Van Gaal ends United's Kroos chasel



Manchester United are no longer trying to sign Toni Kroos after new manager Louis van Gaal decided to pursue other targets, a club source has told ESPN.
The midfielder was wanted at Old Trafford by former manager David Moyes, who scouted him extensively.
But Van Gaal, who managed Kroos during his reign in charge of Bayern Munich, will not bid for the 24-year-old.
The Dutchman inherited a list of targets from Moyes, who revamped United's scouting system and compiled short-lists of players to try and sign this summer.
Moyes, who said United needed a "fundamental rebuilding" of the squad this summer,
was eager to strengthen in the centre of midfield and Van Gaal is also expected to sign in that department.
Kroos, whose passing game has made him a key member of Bayern's team, was identified as his current contract with the German champions expires in 2015.

Bayern manager Pep Guardiola has suggested he is keen to keep Kroos and the club are eager to offer him an extended deal.
But they have also warned Kroos that they will not be held to ransom, with president Karl Hopfner telling German magazine kicker: "We will not overstep certain financial limits."
Kroos responded to Hopfner's quotes later on Thursday, telling German newspaper Bild he had expected the club to make such comments.
"I have to accept and respect it," Kroos said. "But, honestly, I had expected nothing else when I turned down the club's offer earlier this year."
Van Gaal has also been linked with Roma midfielder Kevin Strootman, a player he knows from his time managing Holland, and Barcelona's Cesc Fabregas,
who was wanted by Moyes last summer.

Transfer news: Bayern Munich will not increase Toni Kroos contract offer



Bayern Munich president Karl Hopfner insists the club will not increase their contract offer to Toni Kroos.

The Germany midfielder, whose current deal expires next summer, has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United,

with reports claiming a deal between the two clubs is imminent.

New president Hopfner warned Bayern's current offer would not remain on the table indefinitely.

"There will certainly be further talks. But at some point the player has to say what he wants," Hopfner said in an interview with Kicker magazine.

"We will not exceed certain financial boundaries."

Hopfner pointed to the case of Michael Ballack, who left the club for Chelsea in 2006, as a similar example.

"It was the same with Michael Ballack and at some point we withdrew the offer," he added.

Louis van Gaal has ended Manchester United’s interest in Toni Kroos,
in what represents the new manager’s first major decision regarding the rebuilding of his squad this summer.

The Bayern Munich midfielder had been pursued by David Moyes, Van Gaal’s predecessor,
with the 24-year-old identified as being able to help solve the deficit in United’s central midfield department.

Kroos, who impressed in a deep-lying role when Bayern knocked United out of last season’s Champions League,
has only a year left to run on his contract at the German club.

Yet despite his ability to also play in the No10 role or as box-to-box midfielder, Van Gaal,
who is aware of Kroos’s abilities from his own time managing Bayern, has decided he should not be a target for the club this close season.

Paul Scholes, who was United’s last top-line operator in the position until he retired in 2013,
believes Kroos should be the prime choice as the 20-times champions seek to re-establish itself as contenders.

“The first player I’d bring in is Toni Kroos. He’s a top-class central midfield player but United need five or six to
get anywhere near the top of the Premier League again,” he told Paddy Power.

Kroos’s current deal expires next summer but Bayern are still playing hardball over a new contract offer.

Transfer news: Toni Kroos expects to stay at Bayern Munich next season



Bayern Munich midfielder Toni Kroos is expecting to still be at the Allianz Arena next season and understands the club's stance regarding a new contract.

Kroos only has a further season to run on his existing deal with the Bundesliga champions and he has been offered an extension by Bayern.

However, Bayern president Karl Hopfner stated on Thursday that, while further talks are possible, the club would not be improving the contract offer to Kroos.

The Germany international has been strongly linked with a move to Manchester United,

although reports have suggested the Premier League club are no longer interested in signing Kroos following Louis van Gaal's appointment as manager.

The 24-year-old has no problems with Bayern's stance regarding their contract offer and now wants to focus on playing for Germany at the World Cup in Brazil.

"I am expecting to play for Bayern Munich next season," said Kroos in a statement to BILD.

"At this point in time I am fully focused on preparations for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

"I know that I have to accept and respect the recent statements of the authorities at Bayern Munich.

"Still, honestly, I did not expect anything else in that respect after I had turned down the offer of a new contract I received from the club at the start of the current calendar year."

Hopfner had compared the situation with Kroos to that of Michael Ballack, who left Bayern for Chelsea in 2006 on a free transfer.
