Newcastle could be about the finalise their first signing of the summer after Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas confirmed that a deal has been agreed over the
transfer of striker Bafetimbi Gomis.

The Magpies are the only Premier League side yet to add to their senior squad, but it seems that could be about to change after the club had a bid accepted by the Ligue 1 club, believed to be around £9m.

The Tyneside club have had a turbulent summer with the return of Joe Kinnear as director of football coinciding with managing director Derek Llambias’ resignation, which was then followed by a dispute with striker Papiss Cisse over the new main kit sponsor Wonga.

Having avoided relegation last season, owner Mike Ashley wants a vast improvement this time round, but the lack of transfer activity had some Magpies fans worried that there wouldn’t be any new signings this summer.

However, Aulas told French paper Le Journal du Dimanche: "We agreed on Newcastle's offer. The club (Newcastle) has come to accept the player's salary claims.

"The deal is now subject to an agreement over the agents fees," he added.

"I understand there's a problem over the amount and the payment of the fees ... Hopefully, it would be settled within the next 24 or 48 hours."

Newcastle were also linked with a move for Aston Villa striker Darren Bent,although Fulham now seem favourites for his signature after lodging an improved third bid for the 29-year-old.

They could also still take Queens Park Rangers striker Loic Remy on a season-long loan, with manager Alan Pardew keen on adding to his attacking options.

QPR are eager to get Remy off the wage bill for at least a season as they attempt to return to the Premier League at the first time of asking, but Newcastle officials are reluctant to cover his 70,000-a-week wages in full and are looking for the west London club to pay a share of the salary.

NEWCASTLE UNITED have opened talks with Bafetimbi Gomis after turning to the France international in an attempt to address their striker shortage.

With Aston Villa refusing to lower their £8m valuation of Darren Bent, Magpies officials are hoping to conclude a swift deal for Gomis before Alan Pardew and his players return from a two-game tour of Portugal in the middle of next week.

A fee of around £4m is understood to have been agreed with Lyon officials, and the French club’s chairman, Jean-Michal Aulas, has granted permission to speak to Gomis and his representatives.

Joe Kinnear is hoping that United make a breakthrough in the transfer market this week after he sanctioned the official bid for Lyon ace Gomis following dialogue with both Alan Pardew and owner Mike Ashley

But supporter unrest on Tyneside is continuing to grow with the Magpies now lagging behind most of their Premier League rivals on the recruitment front.

United are yet to talk to Gomis or his representatives about wages but remain hopeful they can make progress with the 27-year-old over the next couple of days.

Bafetimbi Gomis is moving closer to a summer transfer but Lyon are determined not to let their star striker leave on the cheap.

Newcastle United are hoping to exploit the fact the 27-year-old is into the last 12 months of his contract to sign him at a much-reduced price. But Lyon hope to play on interest from a number of other clubs to extract as much money as possible for the France international.

Gomis seeing out his contract appears increasingly unlikely after he failed to appear at a meeting to discuss his future yesterday. President Jean-Michel Aulas told the French media Gomis had not shown for the talks, despite having been told to in a hand-delivered letter,

But French sports newspaper L’Equipe are reporting that Lyon hope to sell Gomis for a fee of £8.6m, rising to £10.3m, whereas Newcastle have lodged an opening offer of £4.3m-£5.2m.

Although they will lose Gomis for free next summer if a deal cannot be struck, the Ligue 1 side probably think they are in a strong bargaining position. Newcastle manager Alan Pardew has been applying the pressure on new director of football Joe Kinnear by making it known he wants two strikers this summer. He has confirmed Gomis is on his list of targets, along with Loic Remy and Darren Bent, who may join on loan so that Aston Villa can get a large portion of his wages off their bill, without Newcastle having to pay them all.

Newcastle have already had to cross Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang off their list after he joined Borussia Dortmund.

Kinnear is under increasing pressure from inside and outside the club because as yet they are the only Premier League side yet to sign a senior player.

Wages could also be a problem with Gomis, with the striker demanding around £60,000 a week.

Aulas said earlier in the week that “at least three” clubs had expressed an interest. He confirmed Newcastle were one, but at that stage they had not made an offer.

Rubin Kazan and Swansea City both showed an interest in Gomis in January, while Marseille and Fulham are thought to have done so this time.

Newcastle United were today waiting for a repsonse from Lyon after increasing their bid for Bafetimbi Gomis to £6.9million.

United had been quoted £8.6million yesterday after an initial bid of around £6million had been rejected for the French international.

Gomis has since gone AWOL from Lyon and is understood to be forcing a move to Tyneside, with Newcastle his preferred choice.

United chief Alan Pardew had been confident of closing in on at least one deal over the weekend.
