QPR look likely to beat Wigan to a loan deal for Manchester United striker Federico Macheda.

Macheda’s representative, Giovanni Bia said: ‘There was nothing concrete with Wigan. The club closer to Macheda is QPR. I think at 95 per cent that Macheda will go to London, because he needs to play, and this is the only suggestion of a transfer to date.

'He’ll go on a simple loan for six months, because Sir Alex Ferguson believes in him and wants to take him back to United at the end of the season. The other five per cent of chance is that Macheda stays in Manchester.’

Liverpool are trying to gazump Chelsea’s move for Gary Cahill.

The highly-rated Bolton and England defender, 26, had been expected to join the Blues after a £7milllion transfer fee was agreed this week.

But the bid was threatened by a disagreement over personal terms and Kenny Dalglish is poised to swoop.

Cahill, who is out of contract this summer, is understood to prefer staying in the north.

Kop boss Dalglish is a big admirer of the centre-back who would compete for a place with the injury-prone Daniel Agger, Martin Skrtel and Jamie Carragher at Anfield.

It was believed that Chelsea had already wrapped up the race for Cahill’s signature.

Bolton chief Owen Coyle said yesterday: “There has been a fee agreed between the clubs and we have now given Gary’s representatives permission to speak to Chelsea.”

But Stamford Bridge manager Andre Villas-Boas later revealed that talks with Cahill had hit a snag, before appearing to suggest he was looking at alternatives.

Villas Boas said: “We’re still miles apart regarding agreement with the player. We’ll continue to monitor this situation, as we continue to monitor others.

“I think his technical attributes are immense and his pace is fantastic as well.

“He is a player that at international level has been playing well. He can add to this squad, or any squad in the Premier League.”

Cahill joined Bolton for £5m from Aston Villa in January 2008.

He made his first England start in the 1-1 friendly draw with Ghana, at Wembley, in March, and got his first Three Lions goal in September’s 3-0 Euro 2012 qualifying victory in Bulgaria.

Queens Park Rangers are considering giving Wayne Bridge a route out of his Manchester City nightmare.

Manager Neil Warnock is looking to recruit a left back as Armand Traore is set to miss a significant part of next month to join up with Senegal for the Africa Cup of Nations.

Warnock believes signing Bridge could be the answer and may make a bid when the January transfer window opens.

The former England full back, 31, is still trying to negotiate a severance package with City to ensure his release as a free agent next month — which could pave the way for a move.

But Rangers would not be prepared to take on all of Bridge’s £95,000-per-week wages and negotiating a suitable pay package would be a key to any deal taking place.

Arsenal are also keen on Bridge as they look for a short-term solution to their left-back problem, with Andre Santos and Kieran Gibbs both out injured. Bridge has made just one appearance for City this season, in the Carling Cup.

In an exclusive interview with Sportsmail last week, Bridge spoke of his frustration at City, claiming communication with manager Roberto Mancini had all but broken down.

David Beckham keen to see Chelsea's Frank Lampard join him at LA Galaxy - report

The former Manchester United man has been trying to persuade his countryman to switch to the MLS, with his own move to Paris Saint-Germain increasingly unlikely

David Beckham has spoken to Chelsea's Frank Lampard about a potential move to LA Galaxy, claiming that he would love the lifestyle in California, according to The Sun.

The pair met at the publication's Military Awards on December 19 where the former Manchester United man tried to persuade the out-of-favour Blues' midfielder to join him in the MLS.

The report states that Galaxy could match the Stamford Bridge player's £150,000-a-week wages despite already having three players over the salary cap, one of which being Beckham himself.

A MLS source was quoted as saying: "Galaxy have three designated players — Beckham, Robbie Keane and Landon Donovan, who is on loan at Everton.

"However, there could be a way around the rules so Lampard could also join."

Beckham had been reportedly set for a move to Paris Saint-Germain, with Lampard also rumoured to be of interest to former coach Carlo Ancelotti, who was installed as the Ligue 1 club's new boss on Friday.

However, the former England captain's move to the French capital now appears to be unlikely.

Qatar club ready to move for £15m Taarabt

Qatar-based club Al-Sadd are ready to match Queen Park Rangers’ £15million valuation of unhappy midfielder Adel Taarabt.

The 22-year-old was a target for Paris Saint Germain, but his price-tag put them off.

Tottenham, who sold him to Loftus Road, are due 40% of any fee QPR get in a deal.

Liverpool plot shock £24m swoop for England striker

LIVERPOOL are ready to test Aston Villa’s resolve to hang on to their England striker Darren Bent.

People Sport understands that Bent would jump at the chance to link up again with his former Villa team-mate and England colleague Stewart Downing at Anfield.

And Liverpool, who have noted that Bent is failing to reproduce his England form for Villa, are weighing up a bid.

The Merseysiders know they would have to match the £24million Villa paid Sunderland for Bent last January.

Blackburn boss Steve Kean making an ambitious bid for Real Madrid’s Esteban Granero on loan

Jan 1 2012 by Alan Nixon, The People

Blackburn boss Steve Kean is making an ambitious bid to sign Real Madrid’s unwanted star Esteban Granero on loan for the relegation battle.

Kean has asked midfield schemer Granero to come to Rovers and put himself in the shop window for a full-time move to Blackburn – or any other Premier League outfit.

