Joel Campbell is a gamble worth taking, Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger admitsThe manager believes that the Costa Rica forward, who shined in the Under-20 World Cup, is a fantastic prospect and urges critics to judge signings on performances, not fees
Arsene Wenger believes that summer signing Joel Campbell is "a gamble worth taking".Arsenal snapped up the youngster from Deportivo Sarpissa after he impressed in the recent Copa America, where he inspired Costa Rica to a 2-0 win over Bolivia.
He also impressed at the recent Under-20 World Cup and Wenger believes the 19-year-old is right for the Gunners.
Wenger told Arsenal.com: “Joel is a young prospect, he has talent and he can play right, left or centrally.
"We took a gamble on him but, from what we have seen, it is worth taking."Campbell could join the club, Gervinho has joined the club, Carl Jenkinson and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain have joined the club and people forget that. You can see that Gervinho has had a big impact as well.”
Wenger is under pressure from fans to spend money following the sale of former captain Cesc Fabregas, but
he has urged critics to judge his signings on their ability and not on their transfer fee.
Wenger continued: "Sometimes you feel the reputation of the player is punished by the fact he did not have a massive transfer fee.“You would like people to look just at the quality of the players and feel if they are Arsenal players or not."
