Strike duo Thierry Henry and Lukas Podolski would fit right in at Arsenal, according to Gunners defender Per Mertesacker.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is contemplating a loan move for his former captain Henry, who has been training at London Colney and will not be back in competitive action with the New York Red Bulls until the opening of the Major League Soccer season in March. The Gunners have also been heavily linked with Cologne striker Podolski, as Wenger looks for attacking cover when the transfer window opens again in January.

Mertesacker has seen first hand what both men can offer, training alongside Henry in recent weeks and playing against Podolski in the Bundesliga with Werder Bremen as well as with him for Germany.

The centre-half said: "Henry has a lot of experience and he is a great opportunity for us, but I am not the manager and I do not know what is possible, for him or for us. In training, Henry shows his class and [it is good] to have him with us."

Mertesacker, 27, signed for Arsenal just ahead of the August transfer deadline and has now settled into the hustle and bustle of top-flight English football. And he feels Podolski, 26, could make a similar positive transition.

"He is a powerful, great player, especially for the national team. He has scored a lot of goals, is a good striker with a very good finish. His left foot is unbelievable and I am a fan of him," he said.

Chelsea discussing personal terms with Gary Cahill after Bolton accept £7m bid – report



Blues boss Andre Villas-Boas is apparently keen on snapping the England defender up as quickly as possible with a view to a debut early in January, with wages now the only block

Chelsea have had a £7 million (?8.4m) bid accepted by Bolton for defender Gary Cahill and are already discussing personal terms with the player, according to The Daily Mirror.

Blues boss Andre Villas-Boas reportedly wants to rush the move through so Cahill can make his debut as soon as possible following the opening of the transfer window, with the Stamford Bridge outfit’s home clash against Portsmouth in the FA Cup on January 8 the likely target.

The newspaper claims that Cahill’s agent, John Seasman, is negotiating wages with Chelsea executive Ron Gourlay with a view to completing a medical after the weekend.

The centre-back’s contract at the Reebok Stadium is set to expire in the summer, with much-rumoured moves to Arsenal and Tottenham falling through in the previous window.

Cahill is believed to be relishing the prospect of testing himself in the Champions League and impressing England manager Fabio Capello ahead of Euro 2012.

Chelsea target Real Madrid's Gonzalo Higuain to replace departing forwards – report

The Argentine has found himself behind Karim Benzema in the pecking order at the Bernabeu and Andre Villas-Boas could turn to him to add some firepower to his squad



Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain has emerged as a target for Chelsea with the club seeking to get hold of the player’s representatives to see if he would be interested in a move to Stamford Bridge.

According to The Times, Andre Villas-Boas will find out if the 24-year-old is available as he seeks to re-adjust his faltering forward line.

The Argentine has a phenomenal scoring record with the Spanish giants and averages a goal every 53 minutes this season, having netted 12 times in La Liga despite making just seven starts.

Daniel Sturridge has proved to be a real bonus on the wing for Villas-Boas with nine goals in the Premier League and Juan Mata has slotted well on the other flank in his debut season following his summer move from Valencia.

However, the Portuguese boss has problems in the forward line with star strikers Fernando Torres and Didier Drogba both having scored just two goals in the league apiece.

Drogba, who goes to the Africa Cup of Nations next month, has yet to agree a new deal with the club and is known to be a target for Shanghai Shenhua, who want to pair him with up current team-mate Nicolas Anelka as the Frenchman is due to join the Chinese side in the transfer window.

It is also reported that Chelsea would be willing to listen to offers for Florent Malouda - who recently threatened a move away - and Salomon Kalou as the Blues look to reignite their season.

The Londoners are expected to sign Bolton Wanderers defender Gary Cahill next month but with problems persisting up front they could make a move for Higuain, who has had to settle for a place behind Karim Benzema in the starting line-up as Jose Mourinho only plays one striker in his system.

However, any move would rely on the former Chelsea boss being willing to sell the 24-year-old to his protege while Madrid are top of La Liga and targeting success in three competitions as they seek to end the dominance of rivals Barcelona.

Henry set for two-month loan



Arsenal's record goalscorer Thierry Henry has been offered the chance to return to the Gunners on a two-month loan deal, according to widespread press reports on Thursday evening.

