Tottenham Hotspur will hand Eric Dier a new five-year contract as reward for his superb form for club and country. Dier, who will become one of the club’s best-paid players on around £70,000-a-week, was one of Tottenham’s stand-out performers last season after being converted into a defensive midfielder by manager Mauricio Pochettino. The 22-year-old was also one of very few players to come out of England’s Euro 2016 campaign with credit.
Dier was England’s outstanding player in the group games and was struck down by illness ahead of the last-16 defeat to Iceland and had to be substituted.
His performances for Tottenham and in France attracted the interest of a host of big clubs at home and abroad, with Bayern Munich manager Carlo Ancelotti hailing him as one of the best players at the European Championships.
Dier only signed a new five-year deal at Spurs last summer, but chairman Daniel Levy has acted to make sure the former Sporting Lisbon youngster cannot be poached away. His new contract will run until 2021 and will delight Pochettino and his backroom staff, who have been determined to keep their best players. Central defender Kevin Wimmer has also signed a new five-year deal on improved terms.
Pochettino himself signed a new Spurs contract in May and is on the verge of completing his third signing of the summer – winger Georges-Kevin N’Koudou from Marseille.
