Federico Fazio: Tottenham sign defender from Sevilla



Tottenham have signed defender Federico Fazio from Sevilla on a four-year deal for an undisclosed fee.
The 27-year-old has won two caps for Argentina and won the Europa League with Sevilla last season.
He is Tottenham's fourth summer signing after Swansea pair Ben Davies and Michel Vorm and defender Eric Dier from Sporting Lisbon.
The centre-back will replace Michael Dawson in the Spurs squad after his move to Hull this week.

Transfer news: Tottenham turn to Sevilla's Federico Fazio in hunt for new centre-half



Tottenham are interested in signing Argentina international Federico Fazio from Sevilla, according to Sky sources.

The 27-year-old centre-half was instrumental in the Spanish club’s Europa League triumph last season, captaining the side whilst making 38 appearances in all competitions.

Fazio, capped twice for Argentina, more recently produced a superb display in the UEFA Super Cup final defeat to Real Madrid

and Spurs have now turned their attention towards him after problems emerged over a deal for Villarreal centre-back and fellow Argentinian Mateo Musacchio.

Sky Sports reported earlier this month that Tottenham had opened talks with Villarreal over Musacchio, 23,

but those discussions reached an impasse with the player’s third-party ownership.

And a deal for Fazio may already be progressing more soundly

after Sevilla manager Unai Emery strongly suggested on Friday that Tottenham have already met the player’s £8million release clause.

Emery, whose side play Valencia in their opening La Liga fixture on Saturday, said: “Federico belongs to our staff but he has little or no chance of playing for us tomorrow.

“We cannot deny the fact he gave a very high level of performance in his last game, the Super Cup, which was instrumental in teams being interested.

“Clearly we would all prefer him to stay, but thinking about tomorrow's game we will have to look elsewhere.

The player has constantly given his all to Sevilla. It remains only that we wish him well.

“When I arrived he was criticised as a player and about to leave for an amount much lower than this.

But he has grown so much, and in his renewed contract his price was set far above what was previously offered for him.

“But his performances have been so high that he has outgrown that clause. Fazio is worth more than that, but those are the rules of the game."

Fazio joined Sevilla from Buenos Aires-based club Ferro Carril Oeste in 2007 and has made almost 150 appearances for the club.

Tottenham target Fazio set for Sevilla departure, confirms Emery

Sevilla manager Unai Emery has confirmed that Tottenham target Federico Fazio will not play against Valencia as he is set to leave the club.

Tottenham had lined up a ?21 million move for Villarreal centre-back Mateo Musacchio but have turned to Fazio after third-party issues complicated their pursuit of the 23-year-old.

And Emery has now confirmed that Fazio is set to depart Ramon Sanchez Pijuan after seven years -

for a fee matching his reported ?10 million release clause - having made just under 200 appearances for the club.

"I have followed Fazio's evolution for a year and a half. When I arrived he was criticised," he said.

"In a year and a half he has grown tremendously and his release clause has stayed low, but that's football. Fazio is worth much more than that.

We all feel sad that he is leaving."

However, Emery conceded that he would have liked to have retained the services of the 27-year-old, admitting:

"He was our captain, his evolution has been incredible up until the last game that he played and this has attracted other clubs.

"If he goes it will be for the release clause in his contract but we would prefer it that he does not go. We wish him the best, we will want to replace him."

Should Fazio join Spurs he will become their fourth defensive signing of the summer, following the arrivals of Eric Dier, Ben Davies and goalkeeper Michel Vorm.

Tottenham will pay Fazio's release clause - Sevilla

Sevilla have confirmed that Tottenham are closing in on a move for defender Federico Fazio.

Mauricio Pochettino has been looking for a new centre-back since arriving at White Hart Lane, with a move for Villarreal's Mateo Musacchio falling through earlier this month.

The former Southampton boss is set on stamping his mark on the team, with Michael Dawson set to move on to Hull City, and it appears he may now finally have his brand new defender.

Sevilla manager Unai Emery had resigned himself to losing the player last week

and the Spanish club's sporting director Monchi says that they have tried to keep hold of Fazio - but he seems destined for a move to north London.

"It seems that Tottenham is willing to pay the [release] clause," Monchi told reporters.

"We are waiting to see the money in the Football League. We are not going to negotiate with anyone because our desire is to keep Fazio in Sevilla.

"Two months ago we talked about his renewal, but it was not possible.

When an English team appears interested in one of our players it is difficult because they can multiply player salaries

"We tried to renew him since last season but the distances were huge even if we were hoping to make a new deal."

Fazio is the second defender Sevilla have lost to a Premier League side this summer,

with Alberto Moreno leaving for Liverpool after their Uefa Super Cup defeat at the hands of Real Madrid.
