Black Cats target Westwood
Coventry goalkeeper in demand after seeing out contract

Last Updated: June 9, 2011 9:26am

Skysports.com understands that Sunderland are set to win the race for Coventry goalkeeper Keiren Westwood.

The highly-rated shot-stopped is available on a free transfer after reaching the end of his contract with the Championship side at the Ricoh Arena.

The Sky Blues were keen to keep hold of the 26-year-old Republic of Ireland international but have been unable to agree fresh terms with their No.1

Black Cats boss Steve Bruce is in the market for a new goalkeeper with continued concerns over Craig Gordon's long-term fitness.

And the Wearside club look to have jumped ahead of Everton and Leicester in the battle for Westwood's signature.

Bruce confirmed at the end of last month that they would not be opening new contract talks with Gordon until he has recovered from a recent knee operation.

Aston Villa close in on Wigan boss Roberto Martinez to mind Randy Lerner's money

By Janine Self

Last updated at 11:04 PM on 8th June 2011

The rise and rise of Roberto Martinez has taken him to the brink of becoming the next Aston Villa manager.

The Wigan boss spoke to Villa on his return from a break in Barbados and is now in pole position to succeed Gerard Houllier, who left last week because of health problems.

Martinez, who was given permission by Wigan chairman Dave Whelan to talk to Villa, ticks all the boxes as far as owner Randy Lerner is concerned — especially when it comes to working on a tight budget.

The American, looking for his third manager in nine months, also had a conversation with former Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez, but was not convinced, especially given Benitez’s spending demands.

Significantly, Lerner cancelled a meeting with former England coach Steve McClaren because of fans’ reaction to his possible availability.

Now it remains to be seen whether Martinez is able to tear himself away from a club dear to his heart after an association that goes back 16 years, to when he was a player.

‘I’d be surprised if he is Villa’s new manager,’ said Whelan. ‘I have made it clear to him that I will be extending his contract.

‘Villa have acted above board and in a totally professional manner throughout. They wrote to me asking for permission to speak to Roberto. He was on holiday at the time and I granted Villa permission.’

At 37, Martinez is the Barclays Premier League’s youngest manager. His dream move to the top flight came after he led Swansea to the League One title in 2008.

Whelan invited him to take over at the DW Stadium in 2009 and since then he has maintained Wigan’s status and increased his reputation as a coach. More importantly, he has helped Wigan become Villa’s bogey team, which captured the attention of Lerner.

McClaren had started the day as favourite to succeed Houllier, only to find he was no longer required for an interview. It appears the avalanche of negative reaction stunned Villa into a rethink.

Redemption for the man dubbed the Wally with the Brolly after failing to take England to the 2008 European Championship finals must wait a little longer.

That left the two Spaniards, Benitez and Martinez, as the only matadors in the Bull Ring.

Benitez, 51, has been touting for a job back in the Premier League since his six-month tenure at Inter Milan ended disastrously in December.

Martinez is fresh, young, and knows about modest budgets after Swansea and Wigan. He and Villa could be a marriage made in heaven.

Newcastle slap £6m price tag on Nolan after snubbing West Ham bid

By Sportsmail Reporter

Last updated at 11:00 PM on 8th June 2011

West Ham have had a £3million offer for Newcastle midfielder Kevin Nolan rejected.

Manager Sam Allardyce is eager to be re-united with his former Bolton captain, who has turned down the offer of a new contract at St James' Park.

Newcastle want £6m for the 28-year-old, who scored 12 League goals last season - one more than Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney.

Neil Warnock’s newly promoted side lead the chase for the in-demand Wales centre back after putting in the offer just after 5pm last night.

West Bromwich Albion and Norwich City are also keen.

Liverpool stuck with Alberto Aquilani after Juventus pull out of deal for Italian

By John Edwards

Last updated at 11:00 PM on 8th June 2011

Kenny Dalglish is in danger of being saddled with a midfielder he does not want after Juventus told Alberto Aquilani that they will not be taking up the option to sign him on a permanent basis.

On the day the Liverpool manager wrapped up the £20million acquisition of Sunderland's England Under 21 midfielder Jordan Henderson, Juventus finally confirmed that new coach Antonio Conte had won the battle of wills over on-loan Aquilani's future.

While Juve's board had given Aquilani assurances that they would be keeping him beyond his 12-month temporary stay, Conte insisted, after being recruited to replace the sacked Luigi Del Neri, that Liverpool's £17million signing from Roma had no place in his plans.

A bitterly unhappy Aquilani is now pinning his Serie A hopes on AC Milan following up their interest in him and agreeing a fee with Liverpool and personal terms with the 26-year old.

