Man Utd 2-1 Wolfsburg: Juan Mata stars as United defeat stubborn Wolfsburg

Premier League leaders Manchester United earned their first win of the Champions League group stage as they came from behind to beat Wolfsburg.
With Chelsea and Arsenal losing in the competition on Tuesday, United were in danger of going the same way when Daniel Caligiuri finished off a six-pass move for the opener.
But Juan Mata levelled from the spot, after Caligiuri handled.
Mata then flicked through for Chris Smalling to slide in the winner.
The Bundesliga side went close to an equaliser when former Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner saw a close-range shot hit Wayne Rooney.
All four teams in Group B are now on three points after CSKA Moscow beat United's opening-day conquerors PSV Eindhoven in Russia.

Are United realistic Champions League winners?

Manager Louis van Gaal was adamant United have a "realistic" chance of winning the competition, when asked earlier this week.
They last won the Champions League in 2008 and lost in the final in 2009 and 2011, while Van Gaal won the competition with Ajax in 1995.
The way United were cut open for Wolfsburg's opener - with stand-in right-back Antonio Valencia playing Caligiuri onside - was not the defending of champions.
But the hosts showed plenty of quality from thereon in as they took the game to their counter-attacking opponents, creating numerous good chances and deservedly turning the match around.
Against a Wolfsburg side packed with ability, United grew nervy late on and will know they will have to see out games better if they are to go deep into this competition.

A new Old Trafford hero?

Anthony Martial failed to score in his seven Champions League matches for Monaco last season.
But there was no lack of confidence on show as the 19-year-old's direct style and skill posed Wolfsburg's defence problems throughout.
The £36m summer signing had scored four goals in his first five matches for United, and he went close with a couple of individual efforts in the opening half against Wolfsburg.
He also created a golden opportunity for Rooney - running to the byeline and crossing low for the England striker to prod over - before being denied by goalkeeper Diego Benaglio after another direct run late on.
Experience can prove crucial

A few eyebrows were raised when Van Gaal signed Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger in summer, but the 31-year-old's experience could be key for a relatively young United side.
The German was always available to take possession and had more touches and made more passes than any other player on the field before he was substituted on 70 minutes.
It was no coincidence that without the calming influence of Schweinsteiger in the middle, Wolfsburg grew into the game in the last 20 minutes as United struggled to keep the ball.

Man of the match: Chris Smalling

What the manager said

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal: "It was very difficult because they scored so early. Then we did very well, we created a lot of chances. We don't finish it and it was a lucky penalty I think.
"Of course it is a penalty but there are some referees not whistling for that. We have created many more chances - Rooney and Depay could have scored and you finish the game.
"Then we score and after that it was suffering. A lot of players are very tired, but we didn't give much away. How many chances have we given away? Maybe one."

The stats you need to know

  • Juan Mata scored his first Champions League goal since December 2012
  • Mata has been involved in 14 goals (8 scored, 5 assisted) in his past 21 games for Manchester United.
  • United have not kept a clean sheet at home in their past six home games against German sides.
  • Wolfsburg have only failed to score once in eight Champions League group games.
  • Bayern Munich were the last German team to beat Manchester Utd at Old Trafford in the Champions League. It was in April 2001.

Borussia Monchengladbach 1-2 Man City: Sergio Aguero's last-gasp spot-kick gives visitors vital win

Sergio Aguero's last-minute penalty helped Manchester City fight back to earn a crucial Champions League win at German side Borussia Monchengladbach.
Aguero calmly slotted into the corner as City bounced back from defeat by Juventus in their opening Group D tie.
City keeper Joe Hart saved a first-half penalty from Raffael but was powerless to stop Lars Stindl precisely side-footing in the opener from 15 yards.
Defender Nicolas Otamendi volleyed in the equaliser before Aguero struck.
City remain third in Group D, level on three points with Spanish side Sevilla, but three adrift of Juventus.
The Italian champions, who won 2-1 at Etihad Stadium earlier this month, have maximum points after beating Sevilla 2-0 in Turin.

Hart key to City's success

Aguero's late winner - after the Argentine was tripped by Monchengladbach's Fabian Johnson - make the early standings look much healthier for a City side aiming to progress past the Champions League last 16 for the first time.
But had it not been for an impressive display by returning goalkeeper Hart, Manuel Pellegrini's side might not have found themselves in the position to be pushing for a late winner.
Hart returned to the side after a back injury kept him on the bench for Saturday's defeat at Tottenham - where replacement Willy Caballero was criticised for his part in two of the home side's four goals.
And Hart produced a commanding display in Germany to show why he is so integral to his side's ambitions.
As well as stopping Raffael's first-half penalty, the 28-year-old spread himself to deny the Brazilian and also stopped Patrick Herrmann when sloppy defending allowed the pair to burst through on his goal.

