Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has confirmed that Steven Gerrard will be handed a contract extension at Anfield this summer.

The Liverpool skipper, who turns 34 later this month, has 12-months left on his current deal but the Anfield outfit are set to extend that by another season.

Gerrard has had an outstanding campaign for Rodgers and Liverpool, operating in a more defensive role.

And Rodgers is under no illusions that Gerrard deserves to have a new deal.

"Steven will be one we look to get a contract to in the summer," Rodgers told the Liverpool Echo.

"With a year to go, it's something we will address.

"I believe Steven will play beyond 2015. He is a player who has really shown his qualities this season.

"Come the summer, he will still only be 34. Looking towards the future, I still think he's going to be a key part of our squad.

"He has dropped into a new position and played it seamlessly. His intelligence in the game is second to none. He is improving all the time.

"It's one where he has been brilliant for me as a captain and as a player this season and I would like that to continue.

"Most clubs, especially bigger clubs, recognise now that once a player gets over a certain age you have to look at a contract's duration.

"But for me Steven still has so much to offer and I really want him beside me here working on the field."

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is expecting a new contract to be 'sorted' for captain Steven Gerrard.

The midfielder’s current deal expires in 12 months’ time and the 34-year-old will reportedly agree an extension to play on at Anfield until at least 2016.

Rodgers is confident that Gerrard can continue beyond the coming campaign, especially following his decision to retire from England duty earlier this week.

“I am very happy that Steven is now going to commit to Liverpool and I am sure that (his contract) is something that we will look at,” Rodgers said.

“He is in really good condition and I’m sure it is something that will happen at some point.

“Listen, for his own mind, I’m sure he will want it sorted out, absolutely. You never want to leave players with not too long to go on their contract.

“A lot has gone on at the club over the course of the summer. It is something I am sure will get sorted.

“I know he can continue to play beyond this season. I have always said that. Now he doesn’t have international football, he will have that freshness.”

Transfer news: Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard hoping to discuss new contract



Steven Gerrard is yet to discuss a contract extension at Liverpool, but hopes talks will be held in the near future.

The inspirational Anfield skipper has entered the final year of his current deal.

Having spent his entire career with his home-town club,

and with unfinished business to attend to in the Premier League title race, Gerrard is determined to ensure that the 2014/15 campaign is not his last on Merseyside.

Brendan Rodgers has admitted that fresh terms will be tabled, with Gerrard still an important part of his plans.

The 34-year-old has announced his retirement from international football in an effort to prolong his domestic career

and has made it clear that he is prepared to enter into discussions with Liverpool whenever they are ready.

Gerrard said: “Brendan has mentioned a new deal a couple of times in the media, but no talks have happened.

“I am not trying to call the club out or anything like that. It’s not like that. I’m sure we will talk in the future but we will have to wait and see.

“I hope that I’m here for more than one year, of course I do, but it is all about this season for me.

“I still believe we can be involved in the title race. I believe if we had Luis Suarez, we’d be favourites.

We played some incredible stuff last season and we are a very, very good side – don’t forget that.”


While Gerrard remains focused on the present, he has conceded that

he could follow the lead of former England colleague Frank Lampard by ending his playing days outside the Premier League.

Lampard has taken the decision to link up with New York City at the end of his Chelsea contract, becoming the latest high-profile player to agree a switch to the MLS.

Asked if a new challenge in the United States might appeal to him further down the line, Gerrard said: “One day that might happen to me, I don’t know.

“I’ve never really discussed it with anyone or thought about it. Maybe one day I would like the chance to go away from Liverpool for a short time and try something different.

“I think Frank has made a great decision. At his age, 36, he’s had a wonderful career and I don’t think he has anything to prove in England any more.

“He’s broken records with Chelsea and won everything with them. I think it’s a perfect move for him.

“But I haven’t given it much thought. That carrot hasn’t been dangled yet.”

Steven Gerrard is holding talks with Liverpool over a possible contract extension, manager Brendan Rodgers has revealed.
The 34-year-old's current deal expires in June 2015, meaning he would be allowed to hold talks with other clubs in January.
Rodgers explained he had met with Gerrard's agent and then approached the club's owners about securing a new deal for the club captain.

Speaking to BT Sport, Rodgers said: 'Steven is a wonderful player. The situation isvery simple.
I have already spoken with Steven's representative over aweek ago so a real productive good conversation and we took that to the ownership and they are obviously now in the process of getting a dealhopefully agreed and done.
In terms of Steven, he's a player of course we want to keep. He has been a big part of my plans since I have been here.
'I've said it a number of times, he's a player that going forward I stillwant to very much be a part of my plans so hopefully that can be donevery soon.'
After losing talismanic striker Luis Suarez in the summer, Rodgers will bekeen to avoid the departure of further influential players.

The Reds boss has also denied talk of a rift between himself and his captain, whose current deal finishes at the end of this season.

Gerrard has already branded rumours of a fallout as "nonsense".

Asked if there was a rift, Rodgers, speaking at a news conference before Tuesday's Premier League game at Leicester, said: "No, 150% no."

Rodgers said Gerrard will be given time to consider the offer but added that money would not be an issue.

"It is a big move not just in his life but in terms of committing where his next contract is going to be," said Rodgers.

"There are probably many things Steven would have to think about in a decision like this but it certainly won't be money.

I have spoken to him often enough and at length and that won't be the case."

"Everyone knows his history at this club. What a player he has been, and still is. I see his talent every day and just need to manage that and think how it can be most effective.

"I love working with Steven Gerrard. I've enjoyed every single minute. I hope that continues."

Back in October, Gerrard revealed he could join another club if he is not offered a new contract.

The former England captain, who joined Liverpool's youth academy at the age of nine, ruled out the possibility of retirement when his current deal expired in May.

"I will play beyond this season," he said. "We will have to wait and see if that's at Liverpool or somewhere else. That's Liverpool's decision."
