Dan Gosling will take a “significant” pay cut to leave Newcastle United and join Crystal Palace. The midfielder feels he has no choice but to quit the Magpies after being unable to break into Alan Pardew’s first-team squad.
Personal terms and conditions have been agreed between Gosling and Palace boss Ian Holloway. And Palace were hoping to get approval of a bid around the 1million mark today from the Magpies.Gosling’s departure would be the second sale in less than a week after new director of football Joe Kinnear sanctioned the exit of popular utility man James Perch. Gosling’s agent and former Liverpool and Middlesbrough star David Hodgson told the Chronicle: “Dan doesn’t feel comfortable about picking up his wage packet and not being able to play first-team football.
“
He is taking a significant wage cut to go to Crystal Palace. He just needs to play football.“Dan knows what hard-working people they are in the North East and doesn’t want to come in and take money to just train or play for the reserves.”
Gosling, who has tried hard to overcome injuries and win a place in the team of Pardew, feels the time has come to move on.
Hodgson added: “When Dan first arrived he was recovering from a cruciate injury.
“He signed for Chris Hughton.
“And then Alan came in and brought in his own players.
“That made it even harder for Dan to win his place and with so many midfielders at the club, it is going to be difficult for him to get into the team again.
“He’s disappointed to leave Newcastle but at 23 he needs football.
“Newcastle United have been superb about the whole thing, but as I say it is all about playing for Dan.”
Gosling’s move to the Eagles would see him team up with Holloway for the second time in his career. Holloway was Plymouth Argyle manager when Gosling came to his attention as a raw teenager and long before his switch toEverton.
Hodgson says: “Ian Holloway set him on his way in football.
“He was at Plymouth as a 16-year-old and was a great influence.
“He went on to do well at Everton and with England so for Dan it is the perfect outcome.”
