Leroy Sane: Manchester City hoping for a breakthrough in their attempts to sign Schalke winger Manchester City are hoping for a breakthrough this week in their efforts to sign Leroy Sane, the highly regarded young Schalke and Germany winger. City head coach, Pep Guardiola, and Christian Heidel, the Schalke sporting director, want a speedy decision from Sane over his futurenow Euro 2016 is over.
Schalke value Sane at around £40 million, a fee City consider high for a 20-year-old with less than 60 senior appearances for the German club to his name, but Guardiola hopes to strike a deal in the event the player signals his determination to move to the Etihad Stadium. City have already signed one winger-cum-forward this summer, with Nolito joining from Celta Vigo for £13.8 million, but the club have been monitoring Sane all season and Guardiola admires his pace and goal threat and believes he has a promising future ahead.
With Guardiola moving last week to reassure Raheem Sterling that he has his backing, even if the England forward will be under pressure to deliver and justify his £49 million fee, the prospect of Sane following Nolito would raise fresh doubts over the future of Jesus Navas, whose poor final ball and dismal goals return do not count in his favour.
City remain in the market for a further five players, with a goalkeeper, right back, two centre-halves and a striker in Guardiola’s sights, and he may yet move for another midfielder after the captures of Ilkay Gundogan and Oleksandr Zinchenko depending on who leaves the club. City are chasing Torino right back Bruno Peres, with Pablo Zabaleta likely to depart, even though the Argentinian’s proposed move to Roma is thought to have run into some complications. Another full-back, Aleksandar Kolarov, is wanted by Besiktas, who have also enquired about taking Vincent Kompany on a season long loan.
Kompany has been warned by Guardiola that he must prove his fitness if he is to have a future under him at City but the club are not interested in loaning out their captain. City also want Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen to put pressure on Joe Hart for the No. 1 spot.
Meanwhile, City have rejected an invitation to field a team in next season’s Football League Trophy, mainly because the early rounds of the competition clash with international Under-21 games.
