Real Madrid believe they will beat Manchester City and Inter Milan to the signature of Valencia and midfielder Andre Gomes. The Spanish giants are willing to pay ?60million (£50m) for the 22-year-old, who was part of Portugal's European Championship winning side in France, according to Marca. The Madrid paper's headline read on Tuesday: 'Andre Gomes, Madrid closer,' above the sub-heading,
'Madrid are confident of reducing the fee to ?50m (£42m) fixed and ?10m (£8.4m) more for objectives. Zidane wants him to relieve (Luka) Modric.'Gomes would be Zidane's first signing of the summer, excluding the recapture of Alvaro Morata from Juventus, and would boost a central midfield area already containing Toni Kroos, Modric and Casemiro.
The honing in on Gomes comes with Zidane's comments that his squad will be difficult to improve, cooling rumours that Real could rival Manchester United for Paul Pogba's signature.
Gomes played 30 times for Valencia last season, scoring three goals and also creating three as his side limped to a disappointing 12th-placed finish. The 22-year-old also set up Nani for Portugal's opening goal in their 1-1 draw with Iceland in France.Nani has joined Valencia from Fenerbahce but it looks increasingly unlikely that he will not get to play alongside his compatriot, with the likes of Manchester City and Inter Milan also keen on Gomes.
Valencia will likely be desperate not to lose one of their star players to Madrid, given the clubs' past relationship over transfer dealings.
Ever since Real triggered a buy-out clause to snatch striker Pedrag Mijatovic in 1997 Valencia have been bullish about refusing to sell to Los Blancos, with Gaizka Mendieta and Roberto Ayala prime examples.
