Norwich in talks with Napoli for defender Kalidou Koulibaly

Norwich are locked in negotiations with Napoli for their centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly, Sky sources understand.

The Canaries are understood to have made an initial £8.6m approach to the Serie A side for the 24-year-old Frenchman, who moved to Naples from Belgian side Genk a year ago.

Koulibaly impressed for Napoli last season, featuring 37 times in all competitions for the Partenopei last term.

But the versatile defender was left on the bench in Napoli's season-opening 2-1 defeat at Sassuolo at the weekend.

Southampton were linked with a move for Koulibaly last week, with the Saints thought to be viewing the former France U20 international as an alternative to primary defensive target Virgil van Dijk of Celtic.

Koulibaly began his youth career with hometown club Saint-Die and nearby Metz, before breaking into the latter's first team in 2010.