New York Red Bulls striker Henry, 34, has been training with Arsenal since the MLS season ended in November, and Arsene Wenger is keen to bring in the Frenchman as cover for Marouane Chamakh and Gervinho who will be heading to the African Cup of Nations next month.

Henry, who is expected to sign the contract in the next 48 hours, could feature in seven Premier League games, as well as FA Cup ties and the Champions League last-16 match with AC Milan. He would return to the USA on March 10 ahead of the new MLS season.

LA Galaxy striker Landon Donovan agreed a similar deal with Everton earlier this month, and he will also return to one of his former clubs.

Defender Per Mertesacker has backed a move for Henry.

"Henry has a lot of experience and he is a great opportunity for us, but I am not the manager and I do not know what is possible, for him or for us," Mertesacker said. "In training, Henry shows his class and [it is good] to have him with us. He still has the same attitude he showed in a lot of games at Arsenal."

Donovan Arrives Friday

American's first game could be Bolton on 4 January.

Landon Donovan will arrive at Finch Farm on Friday to begin training with the Blues squad.

Despite reports to the contrary, the situation remains the same as was first announced by the Club.

The American is set to join on loan and the first match he will be eligible for is the home game against Bolton on 4 January.

He is not able to face West Brom on 1 January because the transfer window re-opens after the deadline for registrations for that round of games has closed.

Donovan agreed a two-month loan deal earlier this month, keeping him at Everton until after the Merseyside derby at Anfield on 25 February.

Arsene Wenger has confirmed that Thierry Henry will return to Arsenal on a short-term loan deal from the New York Red Bulls.

Speaking at his weekly pre-match press conference, the Gunners boss said that the much-rumoured deal "will certainly happen" and that the club are now just waiting on the paperwork to be completed.

"He knows the club, can help the players and I know one thing: it can only be positive," continued Wenger.

"He needs two good weeks' work. He is here to help - not suddenly be main player."

Chelsea could be poised to smash the transfer record with an £84million move for Porto striker Hulk.

Blues boss Andre Villas-Boas is currently overseeing a major overhaul of the Stamford Bridge club's squad and could reunite with his former forward in January.

Hulk is believed to be keen to link-up once again with Villas-Boas and would provide much-needed firepower while Didier Drogba is away on Africa Cup of Nations duty and Fernando Torres remains bereft of confidence in front of goal.

Porto slapped the massive buy-out clause on their Brazilian attacker in the summer, but his agent Theodoro Fonseca believes a deal to eclipse the £80m Real Madrid paid for Cristiano Ronaldo in 2009 could be possible.

Fonseca said: 'Hulk would wholeheartedly agree to work with Andre at Porto or Chelsea, or at any other team because he really likes the way he coaches.

'Andre knows Hulk very well and they have a good relationship. Hulk at Chelsea? Anything is possible.

'His buyout clause is 100m (euros), so his future depends on an agreement between the clubs.

'He feels good in Porto because he is treated well, but there are clubs interested in France, Brazil and everything will depend on his desire.'

Nicolas Anelka is already on his way out of Stamford Bridge and is expected to join Shanghai Shenhua, Salomon Kalou is out of contract next summer and Florent Malouda has stated he wants more first-team action or will look to move on.

The Blues are hopeful of completing their move for Bolton defender Gary Cahill early in the January transfer window while defender Alex continues to search for a new club after being told he can leave.

QPR have made a £7million bid for Rangers striker Nikica Jelavic.

Rangers manager Ally McCoist confirmed an offer had been placed prior to Wednesday's Old Firm game.

He said: 'Somebody at the club had mentioned it to me before kick-off, which was all I needed, to be frank.'

West Bromwich Albion manager Roy Hodgson was in the crowd for the game as was Everton manager David Moyes but both clubs would struggle to match QPR's offer let alone Rangers' £10m valuation.

Jelavic moved to Rangers in a £4million deal with Rapid Vienna in the summer of 2010 and has scored 28 goals in 43 appearances for the side.

Sunderland and Liverpool have also been linked with the 26-year-old who is enjoying the best goal-scoring spell in his career but McCoist added: 'What will happen, will happen.'

