Newcastle fear Tim Krul could miss rest of the season after suffering knee ligament injury with Holland Newcastle fear Tim Krul could have suffered a season-wrecking knee injury that leaves Steve McClaren’s team with a keeper crisis. The Dutch ace landed badly while playing for Holland against Kazakhstan on Saturday, damaging knee ligaments. There are fears in the Dutch camp that Krul could be ruled out for as long as eight months.
Newcastle will learn in the next couple of days whether that worst case scenario is likely, after the swelling goes down and he has scans on Tyneside.
But they are braced for the worst, and are frustrated that the game was played on the Astana Arena’s artificial pitch, in icy conditions.Newcastle will have Rob Elliot in goal for the visit of Norwich next week and the North East derby against Sunderland in a fortnight. They are also set to recall Freddie Woodman from Crawley Town of League Two. The 18-year-old has made 11 appearances for Crawley. United’s other young keeper, Karl Darlow, has an ankle injury.
Holland boss Danny Blind admitted Krul had suffered a “bad injury”
Blind added: “Tim landed the wrong way. It could be that it was because of the artificial turf, but I dare not say.”
Krul only played because No1 Jasper Cillessen was injured in the warm-up.
Krul tweeted: “Gutted to come off with an injury tonight. Thanks for all the get well wishes. I will know more about the extent of the injury after scans.”
