-2 Everton: Ross Barkley and Romelu Lukaku down Cherries

By Jack Wilkinson
Last Updated: 20/02/16 8:25pm

Goals from Ross Barkley and Romelu Lukaku sealed Everton's passage into the FA Cup quarter-finals with a 2-0 fifth-round win at Bournemouth.

Having controlled large spells of the first half at the Vitality Stadium on Saturday evening, the Toffees made the breakthrough on 55 minutes when Barkley's deflected effort looped over Adam Federici.

Lukaku then put the tie beyond Bournemouth, who saw a first-half Charlie Daniels penalty saved by Joel Robles, with a low effort 15 minutes from time.

And that was the way it finished as Everton, yet to concede in this season's FA Cup, put their name in the hat for the next round with another assured cup display.

Bournemouth made seven changes to the side which lost at home to Stoke last week, welcoming back captain Tommy Elphick for only his second start since September as the hosts looked to reach the FA Cup quarter-finals for only the first time since 1956.

Roberto Martinez signalled his intention of reaching the next round of the cup by naming an unchanged side, and it took a familiar Toffees side just four minutes to create their first opening, but Barkley was unable to test Federici.

Juan Iturbe mustered the hosts' first attempt 10 minutes later but, having shown great pace to get away from Bryan Oviedo, the on-loan Roma frontman screwed his effort wide.

Lukaku's blistering run then saw him escape the clutches of Elphick shortly before the half-hour mark, but the Belgian was denied by Federici.

Bournemouth were then gifted the opportunity to open the scoring when James McCarthy inexcusably handled the ball in the area on 37 minutes, but Robles was on hand to deny Daniels' well-struck effort, before the rebound was fired into the side-netting.

Everton took full advantage of their reprieve after the interval, wrestling the initiative before breaking the deadlock.

Barkley was invited to shoot on the edge of the Bournemouth area and his effort took a wicked deflection off former Everton man Dan Gosling, sending the ball agonisingly over Federici.

And it was almost two a couple of minutes later as Lukaku was slipped through on goal and found the back of the net, only for the offside flag came to the hosts' rescue.

Bournemouth then mounted a sustained push for an equaliser. First, Junior Stanislas saw a free-kick deflect inches wide of the target shortly after the hour before Gosling spurned a glorious chance on 72 minutes, heading straight at Robles from close range.

The Cherries' pursuit of an equaliser proved to be fruitless as substitute Matt Ritchie became the next player to waste a chance, blazing a left-footed effort over after Joshua King's great work down the left.

And the hosts paid the price for not taking their chances as Gareth Barry flicked Oviedo's corner into the path of Lukaku, who tapped home from close range 14 minutes from time to seal Everton's passage into the last eight.

Blackburn 1-5 West Ham: Hammers cruise into FA Cup quarter-finals

By Sam Drury
Last Updated: 21/02/16 4:37pm

West Ham came from a goal down to thrash Blackburn 5-1 at Ewood Park and reach their first FA Cup quarter-final for five years.

The Championship side took the lead in Sunday's fifth-round tie through Ben Marshall in the first half but were 2-1 down by the break as Victor Moses equalised before Dimitri Payet curled in a free-kick.

Rovers' task became that bit harder as Chris Taylor was sent off for a second bookable offence early in the second period and the Hammers made their man advantage count soon after, as Emmanuel Emenike tapped in to score on his full debut for the club.

Even the sending off of Cheikhou Kouyate for a professional foul did nothing to halt West Ham's momentum as Emenike scored again, and Payet added his second with a fine solo strike in stoppage-time.

After a slow start West Ham started to find their rhythm but they were given a shock in the 20th minute as Marshall fired Blackburn in front.

There looked to be little danger as a Blackburn corner was headed out to the right-back 25 yards out. However, in a flash, he brought the ball under control, cut inside Payet and fired the ball left-footed into the near corner past Darren Randolph.

