Chelsea news: Guus Hiddink leaves the door open to Stamford Bridge returnWith uncertainty surrounding Jose Mourinho's future, former interim manager says: 'Top-class football will always be attractive
Guus Hiddink has left the door open to a return to Chelsea for a second spell as interim manager.Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is facing one of the toughest decisions of his Stamford Bridge reign over the future of manager Jose Mourinho.
Following Tuesday night’s Capital One Cup defeat at Stoke City, Mourinho will be fighting to save his job if Chelsea lose in the Premier League against Liverpool on Saturday.
Abramovich has backed Mourinho through Chelsea’s slump, but will be forced to act if the club fall further behind in the race for a Champions League place.
Part of the dilemma for Abramovich, however, is who he would immediately replace Mourinho with as his first-choice successors, Pep Guardiola and Diego Simeone, would not be available until the summer. As revealed by Telegraph Sport on Tuesday,
Carlo Ancelotti would not be interested in a caretaker role at Chelsea, but it seems Hiddink, who fulfilled the same position in 2009 and won the FA Cup, would be open to a return of any sorts.
Hiddink is a free agent after being sacked by Holland in June and indicated that he would be interested in re-joining Chelsea.“Top-class football will always be attractive,” said 68-year-old Hiddink. “Lately there have been offers coming my way, but there hasn't been anything I wanted to take up straight away. We’ll see – we’ll have to wait.”
Other than working for Abramovich in a temporary role at Chelsea, Hiddink also managed the Russian national team and formed a close allegiance with the billionaire.
