Gianluigi Donnarumma will have his Milan deal expire next month as negotiations for an extension failed.

End of an era at Milan; in more than one way. The Rossoneri qualified for the Champions League for the first time since 2013, but they will play the competition next year without Gigio Donnarumma, who has been the starting goalkeeper of Milan since 2015, since he was 16.

Donnarumma grew up at Milan and has been a fan of the club since he was a young kid. However, he has failed to come to an agreement with the management over the renewal of his contract and has decided to walk away as a free agent at the end of his current deal, which expires on June 30.

Paolo Maldini, Frederic Massara and Ivan Gazidis tried to convince Donnarumma to stay until the last minute – but on their terms. The goalkeeper, on the other side, made huge salary demands that the club did not want to satisfy and so comes the end of the relationship between Gigio and Milan.

As reported by Milannews.it today, after the 2-0 win over Atalanta which secured Milan the second place in Serie A, Donnarumma told his teammates of his decision to leave and to not renew his contract. Afterwards, Milan went all in for Mike Maignan who arrives from Lille for a total of ?13m + ?2m of bonuses and who has already signed a five-year contract with the red and black club.

As reported by Sky Italia, Milan’s latest offer for Donnarumma was a two-year contract worth ?7m plus ?1m bonuses net, with a ?20m release clause in case the Diavolo fail to qualify for the Champions League next season. The 22-year-old, however, through his super-agent Mino Raiola, asked for ?12m per season + a signing bonuses that would go directly to his pocket.

Gigio leaves Milan after 251 appearances in all competitions. Rumours suggest that he’s in talks with Barcelona and with Juventus. His brother Antonio, who earns ?1m per season, leaves too.

Milan director Paolo Maldini has confirmed that Gianluigi Donnarumma will leave the club this summer, at the end of his contract:
