Wayne Rooney left out of Man Utd squad for FC Midtjylland

Wayne Rooney has been left out of the Manchester United squad for Thursday night’s Europa League match against FC Midtjylland in Denmark.

The England captain stayed behind as his team-mates made the trip and that means Anthony Martial is likely to start up front with Will Keane offering cover off the bench.

"Wayne Rooney is a notable absentee from the flight and the manager is expected to confirm why his captain has not made the trip during his pre-match press conference at 1700 GMT," said a statement on United's website.

Matteo Darmian is also not involved, as expected, after dislocating his shoulder during the 2-1 defeat against Sunderland at the weekend.

Marouane Fellaini has again been left out of the squad after not featuring on Saturday.

Donald Love is in the squad after making his first-team debut against the Black Cats while Regan Poole, Joe Riley and James Weir also make the trip.

Luke Shaw, Marcos Rojo, Phil Jones, Guillermo Varela, Antonio Valencia, Ashley Young, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Adnan Januzaj remain on the sidelines through injury.

Louis van Gaal admitted after losing to Sunderland that United's hopes of finishing in the top four of the Premier League appear bleak. That places added importance on the Europa League as winning the competition offers a route into next season's Champions League.

Wayne Rooney fears he is out for up to six week with a knee injury.

Manchester United are concerned the England captain will be out until the end of next month in a massive blow for club and country.

Rooney did not travel with the rest of the United squad for the Europa League tie at Midtjylland tomorrow night.

England boss Roy Hodgson and the FA will be desperate to know the full extent of the problem.

Rooney did not appear to suffer the injury during Saturday’s defeat at Sunderland and must have done it subsequently in training.

England have friendlies next month with Germany and Holland but that will not be the biggest concern for Hodgson.

Hodgson will be worried that Rooney has enough time to get his full fitness and sharpness back ahead of the Euros.

United will be equally concerned that Rooney is one of their best hopes of getting them back into the top four and also winning some silverware as they are still in Europe and the FA Cup.

Rooney suffered a metatarsal injury before the 2006 World Cup and struggled to get his fitness back in time for the tournament.

England will be hoping that Rooney is not left in the same situation again this time around.

Manchester United and England captain Wayne Rooney has reportedly been ruled out be out for up to six weeks with a knee injury.

Rooney's absence will be a huge blow for club and country and is likely to see him miss 19 matches in total.
