PSV 2-1 Man Utd: Louis van Gaal's side defeated as Luke Shaw suffers broken leg

Manchester United suffered a 2-1 defeat to PSV Eindhoven and lost Luke Shaw to a double leg fracture on their return to Champions League action.

In what was United's first match in the competition proper since April 2014, play was stopped for almost 10 minutes as Shaw received treatment following Hector Moreno's heavy tackle.

The England full-back was taken from the field on a stretcher in the 25th minute but it did not seem to hamper the visitors and they took the lead through former PSV star Memphis Depay's 41st minute strike.

However, their lead did not last long as Moreno levelled the scores during the lengthy period of stoppage time at the end of the first half.

After the break, United dominated possession but they found themselves behind after Maxime Lestienne's early cross found Luciano Narsingh at the far post in the 56th minute and he made no mistake, sealing all three points for the Dutch side.

After his heroics on debut against Liverpool, Anthony Martial was handed his first United start and he got an early chance to stretch his legs, running at the heart of the PSV defence before misplacing an attempted pass to Memphis.



The pair combined again in the seventh minute with Memphis firing a low cross to Martial at the near post, however the Frenchman could not get enough power on his shot to trouble Jeroen Zoet.

United's early dominance was stalled when Shaw, making his Champions League debut, burst into the PSV penalty area on a trademark run before going down under a challenge from Moreno, who got both the ball and the man.

Play was then suspended for almost 10 minutes as Shaw, who was caught by Moreno's trailing leg, received treatment for a double fracture of the leg before being stretchered off the field to a standing ovation from the Philips Stadion.

The injury seemed to dampen the atmosphere inside the stadium and both sets of players took a while to get going after seeing Shaw - who will be a huge miss for both United and England - leave the field.

Marcos Rojo came on in place of Shaw and went straight into the heart of United's defence with Daley Blind switching to left-back and they were tested straight away as Joshua Brenet slipped Narsingh in behind the United defence, but he could not time his run and was adjudged offside.

PSV were growing in confidence but it was the Dutch club's former favourite Memphis who broke the deadlock in the 41st minute, skipping past the challenges of Santiago Arias and Jeffrey Bruma before firing a low shot past Zoet.

Minutes later, the Netherlands international could have made it two but flashed a shot wide of the far post before Zoet produced a smart save to deny Chris Smalling.



All eyes were on the fourth official and there were eight minutes of added time after the earlier delay. It took PSV just two to grab an equaliser through Moreno, who rose highest to head the ball past David de Gea via a deflection from the head of Blind.

After the break it was United who started the more confident of the two sides as Martial combined with Memphis, but the latter's shot did not have enough power to trouble Zoet.

Louis van Gaal's side were dominating possession but they could not make it count as PSV took the lead in the 57th minute as Narsingh headed home Lestienne's brilliant cross.



United could have been on level terms just five minutes later when Juan Mata spurned a glorious chance after being played in on goal by Bastian Schweinsteiger's pass.

The Spain international's touch let him down at the vital time and it was the story of the Premier League side's night as they continued to dominate the ball but there was no way through a well-marshalled PSV defence, led by former Chelsea player Bruma.

With just 15 minutes left, Van Gaal threw on Marouane Fellaini in place of Ander Herrera but their luck did not change as Mata failed to hit the target from distance and Martial skewed a shot wide of the far post.



United continued to push forward, which allowed PSV to break on the counter-attack and they should have wrapped up all three points through former Newcastle striker Luuk de Jong, but he fired his effort over the bar from close range.

However, it did not come back to haunt the home side as they held on for a famous victory, leaving United in third in Group B after Wolfsburg's win over CSKA Moscow.

The Bundesliga side are United's next opponents on September 30 for what could prove a crucial fixture as Champions League football returns to Old Trafford.

Manchester City 1-2 Juventus: Mario Mandzukic and Alvaro Morata score

Juventus came from behind to consign Manchester City to a disappointing 2-1 home defeat in their Champions League opener.

Raheem Sterling missed a good early chance for the Premier League leaders before Giorgio Chiellini headed into his own net in the 57th minute under pressure from Vincent Kompany.

The Italian side replied through Mario Mandzukic and then a fantastic 81st-minute strike from Alvaro Morata secured their first victory since winning the Italian Super Cup at the start of August.

Even the late introduction of Sergio Aguero could not inspire City as they were beaten in the Group D clash.

The defeat ends City's perfect start to the season and will again raise questions over their European ambitions ahead of a trip to Borussia Monchengladbach, who lost their opener 3-0 to Sevilla.

With five wins from five league matches, City started as favourites against a Juventus side who had taken just a point from their opening three Serie A games and lost Andrea Pirlo, Carlos Tevez and Arturo Vidal in the summer.



