Chelsea's worst fears over Van Ginkel come true as midfielder is ruled out for the entire season with cruciate ligament injury

Marco van Ginkel will miss the rest of Chelsea's season after the injury he suffered at Swindon on Tuesday night was confirmed as a cruciate ligament injury.
Van Ginkel tried to play on after suffering the injury in the first half of the Blues' 2-0 Capital One Cup victory but was replaced by Ramires
– also taken off at half-time with injury – midway through the first half.
But an MRI scan revealed on Wednesday that the Belgian had torn his ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) and will play no further part in Jose Mourinho's plans this season.

Chelsea assistant first team coach Steve Holland said: ‘It’s too early to say, but it doesn’t look good for Marco.
‘We’ll have to wait for the results of the scan, but we have at least two casualties from this evening.’
Van Ginkel returned to London with the team and will have a scan at the club’s Cobham training centre today.
The Dutch midfielder, signed from Vitesse Arnhem in the summer, fears his injury is serious enough to rule him out for several months.

VAN GINKEL INJURY UPDATE

Chelsea Football Club can confirm Marco van Ginkel successfully underwent anterior cruciate ligament surgery today (Thursday).

The 20-year-old midfielder is expected to be out for approximately six months.

Van Ginkel suffered the knee injury during the first half of our Capital One Cup match at Swindon on Tuesday evening.