The home fans' joy was short-lived, though, as Moses was allowed to pick up the ball in the centre circle and run unchallenged to the edge of the area before shooting past Jason Steele six minutes later.

Steele might have done better with a ball that sneaked under his hands but he could do little about West Ham's second. Taylor was shown a yellow card for pulling back Payet and the Frenchman added to his woes, curling his free-kick over the wall and into the top corner from 25 yards (36).

Slaven Bilic's side were in complete control for the remainder of the half but it was Blackburn who began the second period the stronger. However, moments after Craig Conway saw his goal bound effort blocked inside the six-yard box, Rovers were down to ten men.

Taylor clipped Moses as the winger looked to break and referee Jonathan Moss had little choice but to produce a second yellow and then the red card.

That allowed West Ham to regain the upper hand and within nine minutes of Taylor's sending off, they had added their third.

After Steele denied Michail Antonio one-on-one, the ball eventually came to Kouyate with just the goalkeeper to beat. However, the midfielder unselfishly squared it for Emenike (64) to convert from six yards.

At that stage it seemed only a matter of how many for West Ham but the hosts were given a glimmer of hope with 15 minutes remaining as Kouyate tripped Elliott Bennett as he burst into the box.

The referee deemed that a goalscoring opportunity had been denied and showed Kouyate a straight red card.

Ultimately though, it had little impact on the game as West Ham ran in a further two goals in the last five minutes.

First, Payet clipped a ball over the top for Emenike to run onto, the striker keeping his composure, throwing in a step-over before rounding Steele to score his second (85).

Payet then added gloss (90+2), receiving the ball on the halfway line, before beating his man with his first touch, cutting inside and beating another, then burying his shot inside the near post.

It was a fitting finale as West Ham marched into the last eight.

Tottenham 0-1 Crystal Palace: Martin Kelly strikes as Palace reach FA Cup last eight

By Jack Wilkinson at White Hart Lane
Last Updated: 21/02/16 5:13pm

Crystal Palace booked their place in the FA Cup quarter-finals as Martin Kelly's first-half strike sealed a 1-0 fifth-round win at Tottenham on Sunday.

A pulsating cup tie at White Hart Lane was decided by the single goal as Palace full-back Kelly's fierce drive beat Michel Vorm at his near post in first-half stoppage-time.

Until that point, both sides had readily exchanged blows in an entertaining game which saw Dele Alli denied by both posts, and Emmanuel Adebayor return to his former employers.

Spurs, embarking on their fifth game in 19 days, tired towards the end, allowing Palace to see out a famous, and much-needed, cup win.

Mauricio Pochettino demonstrated the strength of the squad he is steadily assembling at Spurs as he made seven changes to the side which drew 1-1 with Fiorentina in the Europa League on Thursday.

Adebayor, five months after his acrimonious exit from White Hart Lane, led the Palace attack against his former club but it was Spurs who created the first opening as the unmarked Alli had a header cleared off the line by Yohan Cabaye on 3 minutes.

Spurs marshalled their former team-mate well inside the opening exchanges but it was a man within their own camp, Kyle Walker, who almost inflicted the first blow as the right-back headed a long ball over his 'keeper Vorm, which the Dutchman raced back to claw off the goalline.

And Vorm was on hand on 22 minutes to cut out Scott Dann's through ball after the Palace centre-back showed exceptional technique to gather a long ball.

Spurs should have had the lead moments later when Heung-Min Son's run resulted in the ball dropping to Alli, but his low shot struck both posts before Joel Ward hacked the ball to safety.

When Spurs captain Harry Kane had a long-range free-kick cut out by Wayne Hennessey, it appeared the game would reach the interval goalless.

However, a minute into added time, Wilfried Zaha's trickery lured in three Spurs defenders, opening up space for Kelly on the overlap. Zaha found him, and the right-back unerringly rattled the ball beyond Vorm at his near post.

