Harry Kane could be out for the season after suffering a bad ankle injury in Tottenham’s 6-0 FA Cup quarter-final win over Millwall. The England striker left White Hart Lane on crutches with a protective boot on his right ankle and looks set to miss England games against Germany and Lithuania later this month.Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino likened the injury to one Kane suffered in September — a ligament problem which put him out for seven weeks. Pochettino said: ‘It was a similar action in that he twisted his ankle, the same ankle. We hope it’s not a big issue, but it looks similar.’
Kane has been at the heart of Tottenham's bid for a Champions League qualifying spot and FA Cup glory. Eight goals in his last three domestic games had made Kane Mr Indispensable, so when he went down after a crunching tackle from Millwall defender Jake Cooper inside the opening five minutes, the whole of White Hart Lane held its breath.
And on Sunday night, Spurs fans' worst fears were realised with the news that Kane is facing a lengthy spell out with an ankle injury similar to the one that sidelined him for seven weeks earlier in the campaign.Kane is set to miss England's next two fixtures — a friendly against Germany and a World Cup qualifier against Lithuania, having left the ground on crutches and with his right ankle in a protective boot. Spurs doctors will assess the injury on Monday and the player will be sent for a scan once the swelling has gone down.
Son Heung-min moved up front when Kane went off in the 10th minute and scored a hat-trick, while Vincent Janssen, who has struggled since his £17million move from AZ Alkmaar last summer, came off the bench to add another, his first Spurs goal in open play.
Pochettino is hopeful Spurs can fill the void that will be left by Kane, who has 24 goals in 29 games this season.
'When you lose a player like Harry Kane, you know you'll miss him,' Pochettino said.
'But it's important for the players who play in his position, Son or Vincent today, to find the net and score goals.
'Players like Vincent and Son, who haven't played in the last few weeks in the starting XI, may now be important for us. But let's be positive and try and help Kane. Let's try to assess and see what happens in the next few days.'
Millwall are set to face a Football Association charge after their supporters directed racist chanting at Tottenham forward Son.
