Sunderland 1-4 Manchester City: Pellegrini's men pummel hapless Black Cats

By Sam Drury
Last Updated: 22/09/15 11:45pm

First half goals from Sergio Aguero, Kevin De Bruyne and Raheem Sterling helped Manchester City to a comprehensive Capital One Cup third round win at Sunderland.

The Black Cats made a bright start with Fabio Borini twice going close before City sprang into action.

They took the lead from the penalty spot after Patrick van Aanholt clumsily brought down Jesus Navas. Aguero stepped up and sent Vito Mannone the wrong way and from there, City never looked back.

De Bruyne doubled their lead soon after, beating Mannone at his near post having been put through by Sterling and the former Liverpool man was heavily involved in the next two Blues goals.

First, he saw his shot come back off the post, hit Mannone and trickle over the line before finishing confidently into the far corner for City's fourth.

Ola Toivonen pulled one back for Sunderland late on but it was far too little, too late for Dick Advocaat's beleaguered side.

It was a highly impressive response from Manchester City following their defeat to West Ham at the weekend as Manuel Pellegrini named a near full strength side, Willy Caballero replacing Joe Hart in goal and Fernando coming in for Fernandinho the only notable changes.

However, while the visitors' quality was evident for long spells, it was Sunderland errors that allowed them to take control of the game in the first instance.

Van Aanholt lost his bearings before bundling over Navas on the right side of the area. It was a clear penalty and Aguero made no mistake from 12 yards.

The second came from a lovely pass from Sterling in between the full-back and the centre-back to find De Bruyne who took on the shot from a tight angle. He hit it well but Mannone will have been disappointed to have been beaten at his near post.

At that point, Sunderland's players seemed to lose their heads as panic took over. A series of sloppy passes and numerous miscontrols prevented them getting out of their half and invited wave after wave of City attack.

The third came from a neat move down the right. Sagna and Navas combined before the latter crossed. It was too near to the keeper but Mannone could only push the low ball out as far as Sterling, eight yards out. The winger's shot hit the post but rebounded off Mannone and into the net. A perfect summation of Sunderland's night.

Sterling made it four when De Bruyne slipped him in down the left channel. The England man kept his composure, opened up his body and side-footed the ball into the far corner.

With the game all but won before the break, City were able to simply go through the motions in the second half.

Sunderland pushed on in search of a goal that could offer them an unlikely route back into the game. However, it took until the final 15 minutes for them to lay a glove on the league leaders.

Borini was played in down the right but his shot was kept out by the legs of Caballero.

Sunderland did eventually get one back as Toivonen headed in DeAndre Yedlin's cross at the near post. It was little comfort to the Sunderland fans who had seen their side so masterfully pulled apart in the opening 45 minutes.

City, meanwhile, progress to the fourth round of the competition they won in 2014.

Leicester City 2-1 West Ham (aet): King's late header preserves Foxes' unbeaten run

Last Updated: 22/09/15 10:46pm

Leicester City beat West Ham United 2-1 after extra time in the Capital One Cup third round thanks to Andy King's last-gasp header at the King Power Stadium.

The game was level after 90 minutes, with Joe Dodoo opening the scoring early on for the home side, before Mauro Zarate levelled matters up just before the half-hour mark.

However, with the tie heading towards penalties, midfielder King rose majestically to head Claudio Ranieri's side into the fourth-round draw, which takes place on Wednesday.

And after making 10 changes from the team that draw 2-2 at Stoke City in the Premier League on Saturday, the Italian will have been delighted at the performance of the players who came in for this encounter.

In particular, Ghana forward Dodoo who gave Leicester the lead after just six minutes on his first home start for the club, with the 20-year-old finishing calmly from 10 yards out after fellow frontman Leonardo Ulloa had caused confusion in the box with a headed flick on.

The visitors, though, responded well to the setback of falling behind so early by soon equalising, although Zarate's strike owed more than a little fortune to a big deflection off Leicester defender Marcin Wasilewski, which wrong-footed veteran goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer in the Foxes goal.

But after the Argentine's goal - his third in three different competitions for the Hammers so far this campaign - it was all Leicester as visiting 'keeper Adrian continued omn his brilliant form between the posts from Saturday at the Etihad.

In particular, Adrian produced one sensational fingertip save to keep out a Ulloa header after an hour, while the Spaniard also showed impressive reflexes to beat away a Christian Fuchs free kick minutes later.

And when the match then moved into extra time, Adrian was again called upon to deny substitutes Riyad Mahrez and Jeffrey Schlupp as the contest moved towards a dreaded penalty shootout.

But that was reckoning without King's late intervention as the Welshman - who also netted a last-gasp winner when these two sides met at the King Power in the Premier League in April, headed Fuchs's inch-perfect left-wing centre high into the back of the net past a for once helpless Adrian as the Foxes maintained their unbeaten start to the season in all competitions.

Aston Villa 1-0 Birmingham: Rudy Gestede settles West Midlands derby

Rudy Gestede headed the only goal of the game as Aston Villa edged through to the fourth round of the League Cup with a derby victory over Birmingham City.
The Benin striker powerfully nodded in left-back Jordan Amavi's left-wing cross from 10 yards just after the hour mark.
Blues had the better of a highly charged first half at Villa Park.
But Villa got on top after the break to earn victory over Gary Rowett's side.
The visitors went closest in the first half through an angled shot from Jacques Maghoma, who also volleyed over when well placed.
And lively teenager Demarai Gray should have done better with a weak chipped free-kick straight at home keeper Brad Guzan. After making two half-time substitutions, Villa broke through 17 minutes into the second half when Amavi swung in a cross and Gestede evaded his marker to place his header low inside Tomasz Kuszczak's right post.
Maghoma had a great chance to level, after being sent through by Gray, but Guzan saved his scuffed effort.
Villa could have won by more, Kuszczak saving spectacularly from Scott Sinclair and Jordan Ayew, whose fellow half-time substitute Jack Grealish was inches away from stealing in at the far post.
Villa's first win in four matches, since beating Notts County in round two, condemned Blues to only their second defeat of the season.

Aston Villa boss Tim Sherwood:

"We came here on a hiding to nothing. I was proud of how we went about it - we tried to get between the lines and they couldn't cope with Jack Grealish. We always want to play fast, flowing football but we can't always do that.
"We've shown we're a flexible team. I want players who I can look in the eye and get what I expect. Tonight is a huge boost. I thought we could have won a lot more comfortably."

Birmingham manager Gary Rowett:

"You're playing against a huge side from the Premier League in a local derby, it's a very difficult game to play in. First half we were the better side, we played very well, had a few chances and moved the ball around very well.
"Jack Grealish changed the game when he came on and we were undone by a moment of quality from Rudy Gestede. That is very difficult to defend against.
"I hope the fans will have seen something positive and will have seen us run Aston Villa very close. I think tactically we more than matched Villa."

Hull 1-0 Swansea: Visitors rue missed chances as David Meyler goal sees Tigers through

Championship side Hull City progressed to the fourth round of the League Cup with a win over top-flight Swansea, as Jake Livermore returned for the Tigers.
England midfielder Livermore had been suspended since May following a positive cocaine test.
He played 69 minutes and was given a rousing reception by the home fans.

David Meyler's close-range finish before the break was enough for Hull to progress, with the visitors missing a host of first-half chances.
Livermore was spared a lengthy ban by the Football Association because of "unique" personal circumstances.
Swansea made 10 changes from Saturday's draw with Everton and had plenty of chances in the opening 45 minutes, but they were made to rue their wastefulness.
Matt Grimes headed over, Gylfi Sigurdsson slid the ball past an empty net and Wayne Routledge missed two chances.
The winner came when Shaun Maloney's header was parried into the path of Meyler, who poked home underneath the crossbar.
Hull were more comfortable after the break although Kyle Bartley hit the post late on for the frustrated visitors.
Hull manager Steve Bruce:
"It was a big night for Jake for obvious reasons and I'm sure he appreciated the support he got from our fans.
"He's had the support of the club from the moment this happened and now he's played his first game he can get back on with his career.
"He's been through a tough time, a really tough time, and it's important now he gets his career back on track."
Swansea boss Garry Monk:
"If you played that game 100 times you'd win 99.
"They scored with pretty much their only chance and we had so many chances it could have been a cricket score in the first half.
"We just didn't take any of them and got hit with a classic sucker punch. We showed a lack of composure which was disappointing."