The talented 24-year-old’s career needs to be kick-started and he is keen on coming to England. Granero has played for Spain at all international levels up to the Under-21s.

Spanish sources confirmed to Hotline that Real chief Jose Mourinho will let the £6million-rated Granero go, and the move is now down to the player.

Andre Villas-Boas is keeping tabs on Valencia star Roberto Soldado

Jan 1 2012 by Tom Hopkinson, The People

ANDRE VILLAS-BOAS is keeping tabs on Valencia star Roberto Soldado as he prepares to revamp his Stamford Bridge strikeforce.

The CHELSEA manager has sent scouts to watch the forward several times this term and the feedback has been positive.

Soldado, 26, has bagged eight goals in La Liga and five in the Champions League, and Villas-Boas will monitor his form for the rest of the campaign.

The Portuguese has already allowed Nicolas Anelka to join Chinese side Shanghai Shenhua during this window.

Fellow striker Didier Drogba’s future is also in doubt as his contract expires this summer, with no new Blues deal agreed.

Soldado has a clause in his contract, which runs until 2014, allowing him to leave the Mestalla for £30million.

But Valencia can try and resist offers now after selling David Villa, Juan Mata and David Silva to balance their books.

LIVERPOOL, PARIS ST-GERMAIN and BAYERN MUNICH are all running checks on Soldado too, while Villas-Boas is also keen on Real Madrid hitman Gonzalo Higuain.

Chris Samba will ask for a move from Blackburn with QPR ready to make a bid of £6 millon

Jan 1 2012 by Dave Kidd, The People

CHRIS SAMBA is set to ask for a move from Blackburn, with QPR boss Neil Warnock about to make a £6million bid.

Tottenham and Liverpool are also monitoring the 27-year-old centre-back, who has been in outstanding form despite Blackburn’s miserable run.

Rovers do not want to sell for less than £10m but it is believed Samba will ask for a move if no fee can be agreed for his sale.

Gunners linked with Podolski swoop

Arsenal are believed to be preparing a £10 million transfer bid for Lukas Podolski, amid reports the FC Cologne striker has fallen out with the club's director of sport, Volker Finke.

Podolski, 26, has scored 14 goals in 16 Bundesliga games this season and is in some of the best form of his career, but the Germany international has hinted that he may leave Cologne as his contract expires.

The reported bust-up with Finke could hasten Podloski's exit and Claus Horstman, the German club's managing director, virtually confirmed the rift, saying: "The two don't have to love each other, but they must respect each other and trust each other."

Arsene Wenger has already signed up New York Red Bull's striker Thierry Henry on a short-term loan deal in order to add more fire power to the Arsenal attack, but Podolski would provide a long-term partner for Robin van Persie.

And Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker thinks fellow German international Podolski would be perfect for the Gunners. "He scores a lot of goals, he's a good striker with a very good left foot," he said.

"His left foot is unbelievable and I'm a fan of his. This year, he has scored a lot of goals. He is powerful as well he's a great player."

Cologne have reportedly slapped a £12.5 million price tag on Podolski, but with his contract due to expire in June 2013 there is room for negotiation.

Exclusive: Villa to offer Robbie Keane shock Prem return

Aston Villa boss Alex McLeish is ready to give Robbie Keane a shock return to the Premier League if he can cut through red tape.

The Republic of Ireland star is taking a break at the end of the MLS season with Los Angeles Galaxy, but McLeish would like to take him on loan for a couple of months.

Keane could be open to the plan to keep himself sharp before heading back to California and building up for the Euro 2012 finals with his country.

However Keane would need clearance from both LA Galaxy and the MLS - plus a big insurance payment - to make the move happen, but it is being explored by Villa.

Keane could play for a short spell - as Thierry Henry will do at Arsenal - but there would be a cost for the whole package that Villa will have to weigh up.

McLeish is looking for bargain deals in the window and landing Keane, even for a handful of games, would be a help for him if the numbers are right.

Sunderland eye Villa defender

Aston Villa have quoted Sunderland a whopping £6-8million for centre-back James Collins.

Villa boss Alex McLeish is prepared to cash in on Wales international Collins, 28, with his contract up in 2013.

Villa have to sell to buy and want money to move for an influential midfielder.

But there remains ill-feeling between Villa hierarchy and new Sunderland boss Martin O’Neill over his exit from the club in 2010.

And Villa want top dollar off the Black Cats if they are to do business.

O’Neill signed Collins for Villa in 2009 on a four-year deal when he paid £5m for the stopper, who picks up around £40,000-a-week.

Exclusive: Baggies in pole position to land Sunderland ace

West Brom are in pole position to sign unsettled Sunderland ace Craig Gardner.

Former Birmingham and Aston Villa midfielder Gardner, 25, wants to return to the Midlands for family reasons.

He has struggled to settle in the North East and has Albion, Wolves and Villa all interested after scoring 10 goals last term.

But the Baggies are now favourites to get Gardner on an initial loan ahead of a permanent transfer.

Albion like Gardner and are willing to then offer him a three-year deal next summer.

But they spent all of their 2011/2012 transfer budget this summer and cannot afford to buy him outright now.

Wolves also want Gardner on loan but are not prepared to guarantee signing him next summer with their top-flight place in jeopardy.

Getting Gardner off the wage bill with a guaranteed permanent deal will give new Black Cats boss Martin O'Neill more room for his own signings.
