City are delighted to announce the signing of Brazilian midfielder Fernando.

The 26-year-old will join the Club from Porto and will wear the number six shirt next season.

A defensive midfielder by trade, he began his career at Vila Nova in Brazil before moving to Porto in 2007

where he won four Primeira Liga titles, two Portuguese Cups and a Europa League medal.

His first European season was spent on loan to fellow Portuguese side Estrela da Amadora,

where he gained important playing experience as an undisputed starter. He returned to Porto the following season and immediately cemented his place in the squad.

Fernando, who will join up with his new team-mates for pre-season training in a fortnight, said: “I am so happy to finally be joining Manchester City.

“I know there was talk of me possibly signing last January so I am delighted that the deal has now been done and that I am a City player.

“I’m looking forward to meeting my new team-mates and helping City to defend the title.

It is a very exciting time to be part of this football club and I cannot wait to play in the Premier League.

“City fans can be assured I will give my all every time I play and I’m looking forward to many happy years in Manchester.

“I have enjoyed my stay with Porto and I thank the club and the fans for their support during my time in Portugal. Now I am ready for a new chapter in my career.”

Portuguese midfield ace set to be first City signing of the summer




City are hoping to wrap up the £12.2m signing of Porto midfielder Fernando this week.

And with the Blues still favourites to land Arsenal right-back Bacary Sagna,

they are planning to get most of their transfer business done before the World Cup kicks off next week.

Sources in Portugal claim that City have already agreed a fee for defensive midfielder Fernando,

with the price rising to £16.2m depending on the player’s achievements.

City first tried to sign the Brazil-born Fernando, who is now a Portuguese citizen,

during the January transfer window and had hope to land him for around £6m with his contract due to expire this summer.

Fernando signed a new deal as Porto played hardball, upping the price when the Blues recently returned to the negotiating table.

But City see him as the man to bring their central midfield contingent back up to four, with Jack Rodwell set to leave after two injury-hit seasons.

Gareth Barry will also leave on a free transfer as his contract expires,

with Premier League newcomers Leicester said to have made him a lucrative offer, although Barry is also wanted by Everton and West Ham.

Sagna’s future may not be revealed until after France’s World Cup campaign ends,

but City are in the box-seat to tie him to a three-year deal after his contract with Arsenal expired.

City are also aiming to pick up a new central defender and have been talking to Porto about their £25m-rated

France international Eliaquim Mangala and to Roma about Moroccan star Mehdi Benatia.

Roma insist they want £30m for Benatia, and any deal for Mangala would not be completed until after France’s World Cup campaign is over.

Fernando had medical earlier this month in England, and personal terms were already agreed - fee was last thing to be done. Good signing.

Manchester City sign Porto midfielder Fernando

Manchester City have signed Porto midfielder Fernando for a fee of ?15 million [£12m], the Portuguese club have confirmed.

As reported by Goal in May, the 26-year-old and right-back Bacary Sagna were top of Manuel Pellegrini's transfer wishlist for the summer.

Sagna's move on a free transfer was confirmed earlier this month, which Fernando becoming the champions' second close-season recruit.

City tabled a joint bid for Fernando and team-mate Eliaquim Mangala in January,

though the deal could not be completed before the transfer deadline - with the former then signing a new contract with Porto.

Confirmation of the deal was initial held up due to complications, with Fernando's agent, Antonio Araujo, confident the move would happen last month.

He told Maisfutebol: "Fernando is in the city of Porto waiting for Porto tell him their decision about the documents they have received so that he can travel immediately [to Manchester]."

Fernando, who was denied the opportunity to represent Portugal, has been targeted by City for his midfield anchorman qualities a

nd will compete with the likes of Fernandinho and Yaya Toure for a starting berth.