Manuel Pellegrini sprang a surprise by naming Aguero among the substitutes, just a day after saying he would not be fit to play. Kevin De Bruyne was also on the bench while David Silva and Sterling both started.

It was Sterling who had the best opportunity of the first half as he was played through by Fernandinho in the second minute but saw his shot saved by Gianluigi Buffon.

The Italians thought they had taken the lead in the 12th minute when Paul Pogba headed in Juan Cuadrado's right-wing cross, but it was ruled out as Morata was offside and interfering with play.



It looked like it would be more of the same after the break as Juve continued to frustrate City.

However, the deadlock was broken in the 57th minute when Kompany climbed above Chiellini from a corner and the Italian was unable to prevent the ball bouncing off his head and into the net.

Juve protested that Kompany should have been penalised for a foul but they were fortunate not to fall further behind a few minutes later as Sterling was again denied by Buffon.

Stefano Sturaro missed the visitors' best chance in the 63rd minute when he had a shot from the penalty spot saved by Joe Hart.



But Juve did draw level a few minutes later as Paul Pogba was given too much time to curl a ball into the box for Mandzukic to guide in off the post.

City responded by throwing on De Bruyne for his Champions League debut and bringing on Nicolas Otamendi for Kompany, who appeared to pick up a thigh injury.

However, Otamendi could do nothing to prevent Juventus snatching victory as Morata curled a brilliant left-footed shot around Hart from the right.

A desperate Pellegrini threw on Aguero for the final few minutes but he was unable to save City from defeat.

Ronaldo scores a hat-trick as Real Madrid beat Shakhtar

A Cristiano Ronaldo hat-trick ensured Real Madrid opened their Champions League campaign with 4-0 home win over Shakhtar Donetsk.

Karim Benzema opened the scoring on the half-hour mark after a sp ill by Shakhtar goalkeeper Andriy Pyatov but the home side lost Gareth Bale to injury just two minutes after that..

Taras Stepanenko was shown a second yellow card for the visitors five minutes after the interval before Ronaldo bagged two penalties.



The first should not have stood after Darijo Srna was penalised for handball when Ronaldo's effort clearly hit his back.

Ronaldo got his second from the spot after Marcio Azevedo was punished for a more clear-cut handball and was on hand to complete his hat-trick with 10 minutes remaining when Marcelo's effort was palmed into the path of the Portuguese forward, who nodded into the net.



Elsewhere in Group A, Paris Saint-Germain started their Champions League campaign with a 2-0 win over Malmo thanks to goals from Angel Di Maria and Edinson Cavani.

Wolfsburg and PSV share top spot in Group B after wins over CSKA Moscow and Manchester United, respectively.

Julian Draxler scored the only goal of the game for Wolfsburg five minutes before half time to claim all three points.



There was to be no fairy tale Champions League debut for Astana as the Kazakh side lost 2-0 away to Benfica with second half goals coming from Nicolas Gaitan and Konstantinos Mitroglou.

Atletico Madrid share top spot in Group C after a 2-0 win in Turkey against Galatasaray. Antoine Griezmann scored twice in the first half to secure all three points for Diego Simeone's team.

Sevilla raced to the top of Group D thanks to a 3-0 win over Borussia Monchengladbach.



Kevin Gameiro opened the scoring from the penalty spot before Ever Banega added a second from 12 yards 20 minutes later. Yevhen Konoplyanka then made the scoreline more emphatic with six minutes remaining.

Juventus are second in Group D after coming from behind to beat Manchester City 2-1 at the Etihad.

Manchester United had a luckless night in their Champions League opener as Luke Shaw suffered a double leg break during defeat by PSV Eindhoven.

Shaw was chopped down by Hector Moreno before being carried off early on.

After a long delay, Memphis Depay scored a weaving opener on his return to PSV, but in first-half injury time Moreno headed in from a corner.

PSV's Luciano Narsingh headed in a 57th-minute winner despite United dominating for long periods.

Unlike previous games this season where Louis van Gaal's side have struggled to turn their superiority into chances, they chalked up 17 shots on goal to PSV's six.

There were encouraging displays from Depay, who scored his third of the season, and Anthony Martial, who made his full debut following his wonder goal during the win over Liverpool last Saturday.

Poor finishing let the visitors down, although their biggest concern will be over Shaw who will now suffer a lengthy lay-off.

United started the game well but they were rocked by the injury to Shaw after 15 minutes, who has made a positive start to his second season at Old Trafford.

The England full-back burst into the box after riding two challenges, but as he bore down on goal he was scythed down by Moreno and from the Mexico defender's immediate reaction, it was clear that the injury to Shaw was serious.