Meanwhile, Neil Warnock has added Aston Villa's James Collins to his list of potential defensive targets with Blackburn's Chris Samba also figuring.

EXCLUSIVE: Villa aim to keep Wolves at bay from Frimpong loan



Aston Villa boss Alex McLeish is hoping to beat Wolves to the loan signing of teenager Emmanuel -Frimpong from Arsenal.

McLeish has identified Villa’s central midfield as the key area for strengthening in January.

He has a limited budget, as he must sell to buy, but has one loan left, with crocked Spurs’ star Jermaine Jenas still technically on Villa’s books.

McLeish was very impressed with the 19-year-old (left) in Arsenal’s recent win at Villa Park and now hope to beat Wolves to Frimpong’s signature on loan till the summer.

CHELSEA'S GARY CAHILL BID ACCEPTED :
Bolton manager Owen Coyle has confirmed the club have agreed a fee with Chelsea for Wanderers defender Gary Cahill.
It emerged last week that talks had begun between the two Barclays Premier League sides over the sale of the England international, who is out of contract at the end of the season and has for some time been linked with a move away from the Reebok Stadium.
And it seems a deal is now imminent, with Coyle revealing that agreement over a fee - believed to be in the region of £7million - for the 26-year-old has been reached.
"There has been a fee agreed between the clubs and we have now given Gary's representatives permission to speak to Chelsea," said Coyle, speaking ahead of Bolton's New Year's Eve home clash with Wolves.
"That is where we are with it. We obviously have a game tomorrow and I have said to Gary that he has to be focused on giving everything for Bolton Wanderers, because he knows Bolton Wanderers has been terrific for him just as much as Gary has been for us.
"That is why they have representatives - to sort that out - and whatever January 1 brings, it will bring."
If Cahill, who joined Bolton in 2008 from Aston Villa, is to leave Wanderers in the next few days, Coyle will view it as a blessing that the move is occurring early in the January transfer window, giving him a chance to reinvest the money in new players.
The Trotters are currently 19th in the table and with Cahill departing, it would seem imperative that the squad - which has been blighted by injuries - is strengthened over the coming weeks if they are to avoid relegation.

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini has denied holding talks with Lille about the possibility of bringing in Eden Hazard.

Reports had suggested that City were lining up a January move for Hazard as Mancini prepares for the departure of Yaya Toure to the African Cup of Nations.

Hazard's agent claimed earlier this week that the Premier League club were interested, but Mancini says there has been no approach at this stage.

While Mancini is an admirer of the Belgian playmaker, he has no plans to try and secure his services in the New Year.

Good player

"No, this is not true," he said on Sky Sports News.

"He is a good player but at this moment we have not spoken about him."

Mancini is keen to keep hold of Toure for as long as possible before he links up with Ivory Coast for international duty, and hopes to have him available for the FA Cup tie against Manchester United on 8th January.

"We are trying (to delay his departure) but it is difficult I think," said the Italian.

"I think Yaya should leave after United."

Chelsea agree fee with Bolton for defender Gary Cahill

Chelsea are short of cover in central defence, with Alex out in the cold after handing in a transfer request.

Coyle said: "We have given Gary's representatives permission to speak to Chelsea."

The deal is thought to be worth £7m and Andre Villas-Boas is confident a deal can be struck, despite saying they are "miles apart" over personal terms.

The 26-year-old is out of contract with Bolton at the end of the season and BBC Sport understands Wanderers intend to reinvest all of the the funds from his sale in new players.

"We're still miles apart regarding agreement with the player," Chelsea boss Villas-Boas said. "We'll continue to monitor this situation as we continue to monitor others."

Villas-Boas did, however, confirm his admiration for the England international.

"I think his technical attributes are immense and his pace is fantastic as well," he added.

"There are weaknesses and they are also related to the collective weaknesses of Bolton.

"He's a player that at international level has been playing well. He can add to this squad or any squad in the Premier League."

Villas-Boas revealed midfielder Josh McEachran would not be joining Bolton on loan but could move to another club.

Cahill, who joined Bolton in a £5m move from Aston Villa in January 2008, made his England debut against Ghana in March 2011 and scored his first international goal in the 3-0 victory over Bulgaria in September.