Fulham 0-1 Stoke: Peter Crouch puts Potters through in Capital One Cup

Stoke survived a late onslaught from Championship Fulham to reach the fourth round of the League Cup.
Peter Crouch fired Stoke ahead with his first goal of the season after combining with Peter Odemwingie.
Ross McCormack came close to equalising for Fulham in the second half but failed to make telling contact with Ben Pringle's cross from three yards out.

Odemwingie was then wasteful from close range before Dan Burn shot against the bar for Fulham late on.
Stoke are yet to win in the Premier League this season but held on to reach the last 16 of the League Cup, with goalkeeper Shay Given clawing out Lasse Vigen Christensen's shot as Fulham finished strongly.
It was Stoke boss Mark Hughes's first win at Craven Cottage since he left the club in 2011.
Fulham boss Kit Symons:
"The goal they scored was very fortuitous.
"There wasn't an awful lot in it but I didn't think we were positive enough and showed them too much respect.
"I thought we were better second half and we ramped it up as it went on and had an abundance of chances at the end but unfortunately we couldn't take one of them. I don't like losing, but if you do, at least we lost having a go."
Stoke boss Mark Hughes:
"Peter Crouch struggled in pre-season, he had an operation that didn't go as planned and set him back. Now he's getting up to speed.
"He's a player that gives us different options. He's a focal point to the team and a technically good player. He will want to play more but he's got a big role to play.
"He is an important player and an important member of the squad."

Preston 2-2 Bournemouth (B'mouth win 3-2 on pens): Cherries progress after shoot-out win

Premier League Bournemouth survived a scare against Preston to reach the League Cup fourth round on penalties.
Shaun MacDonald's looping header gave Bournemouth the lead but substitute Jordan Hugill nodded the Championship side level to force extra time.
The Cherries took the lead again through Marc Pugh's close-range strike before Daniel Johnson levelled from the penalty spot.

Johnson had the decisive penalty saved by Adam Federici in the shootout.
Hugill and Alan Browne also had penalties saved, with home keeper Jordan Pickford denying Dan Gosling, as Bournemouth won the shootout 3-2.
The Lilywhites, who knocked Premier League Watford out in the previous round, were deservedly behind at the break after MacDonald took advantage of some poor defending to open the scoring.
Simon Grayson's men rallied after the break, though, and Hugill got on the end of Greg Cunningham's cross from the left to head a leveller with six minutes left.
Pugh was at the centre of the action in extra time, stabbing home after Josh King's shot was blocked, before Johnson punished his handball from the penalty spot.
Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe:
"Adam Federici is an outstanding goalkeeper and he's made some great saves there that's got us through and the lads have shown great composure to score at the other end,
"He's an outstanding, experienced international goalkeeper who we certainly believe in.
"He's also a great character and brilliant with the lads, even though he's not playing at the moment he's certainly giving competition for places."
Preston boss Simon Grayson:
"They showed a lot of character and worked extremely hard and showed all of the things that we asked of them after the weekend with that second-half performance.
"I'm pleased with them and disappointed to go out but if you're going to lose a game and respond after a disappointing performance that was the way to do it tonight."

Reading 1-2 Everton: Gerard Deulofeu's free-kick sends Premier League side through

Everton survived a scare against Reading as they came from behind to win their League Cup third-round tie.
Championship side Reading took a first-half lead through striker Nick Blackman as he finished a deep Ola John cross.
Ross Barkley volleyed in a low left-foot shot to equalise after the break as the hosts failed to clear a corner.

