Premier League: Liverpool have signed Dejan Lovren from Southampton



Liverpool have completed the signing of Croatian centre-back Dejan Lovren from Southampton for £20m on a long-term deal.

The fee was agreed between the two clubs on Friday and Lovren has now signed a contract after completing a medical in Liverpool.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Lovren said: "It's a dream come true. I'm happy and glad to be here.

I'm proud and can't wait to start. I know we have millions and millions of supporters - Liverpool is more than a club.

"After I played at Anfield last season, I said to myself: 'One day I hope I'll be able to play here for Liverpool'.

“The fans will know from the first minute that I'm a player that will give 100 per cent on the pitch."

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers added: "This is a very important signing for us and I'm delighted it's completed so Dejan can join up with us on our US tour,

"He is a commanding and powerful presence and clearly has leadership skills, which is important; he fits the profile of player we are looking for."

Lovren becomes the most expensive defender in Liverpool’s history with the fee exceeding the £18m the Merseysiders paid Paris Saint Germain for France international Mamadou Sakho last year.

The former Lyon defender had been linked with a transfer to Anfield throughout the summer, with Rodgers earmarking the 25-year-old as his primary target to reinforce his backline.

Lovren is the third player to trade Southampton for Liverpool this summer, following England duo Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana in making the switch to Merseyside.  

Southampton paid Lyon £8.5m for the Croatia international 13 months ago and he followed up an excellent first season at St Mary’s with some impressive performances during this summer’s World Cup.

Lovren is Liverpool’s fifth signing ahead of the new season so far as Rodgers strengthens his squad ahead of their return to the Champions League.

In addition to Lambert and Lallana, Liverpool have also signed Germany U21 midfielder Emre Can from Bayer Leverkusen and Serbian winger Lazar Markovic from Benfica.

Lille’s Belgian striker Divock Origi is also understood to have undergone a medical with Liverpool and is expected to sign for the club imminently.

But one man who won’t be joining Liverpool this summer is QPR striker Loic Remy after the club pulled the plug on an £8.5 move for the France international.

Dejan Lovren has submitted a formal written transfer request demanding to leave Southampton.
Sportsmail Online can reveal that the central defender wrote an email to executive director Les Reed
and chairman Ralph Krueger on May 30 with notice of his desire to leave St Mary's this summer.
In the email, the defender outlined his ambition to play Champions League football next season and wants to move this summer.

Despite Lovren's determination to leave in this transfer window that the club have yet to acknowledge receipt of his signed email.
Lovren, who joined Southampton at the start of last season, claims the changes to management have also affected his decision.
Executive chairman Nicola Cortese left in January and manager Mauricio Pochettino has quit to become the new Tottenham boss.
The club have yet to appoint a manager to succeed Pochettino, but have always insisted cash would be made available to the new coach to strengthen the team.

Lovren held talks with Saints at the end of the season after Liverpool, who are among a number of clubs who want to sign the Croatian, made their interest known.
He then followed up that meeting with an email detailing the reasons behind his decision to leave Southampton.
Lovren, 24, was signed from Lyon last summer for £7m is determined to quit the club to stay in the Barclays Premier League with a top four team.
The defender, who was outstanding in his first season at the club, is among a number of players who want to leave.
Captain Adam Lallana wants to move to Liverpool after the World Cup and young left-back Luke Shaw is on the verge of a switch to Manchester United when he returns from Brazil.
Striker Rickie Lambert, also on international duty with England at the World Cup, has already sealed a £4m move to Liverpool.

Arsenal in pole position to beat Liverpool to Dejan Lovren as Southampton exodus continues

AFTER Manchester United confirmed the signing of Luke Shaw and Liverpoool agreed a fee for Adam Lallana,

Dejan Lovren could be the next Southampton player to leave with Arsenal stepping up their interest in the Croatian.

Shaw moved to Old Trafford on a four-year deal this afternoon while Liverpool have agreed a £25m fee with the Saints for Lallana.

It was thought that Liverpool were also the frontrunners for Lovren but recent reports suggest that Arsenal are now in pole position.

Indeed, there were even suggestions that Lovren had handed in a transfer request.

The player's desire to leave will only have been strengthened by watching first Mauricio Pochettino leave for Spurs,

then seeing Rickie Lambert join Liverpool and finally also watching Shaw and Lallana heading for the exit.

And Arsene Wenger would be very happy to accommodate the player's wishes by offering him a move to the Emirates.

It now remains to be seen whether Southampton fight to keep hold of Lovren having already lost so many key components of the side that was so impressive last season.

Of course, the Saints could be set to hand Ronald Koeman a substantial transfer budget this summer given the money they have received.

Sky sources understand that Southampton are reluctant to let any other players leave, despite speculation linking Dejan Lovren with a possible move.

Saints have already sold three of their star players this summer, with midfielder Adam Lallana

and striker Rickie Lambert joining Liverpool, while defender Luke Shaw has signed for Manchester United.

The loss of the England trio has weakened the squad at St Mary's and reports have suggested that Liverpool, Arsenal and Spurs are keen to lure defender Lovren away.

But new manager Ronald Koeman is determined to keep the rest of his players as he starts planning for the upcoming Premier League campaign.

The Dutchman, who succeeded Mauricio Pochettino last month, is more interested in recruiting players, with the club thought to have tabled a bid for Feyenoord striker Graziano Pelle.

Saints are also thought to be closing on a deal for winger Dusan Tadic after agreeing a fee with FC Twente.
