Asamoah returns to SchalkeJuly 16, 2013
FC Schalke 04 legend Gerald Asamoah has returned to the Royal Blues, the club revealed during a press conference on Tuesday.Asamoah, 34, will join Schalke as a stand-by player for their reserve team as well as taking over PR and adviser duties.
He originally joined Schalke from Hannover in 1999 and through his 11 years at the club had become a club legend and cult figure for the fans. This summer, Asamoah ended his professional career after two short stints at FC St. Pauli and SpVgg Greuther Furth.
"I am delighted to be back," Asamoah told the media. He was also work in Schalke’s marketing department and be part of a "team of excellence" that also includes 1990 World Cup winner Olaf Thon and a yet to be appointed third former Schalke player.
"We had a vacant attacker spot in our reserves and Gerald was able to help us out," Schalke sporting director Horst Heldt joked.
"With our vice-championship in 2001 and our back-to-back DFB Pokal wins in 2001 and 2002 he has witnessed the big success of our recent club history," Schalke CEO Clemens Tonnies added. "With his charm Gerald will be able to positively represent our club, especially in the ever growing marketing department."
