Stephane Sessegnon is canned at Sunderland over drink-driving charge STEPHANE SESSEGNON has been axed by Paolo Di Canio after being charged with drink-driving.

The Benin international was stopped by police in Newcastle city centre on Tuesday night just as his Sunderland team-mates were kicking off against MK Dons at the Stadium of Light.While Di Canio won't comment on Sessegnon’s alleged offence, he feels badly let down by the player’s decision not to watch the Capital One Cup tie, which Sunderland won 4-2.The striker was not ordered to attend but his manager believes that if he did not want to be at the game, he should have been at home with his family
rather than being spotted in Newcastle city centre, just a few hundred yards from St James’ Park.Sessegnon had been rested for that game and been pencilled in to return for the trip to Crystal Palace tomorrow – but Di Canio has instead told him he won’t be travelling.

The African has struggled for form so far this term, being substituted in both Premier League games but his attitude had recently been praised by the Italian.Despite being dropped, there could still be a way back for Sessegnon, with Di Canio last night keen to stress he is willing to give players a second chance.Phil Bardsley has been out in the cold since falling out with his manager last May but Sessegnon could yet find his way back into his boss’ good books.Di Canio said: “I will judge each case on its merits and if a footballer says he is really sorry and you think he means it, then yes, there is a second chance.“If you arrive late for training and are fined and then become more professional, then there is a way back.“But if you don’t even think you are doing wrong and say sorry without really meaning it, that is different.”