Gerard Deulofeu completed the comeback shortly after with a free-kick from 25 yards which Ali Al-Habsi could only parry onto the inside of the post.
Reading manager Steve Clarke made eight changes to his starting line-up, but it was the Royals who had the better of the first-half chances as Blackman forced two smart saves out of Joel Robles in the Everton goal.
Robles was again called in to action as Aaron Tshibola struck a fierce right-foot shot and centre-back Jake Cooper was just out of reach of finishing the resulting corner as he slid in at the back post.
But Everton's escape was short-lived as Blackman bundled in at the far post for his seventh goal of the season to give Reading a deserved lead

The hosts continued to frustrate their Premier League opponents after the interval and John went close to doubling the lead as he flashed a shot just over the bar.
But just as Everton looked to be rushing passes, up stepped Barkley with a fiercely struck volley for the equaliser as Al-Habsi was left with little chance to stop the England midfielder's left-foot effort.
He perhaps should have done better to keep out Deulofeu's free-kick soon after as he palmed the ball in off the post.
The Oman international did deny Romelu Lukaku the chance to extend Everton's lead as he raced off his line to block a one-on-one on the edge of the penalty area.
Reading pressed for an equaliser, but speculative efforts from Chris Gunter and substitute Danny Williams were as close as they came.
Reading manager Steve Clarke:
"I'm disappointed. I thought we played really well. First half especially, I thought we were terrific.
"The performance was good. There were a lot of changes. That was my decision to make them, but I don't think they affected the rhythm of the team. They were as good defensively as they were in attack.
"It's fantastic to have all the options available to me. It makes my job difficult which is what I ask the players to do."
Everton manager Roberto Martinez:
"I think Reading started really well and bright. When you get lots of changes you get into a little bit of the unknown. You're not sure how they'll gel as a team, but I think they did that extremely well.
"I'm sure it was a little bit of the unknown for them as well, but I thought they started with a bright tempo, were very brave and played a high line defensively where we couldn't find the extra pass to open them up.
"Gerard Deulofeu was tremendous with his work-rate tonight and we know what he can achieve. Then he comes up with that little bit of magic for the winning goal."

Tottenham 1-2 Arsenal: Mathieu Flamini scores twice in north London derby

Mathieu Flamini scored a superb volley to give Arsenal victory in their League Cup third-round tie at Tottenham.
Flamini slotted the visitors into the lead after Spurs keeper Michel Vorm could only parry an Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain shot back into his area.
Tottenham's Danny Rose had a penalty appeal rejected before the hosts equalised when Calum Chambers scored an own goal from Nacer Chadli's cross.
Midfielder Flamini then volleyed in from 20 yards to secure the win.

Fabulous Flamini

The France midfielder scored two goals in a game for the first time for Arsenal - and could not have picked a better opposition than their fierce north London rivals.
There had been speculation about how much of a role he would play this season having been overtaken by Francis Coquelin in the holding midfield role, and this was his first appearance of the campaign.
"I'm happy for the team and personally," he told Sky Sports. "I've heard many things in the press and I am still here. I don't have any problems with anyone at the club.
"It is never easy when you don't play every game. I had a point to prove."
Kane struggles

Harry Kane remains without a goal for Spurs this season, though he did come close to scoring.
He had an opening in the first half when he controlled the ball on his chest eight yards out but took another touch instead of shooting and the chance was gone.
Kane later led a Spurs counter-attack but could only drag his effort wide from just outside the area,
The England striker did produce an acrobatic volley at the far post following an Andros Townsend corner, but the shot was cleared off the goalline by Kieran Gibbs.

Manchester United 3-0 Ipswich: Wayne Rooney and Anthony Martial on target in comfortable win

Anthony Martial's rich goalscoring form continued as Manchester United eased into the League Cup fourth round with victory at home to Ipswich Town.
Wayne Rooney got his first domestic goal of the season to put United ahead against their Championship opponents, who made 11 changes for the game.
Midfielder Andreas Pereira, 19, scored a spectacular free-kick to double the lead on his first start.

And substitute Martial, also 19, coolly slotted home a third in injury time.
It was the striker's fourth goal in as many matches since his £36m move from Monaco.
Fellow substitute Memphis Depay controlled the ball into his path before the Frenchman stroked beyond Bartosz Bialkowski in the Ipswich goal.
But the goal of the night belonged to Pereira, whose dipping free-kick bent over the Ipswich wall and into the corner.
United face Middlesbrough, who beat fellow Championship side Wolves 3-0 on Tuesday, at home in the next round.