Worryingly for Dalglish, Inter Milan are the only other realistic candidates for his signature. Unless either of the San Siro clubs come to the rescue, Aquilani will return to Anfield, despite his wife and young daughter wanting to stay in Italy.

Dalglish would then face the task of trying to coax the best out of a player who has slipped further down the pecking order, after Henderson's arrival, and is seething at his treatment by Juventus.

He claims a deal was in place in January, after an £8million fee was agreed between the clubs, and that Juve have gone back on their word.

Milan are his best hope of salvaging a full-time move back to Serie A, after they lost Andrea Pirlo to Juventus, but Liverpool may have to take an even bigger financial hit than the one negotiated with the Turin club.

Fergie 2 Kop 0: United boss snaps up Phil Jones... and now for Ashley Young

By Chris Wheeler and John Edwards

Last updated at 8:16 AM on 9th June 2011

Sir Alex Ferguson will complete a dramatic transfer double over Liverpool in the next 48 hours by signing England winger Ashley Young from Aston Villa in a £15million deal.

The Manchester United manager took time out from his holiday in the south of France to ambush old rival Kenny Dalglish by paying £16.5m to snatch Blackburn’s teenage defender Phil Jones from Liverpool’s grasp.

And, as revealed in Sportsmail last month, Ferguson is convinced he will win the race for Anfield target Young as well.

The 25-year-old’s agent, Eric Walters, was understood to have been at United’s training ground at Carrington on Wednesday to finalise the deal.

Young is said to want the move to Old Trafford tied up before his wedding this weekend.

His arrival will complete a remarkable coup for Ferguson following the capture of Jones.

Liverpool thought they were first in line for the highly rated 19-year-old after agreeing to sign his England Under 21 team-mate Jordan Henderson from Sunderland in a deal worth £20m.

Both players were given permission to miss England’s flight to Denmark ahead of the European Under 21 Championship.

But, while Henderson travelled to Merseyside for his medical, Jones and his representatives met United to complete a five-year deal worth £40,000 a week.

Ferguson acted on his long-standing interest in Jones when it looked like the player was bound for Anfield, the manager interrupting his summer holiday to sanction the deal.

He told Jones he sees him as the long-term replacement for Rio Ferdinand and also talked to his parents.

Dalglish and Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger are both believed to have spoken to the teenager after agreeing to meet the £16m release clause in his contract.

The Gunners will now turn their attention to landing Bolton’s Gary Cahill or Blackburn’s Chris Sambahaving missed out on Jones.

Blackburn also made a huge effort to keep Jones, offering to beat United’s terms by making him the highest-paid player at Ewood Park on £50,000 a week, while Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp confirmed he made a late bid.

‘We were in for him along with about five other top clubs,’ said Redknapp. ‘I think everybody was in for the boy.

‘Obviously he had a choice and he’s made up his mind that Manchester United was the move for him.

‘I think he’s got the potential to go on one day to be an England centre half and maybe even a captain of England. I think he’s that good so Alex has pulled off a real coup.’

United striker Wayne Rooney was first to indicate that a deal had been done when he wrote on Twitter: ‘Phil Jones is a good young English player. One of the toughest defenders I played against last season. Can play midfield too.’

Ferguson will take his summer spending to almost £50m when he completes the signing of Spanish goalkeeper David De Gea from Atletico Madrid.

Although 20-year-old De Gea insisted he will make an announcement on his future after the European Under 21 Championship, a £17m deal is already in place as United look to replace Edwin van der Sar, who retired at the end of the season.

EXCLUSIVE: Chelsea close in on Lukaku with £20m striker set for Stamford Bridge

By John Edwards

Last updated at 1:11 PM on 8th June 2011

Chelsea are closing in on teenage striker Romelu Lukaku after setting up talks with him this weekend.

A Stamford Bridge delegation is due to meet with Lukaku, his agent and officials from Anderlecht in Monaco on Saturday, according to sources close to the 18-year old self-confessed Chelsea fan.

Chelsea are pressing ahead with a deal for the coveted frontrunner, also a target for Real Madrid and both Milan clubs, after he made it clear he saw his future at Stamford Bridge.

Sportsmail revealed on Monday how he filled in a questionnaire for a young fan, at a sponsor's event in the Flemish city Hasselt, and wrote that his dream was to be a Chelsea player.

He appears to be on the verge of fulfilling his lifelong ambition after Chelsea broke off from trying to install Guus Hiddink as successor to the sacked Carlo Ancelotti to arrange negotiations with the powerfully-built forward and his club.

Anderlecht want at least £20million for their prize asset and will also ask for Kevin De Bruyne on loan, should the 19-year old winger's proposed move to Stamford Bridge go through.

As revealed in Sportsmail, Chelsea have closely followed De Bruyne's progress during a season in which his five goals from 32 appearances helped Genk to the Belgium League title.

