West Brom manager Tony Pulis faces anxious fortnight as Spurs prepare bid for Saido Berahino Tony Pulis is ready for a frenetic fortnight at West Bromwich Albion as Tottenham Hotspur prepare an opening bid for £25million-rated forward Saido Berahino.Pulis will step up his search for signings this week with the £5million capture of Cardiff City goalkeeper David Marshall expected to be the first arrival in a busy finale to the transfer window.
Albion want to sign at least three more players before September 1 and this disappointing performance at Vicarage Road only emphasised the need for some stardust.
But Pulis is also facing the possible departure of Berahino, the England under-21 international, with Tottenham Hotspur set to make an opening bid of around £15million this week.Spurs are some way short of Albion’s strict valuation but are prepared to test the water with an offer, despite confirming the signing of Lyon forward Clinton Njie on Saturday.
Pulis would ideally like to keep Berahino but has admitted he will not stand in his way if Spurs meet the asking price.
"If there's an unbelievable offer for Saido then nobody turns it down. Tottenham didn't turn it down for [Gareth] Bale, Manchester United never turned it down for [Cristiano] Ronaldo, you just don't do it,” he said.
“To say he's not going to go is wrong for me, but it's going to have to be something special.
"We don’t want him to go, I personally don't think it's right for him to go. He's playing regularly here and he's almost the main man.
"The window is a nightmare at times, especially for clubs like us who are in transition. You don't know where you're going or what you're doing.
We need to have a good two weeks, then we can close it and just concentrate on the football.”
There could be other surprise exits before the transfer window closes, with Joleon Lescott facing an uncertain future after being dropped for Saturday’s stalemate.
Lescott has attracted interest from Aston Villa and Stoke City and could leave the Hawthorns after barely 12 months.
Brown Ideye, last season’s £9million signing, Stephane Sessegnon and Victor Anichebe will also be allowed to go if the club receive acceptable offers.
Pulis is focusing on squad strengthening and is close to signing Marshall, the Scotland international, from Cardiff.
Marshall will provide competition for Boaz Myhill with Ben Foster not expected back until October as he recovers from a knee injury.
"We need to change things, the chairman knows we need to improve in certain areas quickly,” said Pulis.
“It's going to be a busy couple of weeks for us and we want to bring quite a few more in, while there are also going to be people leaving. If we can do the business we want, we will surprise people.”
It was Berahino who missed the best chance of this entertaining draw, heading wide ten minutes from time from only four yards out.
