Arsenal to sign striker Chu Young Park

Arsenal Football Club can confirm they have agreed to sign striker Chu Young Park from AS Monaco.

The 26-year-old South Korea captain scored 25 times in 91 appearances for the French club during three seasons in Ligue 1.

The one-time Asian Young Footballer of the Year made his debut for the South Korea senior side at just 19, and played in both the 2006 and 2010 World Cups. He replaced the retired Ji Sung Park as captain of the national team earlier this year.

Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger said: “We are delighted to have signed Chu. He will add true quality to our attacking forces and will be a valuable addition to the squad.”

Chu Young Park said: "I am very honoured and I feel very happy to be at Arsenal. It is a dream to be here and I am really proud to be an Arsenal player. Now I just want to show how good I am and prove myself.

"In my opinion this is a great club, now I have to show what I can do on the pitch. I will do my best, I will never give up, I will show heart, I will give everything and I hope [the fans] will support me."

The deal is subject to the completion of formal registration processes.

Chu Young Park will wear the No 9 shirt at Arsenal. The striker prefers to be known as 'Ju' and will therefore have J. Y. Park as his shirt name.

Monaco striker Park Chu-Young could be set to join Arsenal despite reportedly having an agreement to join Ligue 1 champions Lille, according to the French club's president.

Park is expected to leave the principality after the club suffered relegation from the French top division last season and was reportedly close to a move to Lille for ?3 million (£2.6m).

However, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is thought to be keen on boosting his attacking options before the transfer window closes and could be set to snatch Park from under the noses of Lille.

Park was reportedly ready to undergo the second part of his medical at Lille on Saturday though the president of the French champions claims the striker has now flown to London to finalise a move to England.

Lille president Michael Seydoux has revealed that the Korean "went to England and, apparently, to sign for Arsenal".

Lille are furious at the 26-year-old's apparent about face as he had earlier agreed a three-year deal, worth ?190,000 (£168,000) a month.

According to L'Equipe Seydoux said: "We are stunned with his unacceptable behaviour in terms of human qualities. This shows the player had nothing to do the Lille."

Arsenal are on the verge of signing Korean midfielder Park Chu-Young, with the Monaco player undergoing a medical in London on Saturday, Goal.com can reveal.

The 26-year-old looked to be joining Lille as recently as Friday, with the Ligue 1 club close to securing a ?3 million deal.

However, Lille president Michael Seydoux admitted that Park had left France and was headed for London, “apparently to sign for Arsenal”.

Goal.com understands that Park was introduced to the Arsenal squad on Saturday morning, and is undergoing a medical at their London Colney training base.

Ironically, Park was expected to take the second part of a medical with Lille at that time, but had gone AWOL, according to reports in France.

Seydoux told L'Equipe: "We are stunned with his unacceptable behaviour in terms of human qualities. This shows the player had nothing to do with Lille."
