West Ham's Payet facing three months out


West Ham have been dealt a massive injury blow with the news Dimitri Payet could be ruled out for three months.

The French midfielder has been a major factor in West Ham's fine start to the season following his £10.7million summer move from Marseille.



But Payet, who has hit five goals in 14 appearances, suffered an ankle injury after a challenge from James McCarthy in the 1-1 draw against Everton on Saturday.

And Jack Sullivan, the son of Hammers co-owner David Sullivan, revealed the extent of the 28-year-old's injury on Twitter.

He wrote: "Sadly Payet will be out for about 3 months! Huge miss for the team. How the Everton player didn't get sent off amazes me!!"

Ecuador forward Enner Valencia was also injured against the Toffees with the club awaiting the results of a scan on his ankle problem.

Dimitri Payet has learned he does not need surgery on the ankle injury which will sideline him for the next three months.

The France international and his West Ham team-mate Enner Valencia - who is also out with the same problem - saw specialists on Monday morning.

Both players were hurt in a 1-1 draw with Everton on November 7 and the London club said in a statement they expect Valencia to be fit again by the start of 2016.

Payet - a scorer of five goals for the Upton Park side since his summer move from Marseille - is facing a longer spell out of action.

While the length of time he is expected to be out has not changed, he has at least been cleared to start his rehabilitation immediately rather than been told he must wait for surgery first.

Payet has already vowed to come back stronger from his setback after he suffered his injury in a tackle with James McCarthy.

A statement on whufc.com said: "Valencia was advised that he needs an extended rehabilitation period, which has now begun.

"It is expected that he will be fully recovered by the beginning of the New Year.

"Payet also attended an appointment with a specialist on Monday morning and, along with the club's medical team, he was advised he does not need an operation.

"He will therefore start his rehabilitation programme immediately, but is still expected to be unavailable for selection for three months."

Dimitri Payet: West Ham midfielder might be fit for Liverpool

West Ham midfielder Dimitri Payet could make his first-team return against Liverpool on 2 January, according to manager Slaven Bilic.
The summer signing, 28, impressed with his early displays and scored five goals before sustaining an ankle injury in November which was expected to keep him out until February.
"He's ahead of schedule," Bilic said.
"Payet is training with the fitness coaches and he might be involved in the Liverpool game, which is a big boost."
Bilic added: "His ankle is very good - it is stable - so it is great news if it goes like this."
France international Payet signed for £10.7m from Marseille in June.