The 19-year old left-winger, who also made his senior debut for Belgium, could be part of an imminent double transfer breakthrough for Chelsea, who would then loan him to Anderlecht next season as part of the deal for Lukaku.

Leeds set to offer unwanted Newcastle star Smith a return to Elland Road

By Sportsmail Reporter

Last updated at 3:42 PM on 8th June 2011

Leeds chairman Ken Bates has not ruled the possibility of Newcastle midfielder Alan Smith returning to Elland Road.

But Bates warned any chance of a move for Smith would hinge on the 30-year-old's fitness and wage demands after reportedly being told he can leave St James' Park.

Bates: 'First of all it depends on whether the manager (Simon Grayson) wants him or not, which is his decision and not mine.

'Alan Smith returning to Elland Road would be a very popular move, but we have to be careful because unfortunately over the last few seasons Alan's had a pretty poor injury record and one thing we can't afford to do is sign somebody who is not fit to play.

'The other thing of course is Alan Smith's wages. He's been at Manchester United and Newcastle, so his wages are probably in the stratosphere, well over the seven-figure region, so I suspect if he did join us he would have to knock a nought off it and probably half it, which may not suit him or his agent.

'But on the other hand nothing is certain and nothing is uncertain.'

In the interview with Yorkshire Radio, he added: 'I can confirm we're certainly continuing our quest for the right players and if he was fit of course Alan would be a great addition to the squad, but that would need further consideration and investigation by Simon.'

Smith scored on his debut for his hometown club aged 18 at Liverpool in 1998, but was sold for £7million to arch-rivals Manchester United in 2004 during Leeds' financial meltdown and suffered an horrific leg break at Anfield in 2006.

He moved on to Newcastle for £6million in 2007, but was restricted to only 14 appearances last season due to an ankle injury.

BURKE'S FIZZ

Chris Burke is itching to be part of a Blues 'revolution' bound for a return to the Barclays Premier League.

The Scotland international winger became Blues' first summer signing as the club start to put plans in place for a successful 2011/12 season in the npower Championship.

Following the disappointment of relegation from the top flight, Alex McLeish's side are determined to get over the blow as quickly as possible by securing immediate promotion.

The former Cardiff City star, who will officially arrive on a Bosman on July 1st having signed a pre-contract agreement, has already suffered a hat-trick of heartache by missing out on top flight promotion with the Bluebirds on three occasions.

And the 27-year-old isn't prepared to be a nearly man for a fourth time.

"Birmingham is a massive club," said the new-boy during an exclusive Blues TV interview.

"Obviously it was disappointing for them to drop down to the Championship but hopefully I can be part of the revolution of getting back up there.

"I had a great time at Cardiff, I cannot speak more highly of them but I felt as a player that I needed a fresh start and a new challenge.

"I had a great time at Cardiff but it was always disappointing at the end. It was a hard going. We missed out three times and were always ever so close but it just wasn't meant to be.

"Hopefully that won't be the case here at Birmingham. You can see from the players in the squad here that they are a very strong side and very capable of going straight back up."

Bryson Delighted To Join 'Ambitious Derby'
Posted on: Thu 09 Jun 2011

Craig Bryson says he opted to join Derby County from Kilmarnock because the Club's ambitions match his own.

The 24-year-old Scottish international midfielder has joined the Rams from the Scottish Premier League side on a three-year deal for an undisclosed fee.

The move completes some unfinished business for Bryson, who had had a trial with the Rams four years ago, but he wasn't taken on.

Since then he's made over 130 appearances for Kilmarnock, captained the SPL outfit and represented Scotland as a full international.

After finalising his move to the Championship, he says the ambition of the Club and Nigel Clough's determination to drive the Club forwards made his decision any easy one.

"I knew what a great Club Derby County was from the brief time I spent on trial here four years ago," said Bryson, speaking exclusively to dcfc.co.uk.

"It's got everything; great facilities, history and massive support.

"Even more important though is the ambition the Club has now, and that is the reason I've chosen to come here.

"I'm ambitious and I want to play at the highest level; everything I've heard and seen tells me this place is geared up for success.

"The Gaffer (Nigel Clough) made me feel wanted, but to be honest this wasn't a difficult decision to make; as soon as I knew Derby were interested I wanted to sign.

"There are some really good players here already and hopefully I can play my part in making us better and getting us towards the top end of the table."

Bryson is relishing the prospect of proving himself in the Championship next season.

He said: "I can't wait for the season to start to be honest; I'm excited to get out there and start playing.

"I know I'm going to need to be at my best week in week out to hold down a place in the team at a Club like this, but that's a personal challenge I'm looking forward to."
