Manchester United bid for Everton players a 'waste of time'



Everton manager Roberto Martinez says Manchester United's £28m joint bid for Marouane Fellaini and Leighton Baines is a "waste of time".

United's offer of £16m for Fellaini and £12m for Baines was called "derisory and insulting" by Everton on Monday.
Former Toffees boss David Moyes is keen to bring the pair to Old Trafford, but Martinez wants an end to speculation.
"It's been well documented what happened. And it was all a little bit of a waste of time," Martinez said.

"That is time I don't want the players to waste. I won't come out now and carry on talking about the speculation."

Martinez gave his view on Tuesday, saying: "It's been well documented what happened with the transfer speculation.
"That's been dealt with and it was all a little bit of a waste of time, time I don't want the players to waste.

"I'm not a big believer in having the window open while the games are starting. I think the start of the season was important for us at Norwich and I won't come out now and carry on talking about the speculation.
"I think, as a football club, we will always keep our fans informed. When there is something to tell our fans we will do that, they'll be the first ones to know if there are any players coming in or any players going out."

Manchester United's David Moyes will turn up the heat on previous employers Everton with an improved £35million combined bid for Marouane Fellaini and Leighton Baines.

Moyes' Goodison successor, Roberto Martinez, claims the champions' pursuit is a waste of time.

But the Old Trafford giants intend to test Everton's determination to keep the pair and increase that "derisory and insulting" opening offer.

The next offer will rate Belgian midfielder Fellaini at £20m - still less than the value of his now-expired release clause - and England left-back Baines at £15m.

Moyes, who has struck out on the transfer front so far this summer since taking over from the retired Sir Alex Ferguson, is determined to land two of his Goodison old boys - aware that the Toffees need to sell to buy.

Roberto Martinez says Everton have not received any fresh bids for the likes of Marounane Fellaini and Leighton Baines.

Manchester United saw a joint-bid for the Toffees pair knocked back earlier in the week, with former Goodison Park boss David Moyes rebuffed in his efforts to secure the services of players he knows well.

United's offer, believed to be in the region of £28million, was branded 'derisory', 'insulting' and 'a waste of time' by the Everton board and Toffees boss Martinez.

They hope the matter has now been brought to a close, with everything having gone 'quiet' on the transfer front.

Martinez is hoping to avoid another unsettling approach before the summer window closes, and the Spaniard has called on the relevant authorities to take action in order to prevent similar situations from arising in the future.

Asked if there had been any further movement on the transfer side of things at Goodison, Martinez said: "Everything has been quiet in that front.

"Everything has been as we have informed our fans. I think that is the way we are going to deal with the window now.

"We are still trying to be as strong as we can. If there is anything we need to inform our fans, we will do. But now the focus has to be the games.

"I have said it time after time, it's time for the football authorities to look into the situation.

"I think the transfer window is getting out of hand and really affecting the values of the league. I think it is affecting the human side of the players in a very, very unfair manner.

"It's about time that we stopped the window or we stopped the official games in the middle of the window."

United boss David Moyes saw a £28million joint approach turned down by his former employers and described as "derisory" earlier in the week.

But Martinez feels the players themselves have acted properly despite the speculation surrounding their futures.

"I couldn't be prouder of their professionalism and the way they have been behaving," he said.

"They are two great assets of the football club. I think they realise what they have done in the past and they are very respectful towards that.
"In the same manner, the way we have dealt with things is very transparent, very clear. We always communicate whatever is going on with the players.

"They understand as well that the start of the season is a vital time for us. The only worry now is to prepare for the games and be as right as they can on the pitch.

"That has been important for the group. Football is a team sport and the behaviour of every player really matters. They have been a real example towards that."

Marouane Fellaini wants to quit Everton for Manchester United before his price tag gets even higher next year.
The Belgium midfielder is currently valued at more than £23million by Everton, who rejected a joint bid for Fellaini and Leighton Baines of £28m at the start of the week.
With Everton unwilling to sell to their old manager David Moyes, United face a fight to land their first major transfer of the summer.



However, Sportsmail understands that Fellaini  is keen to be given his chance at a really top club before next summer’s World Cup has a potential impact on his value.
Belgium are expected to qualify for next summer’s tournament and a talented team including Barclays Premier League stars Fellaini, Eden Hazard and Vincent Kompany
are already being tipped to do well.
Fellaini fears that a successful summer could push his price tag up even higher and that it would be best for his career if he left Goodison Park this time round.
The 25-year-old has been at Everton for five years and feels he has given the club good service. He doesn’t want to make things difficult for new Everton manager Roberto Martinez
and at this stage it is unlikely that there will be a formal transfer request.
