Lionel Messi is a doubt for Barcelona's Champions League match against Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday after he was injured in the early stages of Saturday's La Liga clash with Las Palmas.

Messi, who was captaining Barca with Andres Iniesta on the bench, asked to be substituted in the eighth minute after hurting his left knee in the Nou Camp contest.

The Argentina star went down after a clash of legs with Daniel Castellano in the third minute.

Following medical attention, he went back on, but two minutes later asked to be replaced with Munir El Haddadi coming on.

Barca were aiming to bounce back from their 4-1 mauling by Celta Vigo on Wednesday against newly-promoted Las Palmas.

They started the day with 12 points from five games, a point behind Real Madrid, Celta Vigo and Villarreal who are in a three-way tie for first place.

Messi out for 3 weeks 'at least' with damaged ligament



Leo Messi faces several weeks on the sidelines after suffering a knee injury in today’s game against Las Palmas.

The Barça striker’s left leg was caught by defender Pedro Bigas as he shot on goal from close range three minutes into the match; and although he returned to the action after receiving treatment on the sidelines, he asked to be taken off minutes later.

Messi was rushed to the nearby Cruz Blanca clinic to have his left knee examined and was seen limping as he left the clinic to be taken home.

Initial reports claim that Messi has suffered some kind of damage to the lateral internal ligament in his left knee, although at this stage, it is not known whether it is a sprain or a tear.

If the injury is just a tweak, Messi will be sidelined for approximately three weeks. If there is a tear, he will face a longer stretch in the casualty room – six weeks at least.

Barcelona captain Andres Iniesta out with hamstring injury



Barca, who are already missing Lionel Mess, Rafinha, Claudio Bravo, Adriano and Thomas Vermaelen through injury, have since confirmed the midfielder has suffered a hamstring problem.

"FC Barcelona have released the diagnosis of the injury suffered by Andres Iniesta during the game against Bayer Leverkusen in which he had to leave the field in the 60th minute," Barca said on their website.

"As such, the medical release states that the Barça midfielder has a hamstring injury in his right leg. His recovery will dictate his return to training."

The 31-year-old is almost certain to miss the weekend trip to Sevilla along with Spain's Euro 2016 double-header with Luxembourg and Ukraine.
