Newcastle make Charlie Austin top transfer target



Newcastle United have made QPR striker Charlie Austin their top transfer target this summer as new head coach Steven McClaren looks to bolster his side.

Austin is currently with the England squad after an impressive debut season in the Premier League where he bagged 18 goals for the Loftus Road club, which still was not enough to save Chris Ramsey’s side from relegation.

Sky Sources understand Newcastle are in talks with Austin's representatives over a potential move to St James' Park.

The 25-year-old is McClaren's top signing target after taking over as head coach this week after leaving Derby County.

Austin has completed a remarkable journey from non-league football and could make his debut for the national side when they take on Slovenia in their European Championship qualifying fixture on Sunday.  

The striker joined QPR from Burnley in August 2013 after scoring 45 goals in 90 appearances for the Clarets.

QPR have rejected a bid of £12m from Leicester for striker Charlie Austin, according to Sky sources. It is thought QPR will not let the striker leave for less than £15m.

QPR have received no firm approach from Newcastle for striker Charlie Austin, according to director of football Les Ferdinand. Relegated QPR may look to cash in on the England international, who scored 18 goals in the Premier League last term.

But Ferdinand told West London Sport: "Newcastle might have enquired by speaking to the chairman, but no bid has come in from Newcastle for Charlie."

Ferdinand also admitted the club turned down a bid for midfielder Matt Phillips due to a difference in valuation.

"We had an offer come in for Matty Phillips that was well below what we value him at, so we turned the offer down,” Ferdinand said.

AUSTIN BETTING SUSPENDED

Sky Bet have suspended betting on Newcastle signing QPR striker Charlie Austin after reporting bets at as short as 1/10.

The 26-year-old, who scored 18 goals in his debut season in the Premier League, is widely expected to leave Loftus Road after Rangers were relegated back to the Sky Bet Championship.

Austin’s impressive haul earned him a first England call-up towards the end of the campaign and he has been linked with several top-flight clubs.

However, the odds on Aston Villa, West Ham, Chelsea and Bournemouth drifted significantly as interest in him joining the Magpies cranked up, while Austin was 20/1 to remain with QPR before the market was pulled.
