Everton’s worst fears over Leighton Baines are set to be realised with the left back facing a lay-off that could last until November.
The England defender had surgery in May to repair his right ankle ligament but suffered an injury in the same place at the club’s Finch Farm training base at the end of last week.
He will now visit a specialist but it seems inevitable another operation will be required.
Roberto Martinez described the setback as ‘a real disaster’ and games against Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United are among those he is set to miss.
Baines will also be out of England’s four remaining Euro 2016 qualifiers. His absence, though, will not force Martinez to reassess his transfer plans.
Xherdan Shaqiri, the Inter Milan playmaker, is Martinez’s top target. He also wants River Plate defender Ramiro Funes Mori, and a striker.
Martinez was relieved to escape a difficult opening match with a point.
With better fortune, Watford would have hung on following the goals by Miguel Layun and Odion Ighalo. They are two of 22 foreign players in Quique Flores’s squad and the Watford boss says it will be hard to trim that number to 17.
‘It will be difficult,’ he said. ‘We have 22 different nationalities but they are a unit. They understand perfectly what we want.’

Everton defender Leighton Baines out for 12 to 14 weeks after ankle surgery

Leighton Baines will be out of action for over three months after the Everton defender underwent ankle surgery on Thursday.

The Toffees full-back suffered the knock on the eve of the Premier League campaign on the same ankle that required surgery in May when the 30-year-old was forced to miss the final two matches of last season.

The club confirmed on their website that England international Baines had received surgery "to correct the problem" and that the "injury has now been repaired".

After picking up the injury in training, his manager Roberto Martinez told the club's website: "It was a very, very unfortunate block in training, where the ball hit his ankle that he had a little bit of trouble with in the later stages of last season.

"It's really sad and disappointing because Leighton came back probably stronger than ever and this pre-season he showed fantastic signs.

"To lose him in the week that you're preparing to start the season is very disappointing. We're just hoping we can get him back quicker than we fear, because the injury looks very similar to what he had before.

"We still have to find out how long it will be, but it is not going to be just two or three weeks - I think it is going to be a little bit longer than that."

There was better news for Everton with Baines' fellow left-back Luke Garbutt not requiring surgery after damaging ankle ligaments.

The 22-year-old, currently on loan at Championship side Fulham, will though need a lengthy period of recuperation before returning to action.
