Newcastle keeper Tim Krul faces five games out with ankle injury



Newcastle could be without goalkeeper Tim Krul for their next five games after he picked up an ankle injury.

The Netherlands international suffered ligament damage during training in the build-up to Saturday's match against West Ham, which Newcastle lost 1-0.

"Rob Elliot will be in goal for the next four or five games," Newcastle manager Alan Pardew said.

Pardew added he was "worried" about defender Daryl Janmaat who came off with an hamstring injury in the game.

Newcastle are already without forward Siem de Jong, midfielders Ryan Taylor, Rolando Aarons and Mehdi Abeid and defenders Fabricio Coloccini and Davide Santon.

"It's been blow after blow this year, but we've rode them and that's been the key to our success," added Pardew, whose side are eighth in the Premier League table with 19 points from 13 games.

"We've put younger players in and those in the group. We lose Tim but Rob's produced a super performance."

Newcastle suffer injury blow ahead of Arsenal clash as youngster set for first start

Newcastle will hand 21-year-old Jak Alnwick his first start for the club against Arsenal on Saturday evening.

The youngster came on for the injured Rob Elliot and impressed, doing his best to keep Diego Costa and his Chelsea team mates at bay and earning the man of the match award as the Toon took the Blues’ unbeaten record.

Elliot tore his thigh muscle towards the end of the first half against Jose Mourinho’s side and Alan Pardew fears his number two will be out until the new year.

First choice Tim Krul is also out, meaning Alnwick will be thrown into the deep end at the Emirates as two sides level on points meet.

Pardew is understandably concerned at having his first two choice goalkeepers injured.

“That’ll be him until January,” Pardew told the Shields Gazette. “Both No1 and No2 are out, and we’re now on No3.”

Defender and captain Fabricio Coloccini is also a doubt for the trip to north London, meaning depleted Newcastle could have a rookie looking defensive line.

Premier League reveal why Newcastle can’t sign an emergency goalkeeper on loan

NEWCASTLE United have been dealt a blow after the Premier League confirmed they are not eligible to bring in a goalkeeper on emergency loan.

Injuries to Tim Krul and Rob Elliot have left Alan Pardew facing a keeper crisis and the club had hoped to bring in an experienced stopper on a short-term loan deal.

But the Premier League have confirmed the club is not eligible because they have three fit goalkeepers on the books youngsters Jak Alnwick, Freddie Woodman and Karl Darlow.

Despite Darlow being out on a season long loan at Nottingham Forest, he still counts as a registered fit keeper and only clubs with one fit keeper can bring in an emergency loan.

A Premier League spokesman said: “Newcastle United are not eligible to sign a goalkeeper on emergency loan as they have three fit goalkeepers on the books, Jak Alnwick, Freddie Woodman and Karl Darlow.

“Only clubs with one fit goalkeeper are eligible.”

Darlow is currently out on loan at Nottingham Forest but the Premier League spokesman confirmed players out on domestic loan still count.

The crisis deepened after it was confirmed Number Two stopper Elliot’s thigh injury will keep him out until the New Year.

The goalkeeper suffered a thigh tear in Newcastle United’s 2-1 win over Premier League leaders Chelsea at St James’s Park on Saturday, to add to Krul who is also out injured.

On Saturday Pardew turned to 21-year-old Alnwick who came off the bench to make his debut.
