Eliaquim Mangala: Man City sign Porto defender for £32m

Manchester City have signed defender Eliaquim Mangala from Porto for a fee understood to be about £32m.
The 23-year-old Frenchman came close to joining City in January and was inadvertently pictured in a 'signing' video on the club's website last month.
"He is already a fine player," said City boss Manuel Pellegrini.
"But, in my opinion, he has all of the mental, physical, technical and tactical attributes to become one of Europe's very best defenders."
He added: "Eliaquim is a player I believe will make an immediate impact in the Premier League, thanks to his physicality, his reading of the game and quality on the ball.
"I think he will prove to be a great signing for us."
Mangala was in France's 2014 Fifa World Cup squad but did not play in any games.
"City is a top club in Europe," he told the City website.
"For me, it was an important step to leave Porto and join Manchester City in order to continue my progress.
"I want to win titles and I believe I can do this. I am ambitious and this is why I am here."

He has become City's sixth summer signing and their second from Porto, after Brazilian midfielder Fernando joined for about £12m.
Former Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard joined on loan from New York City FC, while fellow midfielder Bruno Zuculini was signed from Argentine side Racing Club.
Goalkeeper Willy Caballero moved from Malaga for £4.4m while former Arsenal right-back Bacary Sagna was signed on a free transfer.
Mangala began his career with Standard Liege in 2008, winning the league in his first season, before joining Porto in 2011.
He won two Portuguese titles and made his France debut in a 1-0 defeat by Uruguay in June 2013.
Mangala added: "The fact that Fernando is here is better because I played with him at Porto
but there is also other players that I know like Sagna, [Gael] Clichy and [Samir] Nasri."

Manchester City's prolonged pursuit of Eliaquim Mangala is poised to come to a successful conclusion
after the France international decided to sign for the Premier League champions.

City have agreed a ?40 million deal with Porto, while the 23-year-old is scheduled to join pre-season training following a post-World Cup holiday.

City have prioritised the recruitment of an elite central defender to deploy alongside Vincent Kompany for over a year now.

They came close to signing Mangala in January,

with the investment trust that owns a percentage of the player's economic rights prepared to accept an offer below his valuation but Porto refusing it.

Delaying until the summer window opened up the possibility of other interested parties convincing Mangala to move elsewhere.

Targeted by Jose Mourinho since before the manager's return to Chelsea,

Mangala publicly expressed his preference for the west London club in May and refused to sign terms with any of his suitors until the end of France's World Cup campaign.

Aware that they might lose Mangala to a direct rival, City are understood to have set a deadline of Sunday for him to accept their approach.

As an insurance policy, an outline deal had been put in place with Roma for Morocco international Mehdi Benatia.

The demand for physically robust defenders who are also capable ball players has seen centre-back become one of the hardest positions for Champions League clubs to fill,

leading Paris Saint-Germain to spend ?50m acquiring David Luiz from Chelsea at the beginning of this summer.

While widely admired, Mangala does not come without an element of risk.

Brought from Standard Liege for ?7.5m in 2011,

Mangala played less than a 100 first-team games over his three seasons at Porto and has yet to establish himself as a starter for his national team.

His form deteriorated during a difficult campaign in which the Portuguese title was ceded to Benfica.

Arguably the most successful transfer-market operators in European football, Porto have entered discussions to bring Portugal centre back Bruno Alves back to the club.

Fenerbahce are asking for a fee of ?6m for the 32-year-old, who would be expected to make a large salary sacrifice to complete the deal.

Manchester City are in advanced talks with Porto to sign France defender Eliaquim Mangala for about £32m.
The 23-year-old came close to joining City in January and the club are hopeful of finalising a move next week.
Mangala played in all five of France's matches at the World Cup, including their quarter-final defeat to Germany.
He began his career with Standard Liege in 2008 when they won the Belgian League and then joined Porto in 2011, winning two Portuguese Liga titles.

Manchester City are in talks with Porto over the signing of defender Eliaquim Mangala, according to Sky sources.

The 23-year-old has long been a target for City,

with the France international viewed as the ideal player to slot in alongside captain Vincent Kompany at the heart of the defence.

The club attempted to sign Mangala during the January transfer window but were unable to agree terms with the player.

But reports in Portugal suggest Mangala, who was part of France's squad for the World Cup in Brazil, is now poised to head to Manchester for his medical.

Mangala began his career with Standard Liege in 2008, before joining Porto in 2011 where he has won two league titles.

City have already signed midfielder Fernando from Porto this summer,

while Malaga goalkeeper Willy Caballero and Arsenal full-back Bacary Sagna have also been added to Manuel Pellegrini's options.

Eliaquim Mangala: Manchester City website shows 'signing' video

Manchester City have released a video that appears to show Porto defender Eliaquim Mangala signing for the club.
The France international, 23, has been linked with a £32m move to City and was spotted in Manchester this month but no official announcement has been made.
However, a clip on the club's website - which has since been taken down - shows the player undergoing a medical.
City say their system was hacked, that the video should not have gone out and that the deal has not been completed.
A spokesman said: "Our video storage system for City TV has been hacked and the video was leaked.
The deal is not done or officially confirmed on our website."
The footage, shot for City TV, shows a private jet touching down at Manchester Airport accompanied
by the caption "9am: French international defender Eliaquim Mangala arrives in Manchester."
The player then disembarks and is met by club officials. "City's newest signing en-route to his medical," proclaims the next caption.

Mangala, dressed in a black leather jacket, black jeans and a white shirt,
is then taken in a chauffeur-driven Mercedes to the club's Carrington training ground where he is shown the gym.
He is asked to give a message to City fans.
"I am here to help the team win titles, the league, the cup and the Champions League,"
he says. "I am ambitious and this is why I am here."
He is then asked what his ambition is with City.
"To play as many games as possible and to help the team the best I can to be champions of England."
Mangala, who was in the France squad for the recent 2014 Fifa World Cup but remained an unused substitute throughout the tournament, came close to joining City in January.
