Manchester City are on the verge of completing the signing of Malaga goalkeeper Willy Caballero, Goal understands.

The Argentine will fly into Manchester in the next 24 hours, having cut short his post-season holiday,

to undergo a medical and is expected to sign a three-year deal with the Premier League champions.

Goal understands that City have already agreed a ?8 million fee with Malaga for the shot-stopper,

who has made over 100 Primera Division appearances for the Spanish side since signing from Elche back in 2011.

City are looking for a goalkeeper to challenge Joe Hart for the No.1 jersey next season,

with Costel Pantilimon having left the club to join Sunderland after his contract expired earlier in the summer.

Hart was again called into question for his performances with England at the World Cup,

while he was dropped by City boss Manuel Pellegrini during the 2013-14 campaign after a series of high-profile errors.

Caballero, who worked with Pellegrini during his time in charge of Malaga, has developed a reputation as one of the leading goalkeepers in Spain's top flight

and was previously linked with Barcelona before the Catalans signed Claudio Bravo from Real Sociedad.

Manchester City are in advanced talks to sign Malaga goalkeeper Willy Caballero.
BBC Sport understands Caballero, 32, was in Manchester on Monday morning and club officials hope to seal the move imminently.
Meanwhile, City say they are not interested in Barcelona winger Alexis Sanchez, who is in talks with Arsenal.
Argentine Cabellero played under City manager Manuel Pellegrini when he was in charge of Malaga from 2010-2013.
Caballero is expected to provide back-up for England number one Joe Hart.
Costel Pantilimon, who had been number two to Hart, joined Sunderland on a free transfer earlier this summer.
Caballero started his career with Boca Juniors in his homeland before joining Spanish outfit Elche in 2004.
He joined Malaga in 2011 and was named La Liga keeper of the season for the 2012-13 term, Pellegrini's last season in charge at the club.

Goalkeeper Wilfredo Caballero is poised to become Manchester City's latest signing



Manchester City are reportedly set to sign goalkeeper Wilfredo Caballero from Malaga on a three-year contract.

The Argentinian had a medical on Monday and the Premier League champions are poised to unveil him as their third signing of the summer.

And the highly-rated Caballero, who is likely to cost around £6m, is seen as having the ability to act as a genuine rival to Joe Hart for the goalkeeper’s jersey at City.

The 32-year-old Caballero was an Olympic gold medal-winner in 2004 with Argentina and impressed during his spell at Malaga,

where he played under City boss Manuel Pellegrini.

The new man will replace Costel Pantilimon, who has left for Sunderland, in the City squad.

Pantilimon usurped Hart as City’s Premier League goalkeeper for a brief period last autumn but primarily acted as an understudy to the England man.

City have already signed full-back Bacary Sagna and midfielder Fernando this summer, as they prepare for the defence of their crown.

The 32-year-old has joined the club from Malaga on a 3 year deal and will bring a wealth of experience as he joins fellow keepers Joe Hart and Richard Wright.

He is the Club's third signing of the summer, with Fernando and Bacary Sagna also joining City in the past month.

Caballero exclusively told mcfc.co.uk: “I am very happy, and really looking forward to the start of pre-season and performing well to help the team.

“This is a new challenge and a new league for me.

I have been doing well in the previous years and my goal is to go on and hopefully perform at the same level for City.

“I know I am coming to a big club with a very good goalkeeper.

City already have a great goalkeeper in Joe Hart, but I will try and compete for the no.1 spot. I will do my best in the training sessions.”

Caballero began his career in his homeland with Boca Juniors, where he won the Argentine Primera League, Copa Libertadores and Intercontinental Cup in 2003.

He moved to Spain in 2004 and spent seven years with Elche, before linking up with Manuel Pellegrini at Malaga.

The stopper entered the club’s record books by going 480 consecutive minutes without conceding, and gained valuable Champions League experience during his time with the La Liga side.

He revealed: “The most beautiful moments of my career were under Manuel Pellegrini in Malaga, where we achieved big things and we made Malaga’s name known around Europe.

“As for my new team-mates, I have a very good relationship with Martin Demichelis, but I’ve never met Pablo Zabaleta and Sergio Aguero.

It’s something I’m looking forward to. For me it is very good to have people from Argentina in the squad because I think it will be very helpful.

“I spoke to Roque Santa Cruz and Demichelis, and they told me that Manchester is a very beautiful city and very welcoming, so that will be great for my family and I can’t wait to enjoy it.”
