Andy Carroll may have to wait until October to make his first team return with West Ham - Andy Carroll may not return to action with West Ham until this autumn
- The 26-year-old has been unavailable since February with a knee problem
- Carroll has been blighted by numerous problems since he joined Liverpool from Newcastle in January 2011
West Ham United fans may not see record signing Andy Carroll in the first-team until October to ensure his return from injury will be long-lasting.Carroll, 26, has been blighted by a number of problems since joining Liverpool from Newcastle United at the start of 2011 and
has not played for West Ham since February due to a knee injury that required surgery.Hammers manager Slaven Bilic and the club's medical staff don't want to take any risks with his comeback this time and put some of his problems down to not having had a full pre-season since establishing himself in the Premier League.
Carroll has been doing some work at the training ground and could rejoin the first-team squad for training in three weeks. But that will be seen as just the start of his rehabilitation and having been out for so long, he will be ideally given two months to prepare his body for the rest of the season.West Ham, who have played three matches in the Europa League this season, have Diafra Sakho, Enner Valencia and Mauro Zarate as striker alternatives in Carroll's absence and are interested in bringing an extra forward though QPR's Charlie Austin and Fabio Borini of Liverpool are both considered overpriced.
Co-chairman David Gold tweeted recently that West Ham were hopeful Carroll would be available in early September.
It was a message of encouragement to the player and Hammers fans who have seen him play only 16 matches in two seasons since he was signed from Liverpool for £15million in 2013.
But the reality is Carroll will be asked to show more patience before he returns to competitive action in the belief that it is better to wait an extra few weeks and having him available for the rest of the season - rather than have the well-built centre-forward break down again.
