Striker Benteke to undergo surgery after injury blow



Christian Benteke will undergo surgery after suffering a ruptured Achilles tendon injury today in training.

He will be out for a minimum of six months.

"It's a terrible blow both for Christian and for the Club," said Villa manager Paul Lambert.

"He will miss the rest of the season, obviously, and also the World Cup.

But he'll work hard because that's what he does and he'll come back for us stronger than ever next season."

Sky sources: Injury concern over Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke



Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke may be out for rest of the season after suffering an Achilles injury in training, according to Sky sources.

There are also concerns that the Belgium international could miss this summer's World Cup in Brazil if scans show that the problem is as bad as first feared.

Benteke, 23, has scored 11 goals for Villa this season and his absence would be a big blow for the remaining seven matches of the campaign.

Paul Lambert's side are currently 12th in the Premier League table, eight points above the relegation zone.

Belgium open their World Cup campaign against Algeria on June 17 and Benteke had been tipped to be a key member of their squad.

Benteke's fellow forward Gabby Agbonlahor is also a doubt for Villa's home game against Fulham on Saturday due to a bug.
