Premier League: Liverpool agree deal to sign Emre Can from Bayer Leverkusen



Brendan Rodgers is close to completing his second signing of the summer

after Liverpool announced they have agreed a deal in principle to sign Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Emre Can.

The 20-year-old made 29 appearances for Leverkusen in the Bundesliga last season, scoring on three occasions.

The Frankfurt-born midfielder moved to the BayArena from Bayern Munich in 2013

and is set to become Liverpool's second signing following the capture of Rickie Lambert from Southampton.

It is understood that Can has already signed his contract and will be officially unveiled as a Liverpool player on July 1,

subject to all the relevant paperwork being completed.  A statement on Liverpool's official website read:

"Liverpool FC have today agreed a deal in principle with Bayer Leverkusen to sign 20-year-old Emre Can, subject to documentation being completed."


Can is understood to have had a £9.75m release clause effective for foreign clubs

and it is reported Bayern will receive £1.2m as compensation for waiving their buy-back option on the midfielder.

The deal appears to have been agreed on Wednesday night after Leverkusen chief executive Michael Schade confirmed they had received an offer from Liverpool earlier in the day.

"Until Tuesday, it was a rumour," Schade told German newspaper Bild on Wednesday.

"Now I can confirm that an official offer from Liverpool is received by mail."

Schade wished Can every success in the Premier League in a statement on Bayer Leverkusen's official website on Thursday.

"Emre Can has developed very quickly at Bayer 04 Leverkusen over the past 12 months," he said.

"We wanted to keep Emre at Leverkusen but the release clause is part of his contract.

So we wish him all the best and lots of success in his time in the Premier League."

The potential acquisition of Can will give Liverpool manager Rodgers greater options next seasons with the club competing in the UEFA Champions League for the first time in five years.

The versatile Germany U21 international is capable of operating in a number of positions across the midfield and defence.

Can, who is also eligible to represent Turkey at international level due to his ancestry, had emerged as a target for Liverpool over the past few months.

He has played under former Liverpool captain Sami Hyypia during the Finn's tenure as manger of Bayer Leverkusen.

Reds agree Emre Can deal in principle



A versatile German youth international, the Frankfurt-born midfielder made 29 Bundesliga appearances last season, scoring three goals.

His contributions helped Leverkusen finish fourth and secure Champions League qualification, having joined the club from Bayern Munich last summer.

Can clocked up seven appearances in Europe's elite competition during 2013-14, and has previously played at the European U21 Championship and the U17 World Cup.

The news follows the announcement on Monday of England striker Rickie Lambert as the Reds' first signing of the summer transfer window.

Liverpool are in advanced talks with Bayer Leverkusen over a deal for Germany Under-21 midfielder Emre Can.
The 20-year-old has a £10m release clause in his contract and Liverpool have indicated they are willing to meet that figure.
The deal had appeared to stall over the weekend because of the player's personal terms.
But talks are progressing more smoothly now and all parties are hopeful a deal can be concluded in the coming week.
Can, who is also eligible for Turkey, joined Leverkusen from Bayern Munich last summer in a deal worth £4m.
He impressed Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers with a series of combative performances
that helped Leverkusen finish fourth in the Bundesliga and reach next season's Champions League.
The Frankfurt-born player prefers to play in central midfield but can also operate in defence.

Liverpool's bid to sign Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Emre Can appears to be edging closer after the Germans claimed a formal offer had been received from the Reds.

The Merseysiders have been in talks about Can, a Germany Under-21 international, for some time and they have now made their move.

"Until Tuesday, it was a rumour," Leverkusen chief executive Michael Schade told German newspaper Bild.

"Now I can confirm that an official offer from Liverpool is received by mail."

Can has a 12million euro (£9.75million) release clause effective for foreign clubs and it is reported that the

buy-back option Bayern Munich inserted into the deal which took him to Leverkusen for £4.4million last summer is no longer valid.

Liverpool were hopeful of progressing the deal last weekend and, despite claims Can's wage demands were a stumbling block,

it is believed there were other as yet unspecified issues which needed to be sorted out.

If the deal is concluded Can would become Brendan Rodgers' second signing of the summer after he brought in striker Rickie Lambert from Southampton for £4million on Monday.

A take-it-or-leave-it offer of £25million for Lambert's team-mate Adam Lallana remains on the table

but Liverpool are looking at alternatives should the Saints refuse to lower their £30million asking price, compounded by the 25 per cent sell-on clause agreed with Bournemouth.

The club are also trying to push through a deal for Sevilla left-back Alberto Moreno but are wary the Spanish club are trying to create an auction

for the 21-year-old in order to inflate the asking price, which Liverpool currently believe is about £16million.
