Newcastle make late bid to sign versatile Birmingham defender

Sky Sports sources understand that Newcastle have made a late bid for Birmingham's Liam Ridgewell.

A host of top-flight clubs have been linked with the defender, who handed in a transfer request on Tuesday in a bid to force a move away from the Blues.
QPR were reportedly considering a late bid for the 27-year-old, while Swansea are believed to have had a loan request for Ridgewell rejected earlier this week.

But Newcastle have emerged as a late suitor for the player, who would provide versatility to the Magpies' backline given he can play in central defence as well as left-back.

Birmingham were reluctant to part with Ridgewell, turning down his transfer request earlier in the week.

Bolton have completed the signing of Liverpool's French striker David Ngog. There was talk of a £4m fee for the 22-year-old earlier today but I will firm that up for you when I can.

Update: Here’s some news on the fee that Blackburn will be paying for Scott Dann. Birmingham will receive an initial £6million, which could rise to £8m.

Rovers release Diouf

Sky Sports sources understand that unsettled forward El Hadji Diouf has been released by Blackburn.

The Senegal international has become increasingly unsettled over the past few months and was expected to leave the club over the summer.

The departure of Sam Allardyce from the Ewood Park hot-seat last season left Diouf frustrated, as he fell out of favour under new coach Steve Kean.

He was subsequently loaned out to Old Firm giants Rangers, and helped the Gers land the Scottish Premier League title during his time at Ibrox.

He was forced to return to Blackburn at the end of that spell, but delayed his return to pre-season training.

With his relationship with the club seemingly beyond repair, it was suggested that he would soon be on his way.

It is understood that Rovers have helped Diouf in his search for a new club by agreeing to terminate his contract.
