When Reading's John Mackie admitted -- admitted -- racially abusing a Sheffield Utd player, the FA banned him for three matches. Three.

PFA chief blasts Suarez defence

The head of the Professional Footballers Association, Gordon Taylor, has given a scathing review of Luis Suarez's "cultural differences" defence against his racism charge.

Suarez is likely to appeal the eight-match ban and £40,000 fine he received for racially abusing Manchester United defender Patrice Evra. Taylor, though, suggested it was time for Suarez to accept the Football Association's verdict, and hit out at the claim that the terms used by the striker toward Evra would be deemed acceptable in Suarez's homeland in South America.

"A lot has been made about different cultures and what is deemed to be racist abuse there," Taylor told the Telegraph. "But the point is, if it isn't wrong to make reference to somebody's skin colour [in another country] in this way, it should be.

"When it comes to banter between players, I think it is pretty clear that to make reference to somebody's nationality, or the colour of their skin, is wrong regardless of where the player has come from in the world.

"I've travelled the world a lot and this defence that it is okay to make reference to the colour of somebody's skin in South America in a jovial manner, well I've not heard that before. In the past we've been told that spitting [at someone] is common in South America and I've not seen that either.

"Maybe our standards are so high because we have such a multicultural society and such a multicultural game, but that is only right. That does not mean our standards are too politically correct or anything like that."

Taylor also insists it should be the prerogative of every club to ensure foreign players are aware of the customs in their country of work. The PFA chief says his organisation advocates such education of foreign players through various anti-racism campaigns.

"I think it is up to the clubs to ensure new players are aware of what is right and wrong and they do. This isn't something that happens normally and foreign players have been coming here in large numbers for the last two decades and that includes players from South America.

"If I was to work abroad, in the Middle East or Asia, it would be up to my employer and myself to make me aware of what is deemed acceptable behaviour in that culture and what is not. It's about respecting the country and the culture where you work. I don't see why that is any different here.

"We have high-profile campaigns in this country supported by the PFA, Kick it Out, Show Racism the Red Card and Football Unites, Racism Divides which make it quite clear to every player what sort of language is acceptable and what is abusive. These campaigns are highly visible at every club in the country.

"Every club has a player liaison officer to welcome players from abroad and look after them and it should be up to them to make it clear what is acceptable and is not," Taylor said.

Fergie - Suarez decision right
Man Utd manager says Liverpool should accept ban

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson believes Liverpool should accept the Football Association's decision to suspend Luis Suarez for eight matches.

The Reds striker was hit with the lengthy ban and fined £40,000 after being found guilty of using a discriminatory slur against Manchester United full-back Patrice Evra.

Liverpool responded with a strongly-worded statement in which they criticised the FA and claimed Evra should also face charges after he admitted insulting Suarez during the altercation, while their players wore T-shirts in support of the Uruguayan before their draw with Wigan.

Ferguson initially insisted he had 'nothing to say' about the T-shirts, but has now broken his silence and stated the FA reached the correct decision.

"Our support of Patrice was obvious right from the word go and that's still the same," he said.

"The matter is over and I think we're satisfied that they [the FA's independent commission] found the right decision.

"This wasn't about Manchester United and Liverpool at all. It was nothing to do with that. This was an individual situation where one person was racially abused."

Guidelines

The Scot also drew parallels with Evra's four-game ban in 2008 following an incident involving Chelseagroundsman Sam Bethell, saying Liverpool should do what United did and take the punishment even if they disagree.

"Patrice got that suspension for the incident down at Chelsea when no-one was there, just a groundsman and our fitness coach," he said. "He got a four-match ban and we had to wait two weeks for the evidence to come through.

"We were quite astounded at that. A four-match ban? We thought it was well over the top for a trivial incident. But it happened and there's nothing you can do about it, you know."

Kenny Dalglish has continued to back Suarez through a difficult time and said on Friday that he did not think Liverpool's actions in supporting the striker had caused any trouble.

But Dalglish has called for the introduction of guidelines advising clubs on what language is and is not acceptable.

"It would be helpful to everyone if someone gave us some guidelines about what you can and cannot say," the Scot was quoted as saying in the Independent.

Report says Suarez called Evra a 'negro' 7 times

LONDON (AP) -Liverpool striker Luis Suarez called Manchester United's Patrice Evra a "negro'' seven times in the incident that led to him being banned for eight matches, according to a disciplinary commission that branded the offending player's evidence as "unreliable.''

The 115-page report from the English Football Association's independent panel was published on Saturday, detailing the verbal confrontation between Suarez and Evra, a black France defender, during the Oct. 15 match at Anfield.

Suarez's defense centered on a claim that the use of the "negro'' in Uruguay and other parts of Latin America is inoffensive in certain situations. But the panel found that Suarez's argument was "unsustainable.''

Liverpool now has 14 days to decide whether to appeal against Suarez's eight-match ban and 40,000-pound ($62,000) fine, with both on hold pending the outcome of any challenge.

The report says that when Evra asked Suarez during the 1-1 draw why he had been kicked, the striker replied in Spanish: "Porque tu eres negro,'' which translates as "because you are black.''

Evra said he would punch Suarez if he repeated the comment to which Suarez said: "No hablo con los negros'' - "I don't speak to blacks.''

The FA called in linguistic experts to assess Suarez's defense, but they determined that his language on the pitch "would be considered racially offensive'' anywhere.

"Mr. Suarez said that he pinched Mr. Evra's skin in an attempt to defuse the situation. He also said that his use of the word 'negro' to address Mr. Evra was conciliatory and friendly. We rejected that evidence,'' the report said. "To describe his own behavior in that way was unsustainable and simply incredible given that the players were engaged in an acrimonious argument.

"That this was put forward by Mr. Suarez was surprising and seriously undermined the reliability of his evidence on other matters.''

The report says Suarez failed to offer a "satisfactory explanation'' for the inconsistencies in his evidence.

Suarez has consistently denied being racist since the incident and the FA and Evra accept that.

But the report concludes by saying that Suarez pledged in the hearing that "he will not use the word 'negro' on a football pitch in England in the future, and we believe that is his genuine and firm intention.''
