It really is fantastic to be back, Wigan will always have a big place in my heart."

With only hours left of the transfer window, the club are delighted to confirm that Austria international and former fans favourite Paul Scharner has signed back at the DW Stadium from Hamburg SV until the end of the season.
He becomes the 4th signing this January, following Roger Espinoza, Angelo Henriquez and Joel Robles.
The 32 year-old played under Roberto Martinez in his final season at the club in 2009-10 and the manager is happy to welcome him back.
Paul is very versatile and can play in different positions but he comes back in his second spell at Wigan Athletic to master his role at centre half.
His experience will be a huge asset going into the last third of the campaign and he knows our football club inside out the same way that we know Paul and his professionalism down to detail.
He is ready for the challenge and to help the team in an area where we have suffered a few injuries and we are slightly light in numbers especially at this moment of the season, facing the vital moments of two competitions.
Only Emmerson Boyce (182) and Maynor Figueroa (169) have surpassed the 145 Premier League games Scharner has played for Latics, and his performances in that time always made him a firm favourite.
However, it was his flamboyance off the field – who could ever forget the blue and white hair? – that also endeared him to supporters during his four and a half years at the club.
Originally signed from Brann in Norway in January 2005, he scored on his debut, in the Carling Cup semi-final at home to Arsenal. His league debut came, ironically as it turned out, against the side he went on to join, West Bromwich Albion. He played 62 times for The Baggies before moving to the Bundesliga last summer, where after an early injury, he has not managed to establish himself in the team as expected.
Scharner himself said: “It really is fantastic to be back. Wigan will always have a big place in my heart, so to be asked to come back and help the team now is something really special for me.”
Paul's shirt number for his return to the Club will be 33.
