Southampton have confirmed the signing of England international goalkeeper Fraser Forster from Celtic.

The 26-year-old has joined the club on a four-year deal for a fee believed to be in the region of £10million.

Sky Sports reported on Friday that Forster was travelling to the south coast to discuss personal terms after the clubs agreed the transfer, and he underwent a medical on Saturday.

In moving to St Mary’s, Forster is reunited with England goalkeeper coach Dave Watson.

Saints boss Ronald Koeman said: “Fraser is a very talented player and we are delighted to be able to bring him to Southampton.

“This is another important part of our rebuilding process ahead of the start of the season.

“The fact that he has worked with Dave Watson before means we already know all about his strengths and weaknesses,

and I am confident that we will be able to help him improve even further.

“Fraser is the perfect fit to help complement the players we already have, and he will add a lot of quality to the squad.

“He is an exciting English player with a very good reputation within the game and, at 26, he will enjoy the best years of his career at Southampton.”

Southampton are preparing to make an increased offer for Celtic goalkeeper Fraser Forster, according to Sky sources.

The Scottish champions turned down a bid described as ‘derisory’ on Tuesday, believed to be around £3.5m for the England international.

Forster earned a place in England’s World Cup squad after impressing Roy Hodgson with a string of superb performances in the Champions League for Celtic.

In February this year Forster set a new Scottish league record for consecutive shut-outs,

passing former Aberdeen goalkeeper Bobby Clark’s achievement from 1971, by going 13 matches and 1,256 minutes without losing a goal.

The 26-year-old is highly valued by Celtic, and it is expected they would demand at least £10m for his services.

Forster played in both legs of Celtic’s Champions League qualifying tie against KR Reykjavic, keeping two clean sheets as the Glasgow side won 5-0 on aggregate.

In the second leg at Edinburgh’s Murrayfield Stadium, the Hoops eased to victory with Virgil van Dijk and Teemu Pukki both scoring twice.

And Pukki is desperate to see the former Newcastle keeper - known affectionately to the Celtic faithful as 'the Great Wall', remain at Celtic Park.

"It's so important for every player to reach the group stages of the Champions League,” Pukki said.

"It's the best place to play football so we all want to be there. That's our main aim in the next few weeks.

"And it's important that we keep Fraser because he's one of the best keepers in the world. So we want him to stay.

He's one of the most vital parts of this team, he showed that last season and for a few years before.

“He's important to the club. It might be difficult to hold onto him because there are many teams after him. But personally, I hope he stays because he's a great keeper."

Southampton are close to tying up a deal to sign Celtic goalkeeper Fraser Forster, sources have told ESPN.
Forster, a part of the England squad that travelled to this summer's World Cup finals,
is a target for Southampton but Celtic will not give a green light to the deal until after the second leg of their Champions League qualifier with Legia Warsaw on Wednesday.
Celtic trail their Polish opponents 4-1 from the first leg of the third qualifying round tie, with their exit from Europe's elite competition likely to signal the end of Forster's time at the club.
The 26 year old's future in Glasgow may have already been offset by Celtic with the signing of Craig Gordon.
St Mary's appears to be Forster's most likely destination, with his arrival likely to herald the departure of former Celtic keeper Artur Boruc from the club.
Forster has never played a Premier League game despite being owned by Newcastle for six years.
Boruc was a key member of the Southampton side that secured an impressive eighth-placed finish in the Premier League last season,
but sources say he has not impressed new Southampton manager Ronald Koeman during pre-season and is expected to move on in this transfer window.
Southampton club captain Kelvin Davis would be expected to remain as the No.2 keeper in that event.
Forster's move will be delayed if Celtic turn around their Champions League qualifier at Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh on Wednesday,
as they would want him available for the subsequent play-off for a place in the group stage.

Forster recently travelled with the England squad to the 2014 FIFA World Cup finals, where he worked with Southampton’s new Senior Goalkeeping Coach, Dave Watson.

The Northumberland-born custodian began his career with Newcastle United,

and had loan spells at Stockport County, Bristol Rovers and Norwich City before joining Celtic in 2010.

After winning three league titles and two Scottish cups as well as gaining UEFA Champions League experience during his time in Glasgow,

Forster now moves to St Mary’s ahead of the 2014/15 campaign.