After the break, Hennessey was alert to keep Kane low drive out on 51 minutes before Spurs had claims for a penalty dismissed by referee Craig Pawson, after Alli went to ground after a collision with Damien Delaney in the area.

Josh Onomah then spurned a glorious chance from close range, miscuing an effort five minutes later, before Alli whistle a long-range effort marginally wide of goal.

And, as the game grew on, and Spurs began to tire, Palace began to control the closing stages, with Connor Wickham, substitute Yannick Bolasie and Zaha hitting the host on the break.

Wickham thought he had wrapped up the tie as a contest three minutes from time, only for the offside flag to chalk off his effort.

But Spurs were unable to take full advantage of their reprieve as Palace's defensive unit stood firm in the face of a late Spurs revival which never came.

Chelsea 5-1 Manchester City: Impressive Blues move into last eight

By Patrick Surlis
Last Updated: 21/02/16 11:03pm

Chelsea booked their place in the FA Cup quarter-finals with a 5-1 victory over a young Manchester City side at Stamford Bridge on Sunday evening.

Diego Costa headed Chelsea in front before David Faupala, one of five full debutants for City, equalised from close-range, but two goals in five minutes after half-time put Guus Hiddink's side in control.

Willian slid home a third and Eden Hazard's free-kick made it four, and there was still time for Willy Caballero to save Oscar's penalty before substitute Bertrand Traore added a fifth.

But the Blues condemned the actions of a section of supporters after referee Andre Marriner removed a number of coins from the pitch close to the area where Faupala celebrated City's goal.

City have now lost three games in a row for the first time under Manuel Pellegrini, while Chelsea, who face Everton at Goodison Park in the quarter-finals, have scored five in back-to-back home matches.

With an eye on their Champions League tie against Dynamo Kiev next week, Pellegrini made nine changes from the Tottenham defeat, including full debuts for five academy prospects.

And against a strong Chelsea side unchanged from their loss in Paris, they began the brighter as Faupala forced Thibaut Courtois into an early save.

The fast start didn't last long, though, and Pedro soon hit the post after a neat interchange with Cesc Fabregas.

Hiddink's side continued to press and opened the scoring 10 minutes before half-time through Costa. Fabregas' lofted pass found Hazard in the box, and his hooked cross was turned home by the Chelsea striker for his seventh goal in seven games at Stamford Bridge.

City were only behind for 94 seconds as young French forward Faupala swiftly equalised from three yards. Signed as a free agent last summer after leaving Lens, he deflected Cesar Azpilicueta's clearance into the net after good work from Kelechi Iheanacho.

Shortly after the goal, and in the wake of Chris Brunt being struck by a coin on Saturday, Marriner removed a number of objects from the area of the pitch where City celebrated their goal, with a Chelsea spokesman subsequently condemning the incident.

Chelsea nearly went back in front just before the break, but Caballero palmed clear Pedro's volley after more impressive play from Fabregas.

The home side dominated the second half and took control just after the interval. Willian played a one-two with Hazard, taking the return pass and sweeping home to put Chelsea back ahead.

Gary Cahill smashed home number three after a poor clearance from Fernando five minutes later, the ball squirting underneath Caballero.

Willian then deferred to Hazard when the Belgian won a free-kick in a central position, and he made the most of poor positioning from the City goalkeeper to whip into the far corner.

The goal, added to two assists, capped an impressive performance from Hazard, whose involvement in three goals is as many as he had been in 24 previous appearances.

Costa was replaced by Traore to a standing ovation, and the substitute was immediately involved, winning a penalty after a challenge from Martin Demichelis. Oscar stepped up, but Caballero guessed correctly.

The respite was short-lived as Chelsea eventually grabbed a fifth through Traore, who scored for the second successive FA Cup match after his goal at MK Dons.

The striker had been denied by the post moments before, but found the net with an improvised header in the 89th minute.
