Tottenham have held talks with Eredivisie top scorer Vincent Janssen after AZ Alkmaar gave him permission to speak to Spurs, sources have told Sky SportsNews HQ.

It is understood the 21-year-old spent Tuesday in London listening to Tottenham's plans for the future and discussing a potential deal to move to White Hart Lane.

Sources say there has not yet been any discussions between the clubs over a transfer fee, but reports in the Netherlands claim the Eredivisie club are asking for around £12m.

Sky sources reported last week that Spurs head coach Mauricio Pochettino, his assistant Jesus Perez and head of recruitment Paul Mitchell watched Janssen play for the Netherlands against Republic of Ireland in a pre-Euro 2016 warm-up game.

The forward, who was the top scorer in the Eredivisie last season with 27 goals, has been of significant interest to Spurs as well as the Marseille striker Michy Batshuayi and Basel's Breel Embolo.

Former Ajax and Holland defender Mario Melchiot told Sky Sports News HQ that Janssen has the ability to play in the Premier League, if he can handle the step up.

"He's scored a lot of goals. He holds the ball up really well, knows where the goal is," he said.

"He's strong enough to play in the Premier League. I don't want to say he's a like-for-like with Harry Kane, because Kane has already shown everyone how to do it.

"Vincent deserves credit for scoring so many goals in Holland but we've seen in the Premier League it won't be a walk in the park for him. Technically, he should be able to compete, so now it's just whether he can handle the pressure and expectation."

Janssen only made his Netherlands debut in March, and has scored three goals in five international appearances, including the equaliser from the penalty spot against England at Wembley.

Tottenham have had a bid for Vincent Janssen turned down, according to his Dutch club AZ Alkmaar.

The Dutch international striker was given permission to talk to Spurs earlier this month and he spent a day in London listening to Mauricio Pochettino's vision, with German side Wolfsburg also understood to be keen on the 22-year-old, who was Eridivisie's top scorer last season.

However, Spurs remain the only club to have made a concrete bid, although it was too low for Alkmaar to consider selling according to the club's technical director Max Huiberts.

"The difference between the offer and the price we demand was too big," he told De Telegraaf.

"But Spurs have made the only official bid. I've read a lot of speculation and been telephoned by other clubs but no one else has made any concrete offer."

Reports in the Netherlands claim Alkmaar want around £16m for Janssen, who scored against England in his second international game at Wembley in March and now has three goals in five appearances for his country.

Spurs made their first signing of the season on Thursday with the capture of midfielder Victor Wanyama from Southampton.

JANSSEN DEAL UPDATE

Tottenham Hotspur are hopeful of concluding a deal for striker Vincent Janssen this week and also have Georginio Wijnaldum among their targets, according to The Telegraph.

Sky sources reported last month that the 21-year-old Janssen held talks with Spurs in London after AZ Alkmaar gave permission, but a fee has not been agreed.

Vincent Janssen: Tottenham set to sign Netherlands striker

Tottenham are set to complete a £17m deal for Netherlands striker Vincent Janssen from AZ Alkmaar this week.

The 22-year-old arrived in London on Sunday for a medical.

Janssen got 27 league goals in his first campaign in the Dutch top flight last season and scored a penalty on his international debut in March - a 2-1 win over England.

Janssen will be the Premier League club's second summer signing after Southampton midfielder Victor Wanyama.

French champions Paris St-Germain and German club Wolfsburg were also reported to be interested in signing Janssen.
