Fabricio Coloccini: Newcastle contest defender's red card



Newcastle United have appealed to the Football Association over the red card given to Fabricio Coloccini during Sunday's 3-0 defeat by Sunderland.
The 33-year-old was sent off just before half-time for denying Steven Fletcher a clear goalscoring opportunity, resulting in a penalty.
A Regulatory Commission will hear the appeal on Tuesday afternoon.
If the dismissal stands, the defender will miss Newcastle's home game with Stoke on Saturday.
Coloccini's dismissal was a key moment in Sunday's derby - the sixth in succession that Sunderland have won against their local rivals.
His foul allowed Adam Johnson to open the scoring from the spot before further goals from Billy Jones and Fletcher.
The defeat left Newcastle 19th in the Premier League, level on six points with Sunderland and two behind Bournemouth in 17th.

Newcastle United have won their appeal against Fabricio Coloccini's red card in Sunday's 3-0 defeat by Sunderland.
The 33-year-old defender was sent off for a challenge on Steven Fletcher which resulted in a penalty.
Coloccini will not now have to serve a one-match ban and is available for the game with Stoke on Saturday.
However, the Football Association has charged Newcastle with "failing to control their players in relation to their reaction" to the decision.
The club have until 18:00 GMT on Friday to respond to the charge.
Coloccini's dismissal was a key moment in Sunday's derby - the sixth in succession that Sunderland have won against their local rivals.
His foul allowed Adam Johnson to open the scoring from the spot before further goals from Billy Jones and Fletcher.
"An Independent Regulatory Commission found that the match referee had made an obvious error in dismissing the Newcastle United defender for denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity," said an FA statement.
The defeat left Newcastle 19th in the Premier League, level on six points with Sunderland and two behind Bournemouth in 17th.

NEWCASTLE United are set to launch another appeal against the Football Association - despite the fact their captain Fabricio Coloccini has been cleared to play this weekend.

United won an appeal on Tuesday against Coloccini's first-half red card against Sunderland - only for the club to be charged for the reaction of their players to that particular incident.

An independent commission decided rookie referee Robert Madley should not have sent Coloccini off during the Tyne-Wear derby at the Stadium of Light. The Toon skipper's one-match ban has been overturned and he can now play in their home game against Stoke this Saturday.

The FA hearing concluded Madley got it wrong when he sent off the Argentinian for barging into Sunderland's Steven Fletcher. Toon players reacted furiously to the red card and manager Steve McClaren confronted Madley as he walked off the pitch at half-time.

After the final whistle, an angry McClaren claimed the 30-year-old match official was too inexperienced to take charge of such a high-octane clash.

But Newcastle chiefs were baffled that they are once again in the dock even though their initial appeal has been upheld. Newcastle face a fine if they are found guilty of failing to control their players.