City's fab four unveiled

Manchester City fans finally saw their £116m forward line of Sergio Aguero, Raheem Sterling, David Silva and Kevin de Bruyne together for the first time.
But although they contributed significantly to the visitors hogging 65.4% of the possession in Germany, the quartet struggled to find their fluency in the final third of the field.
Aguero, who has only managed one goal from open play this season, wasted an excellent chance inside the opening five minutes, sliding Sterling's low cross from the left against the legs of home keeper Yann Sommer.
The Argentina forward, who had eight shots - more than any other player - also dragged two first-half efforts wide.
But he kept his cool when it mattered to score his 15th goal in his last 15 Champions League starts for City.

Champion form from City?

City have won two Premier League titles in recent seasons, but have famously struggled to find the right formula to progress into the latter stages of the Champions League.
The Blues have been eliminated at the last-16 stage by Barcelona in both campaigns under Pellegrini, who insisted in his pre-match news conference that losing to the "best team in the world" was not a failure.
But they will struggle to go deep into the latter stages if they produce similarly shaky defensive displays against better teams than Monchengladbach.
City were again without injured skipper Vincent Kompany and, in his absence, were sliced open too easily by the home side.
However, thanks to Hart and Aguero, Pellegrini's side earned only their third win in their past 12 Champions League matches.

City's defensive frailties were shown in the opening goal. Left-back Aleksandar Kolarov was dragged inside to allow Julian Korb (27) the space to pick out scorer Lars Stindl (13), who was left unmarked to slot in.

Man of the match: Joe Hart

Player reaction

Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart: "We didn't play well today, we were disjointed as we had been in the last few games.
"But we deserved to win. We had some really good chances. It may have come late but Sergio Aguero is a cool guy and he will score."

Stats you need to know

  • Manchester City have only kept four clean sheets in their last 30 Champions League games
  • The Blues have scored in all but one of their last nine Champions League games
  • Monchengladbach have scored in each of their last 16 home games in European competition. The last time they did not hit score was in September 1987 against Espanyol
  • Pellegrini's team are the first English team to win away at Monchengladbach in European competition (W1 D1 L4)

Serge Aurier headed PSG's opener in the seventh minute at Lviv Arena, and the Ivory Coast right-back served up a corner kick for David Luiz to make it 2-0 in the 23rd.

PSG sealed victory when Zlatan Ibrahimovic unleashed a shot that ricocheted off Shakhtar captain Darijo Srna and flew into the net in the 90th minute.

Seydou Doumbia scored twice as CSKA Moscow held off a second-half comeback by PSV Eindhoven to win 3-2 in their Group B match.

CSKA led 3-0 at half-time thanks to Ahmed Musa's seventh-minute opener and goals from Doumbia, who scored with a looping header in the 21st minute and from the penalty spot 15 minutes later after PSV goalkeeper Jeroen Zoet brought down Zoran Tosic.

Doumbia could have completed a hat-trick in the Group B match but missed another penalty shortly before the interval.

PSV rallied after the break, with Maxime Lestienne scoring from close range on 60 minutes and firing in a second goal eight minutes later but they could not complete the comeback.

In Group C, FC Astana became the first club from Kazakhstan to win a Champions League point with a 2-2 draw against Galatasaray.

The Turkish side led until the 77th minute through Bilal Kisa's long-range goal before a string of defensive blunders decided the game.

First, Astana drew level at 1-1 when Galatasaray goalkeeper Fernando Muslera palmed Junior Kabananga's cross into defender Hakan Balta, who watched with horror as the ball bounced off him and into his own net.

Galatasaray retook the lead nine minutes later when Astana goalkeeper Nenad Eric fumbled a cross from Sinan Gumus and it bounced over the goal line.

Astana's 89th-minute equalizer came when Galatasaray goalkeeper Fernando Muslera punched the ball out to Astana's Roger Canas, who headed in.

The other game in the group saw Benfica come from behind to surprise Atletico Madrid.

Angel Correa put the hosts ahead from inside the area in the 23rd minute after a neat exchange of passes between Juan Fran and Antoine Griezmann, but Nicolas Gaitan equalized with a left-footed shot in the 36th and Goncalo Guedes put the Portuguese champions ahead after a fast break in the 51st.

Juventus put their miserable domestic form behind them to defeat Sevilla 2-0 in Group D thanks to goals from Alvaro Morata and Simone Zaza, and an excellent debut showing from Sami Khedira.

Morata headed an excellent Andrea Barzagli cross past the helpless Sergio Rico on 41 minutes, before substitute Zaza doubled Juve's lead with a late breakaway goal in the 87th minute.