Walsall 1-4 Chelsea: Champions safely through to fourth round

Chelsea eased through to the fourth round of the League Cup with a comfortable win over Walsall.
The Premier League side went ahead when summer signing Kenedy crossed for Ramires to nod home.
Remy doubled their lead with a powerful finish, but Walsall responded quickly when James O'Connor tapped in after Milan Lalkovic's free-kick was parried.
Kenedy's goal ended the League One side's hopes of an upset before Pedro added a fourth from distance.
The scoreline was perhaps harsh on the Saddlers, who competed strongly throughout, but Chelsea never looked in danger of a first League Cup defeat to lower-league opposition since 1989.
It was Brazilian Kenedy, signed from Fluminense, who particularly caught the eye on his first start for the Blues.
The 19-year-old reacted quickly when Walsall keeper Neil Etheridge lost possession to set up compatriot Ramires, and took his goal superbly with a firm strike through Etheridge's legs.
Walsall, who are currently second in the third tier, have now failed to reach the fourth round for the last 18 seasons.
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho: "We were not here to throw away a competition. When you start the season with bad results like we did you cannot lose against a League One team.
"I am always worried with these teams with great belief."
Walsall manager Dean Smith: "The team talk was: 'We're not here to try not to lose, we're here to try and win.'
"They make it very difficult for you and they protect their back four very well. We gave it a go and we're disappointed with the scoreline a little bit. Maybe 4-1 flattered them."

Newcastle 0-1 Sheffield Wednesday: Pressure builds on Steve McClaren

Newcastle's poor start to the season continued as they were knocked out of the League Cup by Championship side Sheffield Wednesday.
Lewis McGugan's shot from outside the box gave victory to Wednesday, who made 10 changes from their previous match.
Newcastle's Moussa Sissoko had clipped the outside of the post before the break.
The result leaves Magpies boss Steve McClaren with just one win from his first eight matches in charge.
The former England manager has just three wins from his last 21 matches, combining results from previous club Derby County.
Those victories came against Wigan, Blackpool and Northampton Town, who Newcastle beat in the second round.
Wednesday were unlucky not to double their lead when hitting the crossbar twice in as many seconds.
Tim Krul tipped Lucas Joao's header onto the woodwork before Sergiu Bus's follow-up crashed over.
Siem de Jong missed two good chances to equalise late on, scuffing one shot wide before volleying over the bar as Wednesday reached the fourth round for the first time in 14 seasons.

Crystal Palace 4-1 Charlton: Dwight Gayle scores hat-trick in win

Dwight Gayle scored a hat-trick as Crystal Palace moved into the League Cup fourth round with a home win over Championship side Charlton Athletic.
Fraizer Campbell put Palace ahead with a low finish just after the break.
Gayle then netted a penalty after Campbell was fouled by Alou Diarra, before Naby Sarr pulled one back.
Diarra was sent off after another foul in the box, with Gayle scoring again from the spot before completing his hat-trick with a header after a corner.

Palace had exited the League Cup to teams from the second or third tier in four of the past five seasons, but this was a potent performance from Alan Pardew's side against the team he managed between 2006 and 2008.
Gayle has not started a Premier League match all season, but this display underlined his value to Palace, who had not scored in either of their previous two games.
Charlton manager Guy Luzon rested key players Ahmed Kashi, Johann Berg Gudmundsson and Tony Watt as his side suffered a third consecutive defeat in all competitions.
The Addicks have not reached the fourth round of the League Cup since the 2006-07 season.

Crystal Palace assistant manager Keith Millen: "It's nice to have your forwards scoring. Dwight and Fraizer looked sharp all night.
"They both looked dangerous so that will give everyone a confidence boost and it's nice to have some competition for the weekend.
"It was a performance that we wanted from the whole team, we had players who needed game time. We want to go as far as we can, we are in the last 16 and it's been a while since we had a cup run."

Charlton manager Guy Luzon: "We organised well in the first half, especially with a young team.
"But the first penalty was harsh and then after the second, at 3-1 with 10 players, it's finished. I don't know about the sending-off, I was too far away from the situation.
"We have a lot of injuries and in our situation we had to use some young players. I wanted to pick my strongest team but I didn't have any choice."