Replays showed that his right leg appeared to be broken and after 10 minutes of treatment the 20-year-old was taken off on a stretcher to sympathetic applause from the PSV fans.

There was no punishment for Moreno, who equalised in first-half stoppage time.

Depay may not have scored in the Premier League so far, but fresh from his £31m move from PSV to Manchester United in June, the 21-year-old looked at home on his return to the Philips Stadium.

The forward, who scored 22 league goals for PSV en route to the Eredivisie title last season, started down the left and linked up well with striker Martial, who showed no signs of nervousness despite his tender age of 19 and his £36m transfer fee.

Depay's goal was not dissimilar to Martial's effort at Old Trafford against Liverpool. Played through by Daley Blind, he cut inside, and beat Jeroen Zoet with some ease. When the scores were level, the Dutchman could have added to his tally after a smart one-two with Martial but struck straight at the PSV goalkeeper.

United fail to capitalise on dominance

In addition to their profligacy in front of goal, United were also guilty of contributing to both PSV goals. The first, which came from Moreno's header, bounced off Blind's head and wrong-footed Ashley Young, who was well placed to stop the initial effort on the goalline.

The second was well taken by Narsingh, who headed in a delightful left-wing cross by Maxime Lestienne, but Matteo Darmian was guilty of giving the ball away in his own half.

There was plenty of time to recover, and Depay had several chances to double his tally despite switching onto the right side during the second half.

Juan Mata was perhaps guilty of the worst miss by failing to control a chipped ball by Bastian Schweinsteiger.

There was plenty of encouragement for Van Gaal's side, who will face Wolfsburg at Old Trafford on 30 September before travelling to CSKA Moscow on 21 October, and Martial gave them added power and pace up front.

But they will be disappointed not to have earned at least a point on their return to the Champions League after a year's absence.

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal: "It's the same game as against Swansea. We are dominating the game, we are creating chances and we are not finishing. The first chance they have, the corner kick, they scored.

"The second goal, we were attacking and then we lose the ball in the first phase and they scored. It's fantastic for PSV but for us it is very bad."

With a lengthy absence to come, left-back Shaw's inclusion in the England squad at Euro 2016 must be in some doubt.

SHAW SUFFERS INJURY DURING PSV MATCH

Luke Shaw suffered a double fracture of the leg during the first half of Manchester United’s UEFA Champions League Group B defeat to PSV Eindhoven on Tuesday.

The England international cut inside from the left in the 15th minute to dribble at the Dutch defence, moving past two players before a tough challenge from Hector Moreno sent him to the ground.

Unfortunately, this was the last moment of Shaw’s match and the 20-year-old was later stretchered off to warm, respectful applause from both sets of supporters at the Philips Stadion.

The severity of the injury was confirmed after the final whistle and it is a particular blow for Shaw following his excellent start to the 2015/16 season, having finished third in our Player of the Month vote for August.

Shaw took to his personal Twitter account to post: "Thank you everyone for your messages, words can't describe how gutted I am, my road to recovery starts now, I will come back stronger."

Speaking in his post-match press conference, Louis van Gaal addressed the injury by saying: "I’m not a doctor so I cannot say, but when you have a double fracture it is four to six months. But you can never say that in advance. He won’t play in the group stage, I don’t think. I hope he will play again this season."

Pellegrini: 15 points still to play for

Manager Manuel Pellegrini focused on the 15 points still to play for in Champions League Group D after City made a losing start against Juventus.

A stunning save from Juve and Italy great Gianluigi Buffon denied David Silva with the score at 1-0 and it proved a key moment as the Serie A side fought back.

Pellegrini said: “I think it was a strange game, I don’t think that we deserved to lose this game. We played better than Juventus, we had three clear chances to score, I think Gianluigi Buffon made a good save and we were very unlucky, especially on their first goal.

“We played against a strong team, with not too many options, but I think we controlled the game and really I don’t remember Juventus creating important chances.”

Pellegrini - who confirmed that skipper Vincent Kompany had sustained a calf injury - admitted that Juve’s finishing was a difference between the teams on the night.

He added: “I expect that when we have chances we must score, because this is the Champions League and the difference between the teams is very slight, especially such a strong team as Juventus. Of course if you have clear chances and you don’t score… Juventus didn’t create so many but they finished well.”

Despite the disappointment, Pellegrini was keen to take the long term view of Group D.

“In the last two seasons we started by losing and both seasons we qualified for the next stage," he added.

“We are just starting, it’s a game you never want to lose here at home because they are three very important points but the group is just starting.

“We have 15 points more to play for so it depends on the way we play the next game.

“It’s not the best way to start losing at home against a strong team but it doesn’t mean we won’t qualify, we have to play against Juventus there and another four games, and we’ll see which team has the most points at the end.”
