Arsenal boss Wenger confirms Arteta and Mertesacker as Gunners’ new captain and vice-captain 
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has confirmed Mikel Arteta will be first-team captain for the upcoming Premier League season. The Gunners boss made the announcement during his post-match press conference after his side beat Manchester City 3-0 to lift the Community Shield at Wembley.
The Frenchman also confirmed that Per Mertesacker will be the club’s vice-captain. The Gunners need for a new club skipper was a result of the £15m move of Belgium international Thomas Vermaelen, Arsenal’s former captain, to La Liga giants Barcelona.
There was a growing feeling among Arsenal fans that Aaron Ramsey should receive the armband following his leading performances over the past 12 months.
But Wenger has opted to side by experience rather than youthful exuberance, handing the responsibilities to senior members of the Gunners squad.
