Knee injury sidelines Javi Martinez





Javi Martinez says there is a "99 percent chance" that he tore an ACL in his knee in Bayern Munich's 2-0 defeat to Borussia Dortmund in the German Super Cup on Wednesday.
Martinez was airborne while trying to volley a cross when his follow-through struck a Dortmund defender.
The Spain international fell to the ground in pain and was replaced by Dante in the 31st minute.
"I've knackered my knee and right now, I'm on the team bus.
I've spoken to the doctor and he's told me that there is a 99 percent chance that I have torn my cruciate and external ligaments,"
the player said on a video published on his Facebook page.
"If it is the cruciate ligament that is damaged, they will operate tomorrow and I'll begin a recovery programme so that I can return even stronger.
I'm determined to come back a better player, I'll be back."
The defensive midfielder is set to undergo scans on Thursday.
Bayern coach Pep Guardiola expressed concern, saying "It will be a long absence" before Martinez can return to the pitch.
"We'll know more tomorrow. But I think he'll be out for a long time," Guardiola said.
Bayern sporting director Matthias Sammer agreed, saying the injury "looks bad. It's a big problem."

Martinez ruled out for 'several months'

Bayern Munich have confirmed Javi Martinez will be out of action for "several months" as a result of the knee injury he suffered against Borussia Dortmund.

The Spain international fell to the turf after an innocuous-looking challenge with Marcel Schmelzer in the first half of Dortmund's 2-0 victory on Wednesday.

He indicated in the immediate aftermath he thought it was a serious injury and that was backed up on Thursday

when Bayern announced he would have to undergo surgery on a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

A Bayern statement read: "Javi Martinez suffered a torn ACL in his left knee during the German Super Cup in Dortmund on Wednesday night

and will not be available to coach Pep Guardiola for the remainder of the year."

It is a big blow for Guardiola who was expected to utilise Martinez's versatility to the full over the coming season.

The former Athletic Bilbao man can operate in midfield and defence

and was an integral part of the Bayern side which won the Champions League in 2013 and retained the domestic double last season.

He was downbeat after hearing the news but vowed to return a better player,

telling the club's official website: "Of course I am very sad but I need you not to worry - I'll come back even stronger."

Martinez is expected to fly to Colorado in the next few days to have surgery before returning to Germany to begin his rehabilitation.
